Founded in 1348, Charles University is Central Europe's oldest university and the Czech Republic's undisputed flagship — home to 51,000 students, five medical faculties, and a historic campus woven into the streets of Prague. For international students, it represents a rare combination: world-class medicine, law, and science at a fraction of the cost of Western Europe or North America.

Founded in 1348 by Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV, Charles University predates most European institutions. Its Karolinum building is one of the oldest intact university structures in the world — and a daily reminder of the institution's depth.
Five medical faculties — three in Prague, one in Pilsen, one in Hradec Králové — make Charles University one of Europe's largest training grounds for English-taught medicine. Graduates practice across the EU, UK, Middle East, and North America.
Charles University alumni include Gerty Cori (Nobel Prize, Physiology/Medicine, 1947) and Jaroslav Heyrovský (Nobel Prize, Chemistry, 1959) — both trained in a scientific tradition the university has maintained for nearly seven centuries.
Prague consistently ranks among Europe's most liveable cities — affordable, safe, and connected to Vienna, Berlin, and Budapest by rail. The cost of living is significantly lower than comparable Western European university cities.
Twenty percent of Charles University's 51,000 students are international, drawn from over 100 countries. The university holds membership in the Coimbra Group, the 4EU+ Alliance, and Europaeum — Europe's elite research university networks.
English-taught tuition begins at approximately €1,000/year for humanities and sciences, and approximately €16,000–18,000/year for medicine — a fraction of equivalent programmes in the UK, Ireland, or the US. Czech-taught programmes are entirely free.
Charles University is not a compromise destination — it is a deliberate choice. For students targeting medicine, law, or European humanities at the highest academic level, it combines ancient institutional prestige with remarkably accessible costs and a world-class European capital setting.
Overall acceptance rate across all faculties
Charles University Admissions Requirements —
Equivalent secondary school leaving certificate required
Strong academic record in relevant subjects for chosen faculty
IB Diploma: 34+ points competitive for most English-taught programmes
Some faculties require subject-specific excellence (mathematics for sciences, biology/chemistry for medicine)
Charles University evaluates the secondary school leaving certificate (or equivalent international qualification) against the requirements of the specific faculty. Academic performance in relevant subjects carries more weight than overall GPA alone.
IB Diploma: 34+ points typical for competitive English-taught programmes
A-Levels: BBB minimum for sciences/humanities; AAA for medicine
No SAT or ACT required — Charles University is test-blind
Entrance examinations are set and administered by individual faculties
Charles University does not use standardised tests like the SAT or ACT. Admission is based on your school-leaving qualification and, for many programmes (especially medicine), a faculty-administered entrance examination.
IELTS: minimum 6.5 overall for English-taught programmes
Native English speakers and students with prior English-medium education are typically exempt
English proficiency is verified for all students applying to English-taught programmes. Requirements are set at the faculty level but broadly follow B2 (CEFR) as the minimum threshold.

Charles University Application Components — Direct Faculty Application
Each of Charles University's 17 faculties manages its own admissions. Applications are submitted directly to the faculty's Admissions Office — there is no central application platform. Start at studycharles.cz to identify your faculty and programme.
An application fee (approximately $35 USD equivalent) is required to process each faculty application. Payment instructions are provided by the faculty after submission.
Your Matura, IB Diploma, A-Level results, or equivalent national qualification is the primary academic document. Certified translation into Czech or English is required. Original certificates must be submitted by the enrolment deadline.
Many faculties — including all five medical faculties — require a faculty-administered entrance examination. Medicine tests biology, chemistry, and physics. Exams may be held in Prague or, for some programmes, online.
For all English-taught programmes, proof of English at B2 level or above is required. Accepted tests: IELTS (6.5+), TOEFL iBT (85+), Duolingo (110+). Native speakers are generally exempt.
Some faculties — notably Humanities, Social Sciences, and Arts — request a motivation letter or academic writing sample. Requirements vary by programme; check each faculty's specific instructions carefully.
Certain programmes — primarily at doctoral level, and some English-taught Master's — require academic references or a research proposal. Undergraduate applications typically do not require recommendations.
Charles University operates through 17 independent faculties, each with its own application process and deadlines. Understanding that there is no central application system — and that each faculty must be approached individually — is the most important preparation step.
Most undergraduate programmes have no essay requirement
Unlike US universities, Charles University does not require a personal statement or essays for most undergraduate admissions. Admission is determined by academic qualifications and, where applicable, entrance examinations.
Motivation letters matter for humanities and social sciences
For programmes in the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Humanities, and Faculty of Social Sciences, a motivation letter may be required or strongly recommended. These should explain your academic interests and connection to the specific programme — not a general statement of ambition.
Be specific about your faculty and programme
Charles University values applicants who have clearly researched the specific faculty they are applying to. A motivation letter that references specific courses, research areas, or faculty members signals genuine interest and preparation.
Medicine applicants: prepare for the entrance examination, not an essay
For medical applicants, academic energy is best spent preparing for the biology, chemistry, and physics entrance examination — not essay writing. Charles University's medical faculties admit based on examination performance.
Charles University Application — Entrance Exams, Motivation Letters & Strategy
Faculty of Arts and Humanities may request: describe your academic background, your specific interest in the chosen programme, and how it connects to your future plans. Typically 1–2 pages.
Motivation Letter (Arts/Humanities/Social Sciences)
Biology, Chemistry, and Physics entrance examination — three components, maximum 100 points each, maximum 330 total. Passing score: 244. Additional oral interview: maximum 30 points.
SAT Math 690+ / ACT Math 30+ / IB Diploma 32+ / GCE A-Level (A in Mathematics) — any one of these qualifications satisfies the minimum quantitative threshold for BSc programmes at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics.
Mathematics & Physics BSc — Qualification Options
Spending time writing a personal statement when the faculty you are applying to does not require one — and not preparing adequately for the entrance examination that will actually determine your admission.

Application Strategy — What to Prioritise
What Charles University Admissions Look For
Charles University evaluates your school-leaving certificate in the context of your specific educational system. Strong grades in subjects relevant to your chosen faculty are the primary academic signal.
Faculty admissions review subject-level performance, not only overall averages. A medical applicant who excelled in biology, chemistry, and physics at the highest level signals genuine preparedness. This specificity matters more than a generalist strong record.
For competitive programmes — medicine most prominently — the entrance examination is the decisive factor. Applicants who score above the passing threshold and are competitive in the ranking are admitted. Preparation for the examination is the most direct path to admission.
Charles University's 17 faculties are each distinct academic communities. The admissions office — where motivation letters are requested — is looking for students who understand the specific programme and have academic reasons for choosing it, not students shopping for a European visa.
For English-taught programmes, verified language proficiency is a hard requirement. Meeting the minimum threshold is necessary but not sufficient for competitive programmes — strong written communication signals academic readiness beyond the score alone.
An application for medicine should show science preparation. An application for law or political science should show strong humanities preparation. An incoherent application — strong STEM preparation applying to a humanities programme with no explanation — raises questions that a motivation letter must address.
Charles University's decentralised admissions process means each faculty is looking for something different. The common thread: genuine academic preparation for the specific field you are entering, demonstrated through qualifications, examination performance, and — where requested — written evidence of intellectual motivation.
Annual tuition (English-taught programmes)
Charles University Costs & Financial Support
Cost figures are approximate annual estimates based on published university data and facts file. Tuition varies significantly by faculty and programme. Students should verify current fees with the specific faculty.
Charles University does not have a loan programme for international students. Financial support is primarily provided through merit-based tuition reductions and faculty scholarships, supplemented by Czech government and external scholarships for eligible students.
Charles University is one of the most affordable research universities in Europe for English-taught education. Tuition fees for most English-taught programmes are substantially lower than comparable UK, Irish, or US institutions, and Prague's cost of living is significantly below Western European capitals.

Medical Faculty Application Deadline (typical)
Latest Faculty Deadlines (some programmes)
Entrance Examinations Held (faculty-specific)
Earlier application gives more time to prepare for entrance examinations
Some faculties have rolling review — early submission is advantageous
Early submission allows time to correct document issues before deadlines
Medical programme places are limited — earlier applications can be advantageous for examination scheduling
Allows time to arrange housing and visa before autumn enrolment
Application Timeline — Faculty-by-Faculty
No standardised deadline — each of 17 faculties sets its own
No central application platform — must apply to each faculty separately
Missing a faculty deadline means waiting until the next academic year
Document translation and notarisation can take 4–8 weeks
Medical entrance exams require months of preparation — last-minute applications are very high risk
Charles University Application Rounds — Decentralised, Faculty-by-Faculty
Unlike US universities with EA/ED/RD rounds, Charles University operates with per-faculty deadlines. Most faculties accept applications from February to April; medical faculties typically close by 30 April for autumn admission. There is no competitive advantage to any specific round — only to submitting a complete application before the faculty deadline.
Begin your application process at least six months before your chosen faculty's deadline. For medicine, begin entrance examination preparation at least one full year in advance — the biology, chemistry, and physics examination is academically demanding and poorly attempted without structured preparation.
Written exam: Biology, Chemistry, Physics (100pts each) + oral interview (30pts)
In-person in Prague or Hradec Králové; some online options
Most non-medical programmes do not require an entrance examination; qualifications-based
Charles University Entrance Examinations — Format, Preparation & Strategy
This section tests university-level biology. Prepare cell biology, genetics, anatomy, physiology, ecology. IB HL Biology or A-Level Biology is necessary but not sufficient — go beyond the syllabus.
Medical Entrance: Biology Component (max 100 points)
Organic chemistry, biochemistry, and physical chemistry are heavily tested. IB HL Chemistry or A-Level Chemistry is the minimum preparation baseline.
Medical Entrance: Chemistry Component (max 100 points)
Mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, optics. Students without strong physics backgrounds consistently underperform here. Treat it as a third major subject, not an afterthought.
Medical Entrance: Physics Component (max 100 points)
An additional oral interview worth 30 points. Conducted in English for English-programme applicants. Tests scientific reasoning and motivation for medicine rather than factual recall.
Medical Entrance: Oral Interview (max 30 points)
Most humanities, social science, and science faculties admit based on qualifications alone. Verify your specific programme's requirements at studycharles.cz.
Non-Medical Programmes: Qualification-Based Admission
Charles University does not conduct university-wide admissions interviews in the US or UK sense. Most undergraduate admissions are decided by academic qualifications alone. For medical programmes, a formal written entrance examination — testing biology, chemistry, and physics — is the decisive admission step. Preparation for this examination, not interview coaching, is the strategic priority for medical applicants.

Our Charles University Admissions Track Record & Student Success Stories
I wanted to study medicine in Europe and couldn't afford UK fees. Tychr helped me understand that Charles University's medical entrance examination was the decisive factor — not essays. Six months of structured biology, chemistry, and physics preparation, and I scored 276 out of 330. I'm now in Year 3 of General Medicine in Prague.
Charles University — General Medicine (English)
Charles University wasn't on my radar until Tychr pointed out its Computer Science programme. No SAT required, a real IB-based admissions process, and Prague is one of the best cities in Europe to be a student. The Tychr team helped me with the motivation letter and I was accepted within three weeks of submitting my application.
I was applying to universities across Europe and needed guidance on the decentralised system at Charles. Tychr mapped out each faculty deadline and helped me structure my application for the Faculty of Social Sciences — the motivation letter they helped me develop was the first genuinely specific thing I had written about why I wanted to study in Prague.
Charles University — International Relations (MA)
Does Charles University require SAT or ACT scores?
No. Charles University is test-blind — SAT and ACT scores are not required and not considered. Admission is based on your secondary school leaving certificate (IB Diploma, A-Levels, national Matura, or equivalent) and, for medicine and some other programmes, a faculty-administered entrance examination.
Is medicine at Charles University in English?
Yes. All five of Charles University's medical faculties offer General Medicine in English. The 6-year programme leads to the MUDr (Doctor of General Medicine) degree, which is recognised across EU member states. English-taught medicine is the primary route for international students.
How competitive is Charles University medicine admission?
The English-taught medical programmes are significantly more competitive than Charles University's overall acceptance rate of 40% suggests. Admission is determined by a written entrance examination covering biology, chemistry, and physics (maximum 330 points; passing threshold approximately 244). Only students who score competitively in the ranking are admitted.
Can I study in English, or must I learn Czech?
Charles University offers more than 60 degree programmes taught entirely in English, predominantly at Bachelor's, Master's, and doctoral level. Czech-taught programmes are free of charge but require B2 Czech proficiency. For most international students, English-taught programmes are the practical route.
How do I apply to Charles University as an international student?
Applications are submitted directly to individual faculty Admissions Offices — Charles University has no central application system. Start at studycharles.cz to find your programme and faculty. Each faculty has its own form, deadline, and required documents. Deadlines typically range from February to July depending on the faculty.
Is financial aid available for international students?
Charles University's financial support for international students is limited compared to US universities. Some faculties offer merit-based tuition reductions for excellent academic performance after the first year. External scholarships through the Czech government and bilateral programmes exist for eligible nationalities. The primary financial advantage is tuition — English-taught fees are substantially lower than comparable UK or US programmes.
What is the cost of living in Prague for students?
Prague is one of the most affordable EU capitals for students. Annual living costs are approximately $10,500, including accommodation in university dormitories (typically shared rooms, lower cost than private housing), food, transport, and personal expenses. University dormitories are significantly cheaper than private apartments.
Are Charles University medical degrees recognised internationally?
MUDr graduates from Charles University's medical faculties are eligible to apply for medical licensing in EU member states under the EU's mutual recognition of professional qualifications directive. Graduates seeking to practice in the UK, US, Canada, or Australia must pass relevant national licensing examinations (GMC PLAB, USMLE, etc.), as is standard for any European medical graduate.
Studying medicine in Prague is not a compromise — it is a strategic decision that puts you in one of Europe's great universities at a fraction of the cost.

Charles University Academic Requirements — The Honest Breakdown for International Students
What academic qualifications, entrance examination scores, and preparation do Charles University's admitted students actually need? A faculty-by-faculty guide for IB, A-Level, and international curriculum students.
Charles University does not publish a universal minimum GPA. What it evaluates is the secondary school leaving certificate — your IB Diploma, A-Level results, national Matura, or equivalent — and how that record demonstrates preparation for the specific faculty you are entering.
Minimum GPA equivalent for competitive English-taught programmes
IB Diploma competitive range for most English-taught programmes
Charles University and Academic Qualifications — What the Data Shows
A strong academic record in relevant subjects is a baseline expectation, not a distinguishing feature. For competitive programmes — particularly medicine — strong qualifications are necessary but not sufficient. The entrance examination is the decisive step.
Charles University evaluates international qualifications in the context of the student's educational system. IB, A-Level, American AP, Indian CBSE, and national European Matura certificates are all accepted. The key question is: does this student demonstrate strong preparation in subjects relevant to their chosen faculty?
What this means for international students
For non-examination programmes, an upward academic trajectory — improving performance in the final two years of secondary school — is viewed positively. For medical applicants, the entrance examination provides a standardised baseline that supplements or supersedes the secondary school record in the admission decision.
Grade trajectory and the entrance examination
Charles University operates without a central admissions office. Each of its 17 faculties independently evaluates academic qualifications. The result: what counts as a strong application varies by faculty, by programme, and sometimes by language of instruction.
A student with an IB Diploma applying for computer science will be evaluated differently from one with CBSE results applying for medicine, or a student with A-Levels applying for humanities. Each faculty's admissions criteria reflect the academic demands of the specific programme, and staff in each faculty office are experienced at evaluating international qualifications from their typical applicant pool.
How Charles University contextualises your academic record
Taking the most rigorous version of your curriculum available — and demonstrating strong performance in subjects directly relevant to your target faculty — is more important than a generalist high average. A medical applicant with outstanding biology and chemistry but weaker humanities grades is better positioned than one with a uniform average across all subjects.
Faculty-Level Evaluation — How Charles University Reads International Qualifications
For students at schools less familiar to European admissions offices, supplementary evidence — course descriptions, syllabi, or a brief note from the school counsellor — can help the faculty office contextualise the qualification. Tychr coaches applicants on what supporting materials to include.
For students at less well-known international schools
Charles University does not require or accept SAT scores as part of its admissions process. It is fully test-blind with respect to standardised US tests. This section explains what replaces standardised testing in the Charles University evaluation.
Exception: Faculty of Mathematics & Physics BSc asks for SAT Math 690+ as one option
SAT at Charles University — Not Required; What Matters Instead
The one exception is the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, which lists SAT Math 690+ as one qualifying option for international applicants to its Bachelor's programmes. This is not a requirement — applicants may instead present IB Diploma 32+, ACT Math 30+, or GCE A-Level with A in Mathematics as alternatives.
Energy that US applicants might direct toward SAT preparation is better directed at the Charles University entrance examination (for medicine) or ensuring subject-specific IB/A-Level performance is as strong as possible (for all other faculties).
Students with strong SAT scores applying to Charles University's Faculty of Mathematics and Physics may use the score as a qualifying document, but it is not weighted in the admission decision beyond establishing minimum eligibility. Do not submit SAT scores to other faculties — they are not part of the evaluation.
Charles University does not require ACT scores. The ACT is not part of the standard admissions process for any Charles University faculty, with the limited exception noted below.
Faculty of Maths & Physics: ACT Math 30+ is one qualifying option among alternatives
ACT at Charles University — Not Used; How to Demonstrate Equivalent Ability
Charles University does not use or superscore the ACT. The test is irrelevant to admissions at all faculties except as one of several optional qualifying options at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics.
IB Diploma is the primary international qualification evaluated. A score of 34+ is competitive for most English-taught programmes.
A-Levels are well understood and broadly accepted. Subject selection relevant to the target faculty matters more than overall grades.
For medicine: the Biology, Chemistry, Physics entrance examination is the decisive step, regardless of which secondary qualification is held.
What Replaces Standardised Testing at Charles University
Do not factor ACT score into a Charles University application strategy unless you are specifically applying to Faculty of Mathematics and Physics BSc programmes and your score is at or above 30 on the Math section. In all other cases, focus on IB/A-Level performance and entrance examination preparation.
Charles University is not test-optional — it is test-blind. The distinction is important: test-optional universities still consider strong scores voluntarily submitted; test-blind universities do not consider scores at all. Charles University does not use SAT or ACT scores in any admission decision.
Charles University Test Policy — Fully Test-Blind
Charles University evaluates international applicants based on their secondary school leaving certificate, faculty entrance examination results (where applicable), and English language proficiency tests. Standardised US tests play no role in admission.
Never — unless applying to the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics BSc programme where SAT Math / ACT Math is listed as one optional qualifying evidence among several.
When applying to medicine, law, arts, humanities, social sciences, or science faculties — SAT/ACT scores are not part of the application and submitting them adds no value.
When your SAT/ACT is strong — it still does not help your application at Charles University outside the Faculty of Mathematics exception.
When NOT to include standardised test scores
Students with strong SAT scores sometimes assume this will help their Charles University application. It will not — except in the specific Faculty of Mathematics and Physics case. Academic energy is far better invested in entrance examination preparation (for medicine) or subject-specific IB/A-Level performance (for all other faculties).
Charles University values the IB Diploma's breadth and subject-level depth. For medical applicants, HL Biology and HL Chemistry are expected foundations — they align directly with the entrance examination content. The Extended Essay is not formally evaluated but a research-oriented EE in a science subject can contextualise an application positively in a motivation letter.
Competitive range (most English-taught programmes)
HL Biology and HL Chemistry expected; HL Physics advantageous
Computer Science (Maths & Physics faculty)
IB Diploma 32+ overall; strong mathematics component
A-Levels are well understood by Charles University admissions staff and broadly accepted across faculties. The subject combination should align directly with the target faculty's academic content. Medical applicants should have Biology and Chemistry; Computer Science applicants should have Mathematics.
AAA in Biology, Chemistry, and one additional science or Mathematics
A in Mathematics required; ABB overall minimum
BBB minimum; relevant humanities subjects
Subject selection matters more than overall grade profile
A-Levels and IB Diploma at Charles University — Programme-by-Programme Benchmarks
Advanced Placement (AP) courses and examinations are not part of the standard evaluation at Charles University. However, AP performance can serve as supplementary evidence of academic preparation in specific subjects, particularly for applicants whose primary qualification is less familiar to the faculty admissions office.
AP Biology (5), AP Chemistry (5), and AP Physics (5) directly map to the content of Charles University's medical entrance examination. Strong AP performance in these subjects can be noted in a motivation letter as evidence of content preparation, though it is not a formal admission factor.
AP as supplementary evidence for medical applicants
For computer science applicants to the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, AP Computer Science A or AP Calculus BC (5) can indicate subject-level preparation but does not substitute for the qualifying criteria the faculty lists.
AP is more relevant as preparation for the content of entrance examinations than as a formal admissions signal. Students who have completed AP Biology and AP Chemistry have effectively covered much of the entrance examination syllabus.
The honest use of AP at Charles University
AP Courses & International Qualifications
AP Courses at Charles University — How They Are Treated
Charles University does not offer course credit for AP examination scores, unlike many US universities. Credit transfer policies for incoming international students are handled individually by faculty departments.
International students whose curriculum does not include AP courses are not disadvantaged. The IB Diploma and A-Levels are the primary international qualifications evaluated. AP is relevant only where it has been completed and can serve as supplementary evidence.
Charles University evaluates the rigor of the secondary school record through the lens of subject relevance — whether the courses taken prepare the student for the academic content of the chosen faculty.
Rigour of Secondary School Record — What Charles University Evaluates
Strong performance in the subjects most relevant to your target faculty, at the highest level your curriculum offers.
Rigour at Charles University is faculty-specific. A medical faculty assesses whether the applicant has genuinely studied biology and chemistry at a high level. A computer science faculty assesses mathematical preparation. The same transcript that signals excellent preparation for one faculty might reveal gaps for another.
This means choosing your secondary school subjects strategically — not for overall average maximisation, but for alignment with your target faculty. A student who takes HL Biology, HL Chemistry, and HL Physics in the IB is not just earning points; they are building the content knowledge the medical entrance examination will test.
Charles University admissions staff are looking for students whose subject choices make sense for the programme they are applying to. A convincing application for medicine from a student with only humanities subjects raises immediate questions. Coherence between subject selection and faculty choice is a basic signal of genuine intent.
For medicine — Charles University's most internationally sought programme — the academic expectations are clear and measurable: the faculty entrance examination requires genuine mastery of biology, chemistry, and physics at post-secondary level. For other faculties, subject-level strength in the relevant discipline is the expectation.
Subject-Level Preparation — What Charles University Expects by Programme
The medical entrance examination covers university-level biology: cell biology, genetics, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and ecology. IB HL Biology or A-Level Biology provides the foundation, but the examination goes beyond typical school syllabus content — targeted preparation beyond the school curriculum is essential.
Organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and biochemistry are all tested. A-Level Chemistry or IB HL Chemistry is necessary preparation; students should supplement with additional biochemistry and organic chemistry content specifically for the entrance examination.
Mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, and optics. Many medical applicants underestimate physics preparation. Students without strong physics backgrounds consistently perform below the admission threshold — this must be treated as a third major examination subject.
For the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics: HL Mathematics AA (IB) or A-Level Mathematics (A grade) is the baseline. University-level calculus and linear algebra content appears in entrance examinations for mathematics programmes.
All English-taught programmes at Charles University require verified English proficiency at B2 level (CEFR) or above. Unlike some UK or US universities where the application process itself demonstrates language ability, Charles University requires a formal test certificate.
English Language Requirements for Charles University International Applicants
The minimum thresholds listed are genuine minimums — meeting them secures entry to English-taught programmes, but strong English proficiency is increasingly important for succeeding in demanding academic environments. Medical education in English requires scientific vocabulary, fast comprehension, and precise written communication.
Native English speakers and students who have completed their most recent 2+ years of secondary education in an English-medium school are typically exempt from the language test requirement. Students should confirm exemption eligibility with their target faculty's admissions office before excluding this document from their application.
Charles University admits students to specific faculties and programmes — unlike US liberal arts colleges, students apply to a defined field of study. Academic requirements therefore vary substantially by faculty. The table below reflects competitive standards for the most commonly sought English-taught programmes.
Strong bio/chem/physics; entrance exam preparation
IB 34+; HL Biology + Chemistry; or A-Levels AAA in sciences
Strong mathematics; IB AA or A-Level Maths
Academic writing; history/social science background
IB 34+; strong humanities; motivation letter
Strong overall record; humanities emphasis
Academic Requirements by Programme — What Different Paths Expect
IB is well understood across Charles University's faculties and is among the most commonly presented international qualifications. The diploma's subject structure maps clearly to Charles University's faculty-specific requirements — HL subject choices and points are both evaluated. The Extended Essay is noted but not a formal admissions criterion.
A-Levels are fully accepted. Faculty admissions offices are experienced with Cambridge and Edexcel qualifications. The combination of subjects is evaluated for relevance to the target faculty as much as for the grades achieved.
The European Matura (and equivalent national school-leaving examinations from EU and EEA countries) are the most commonly presented qualifications by EU applicants. Charles University is directly familiar with Czech, Slovak, German, Polish, Hungarian, and other European leaving certificates.
Indian boards (CBSE, ISC) are accepted at most faculties. Science stream students applying to medicine should ensure their biology, chemistry, and physics marks are strong. Supplementary evidence — test scores, entrance examination preparation — can strengthen applications from schools less familiar to Charles University admissions staff.
Students from non-European secondary systems applying with SAT scores, US transcripts, or other qualifications are evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the target faculty. Including a brief note from the school and a course description document helps contextualise the qualification.

Identify faculty-specific application deadlines — most fall between February and April of application year.
Begin active entrance examination preparation (medicine)
Start structured entrance examination preparation for medical applicants — at least 12 months before the examination date.
Work through examination-specific biology and chemistry content beyond school syllabus.
Strengthen physics preparation — this is the most common point of weakness for medical entrance candidates.
Begin drafting the motivation letter if applying to faculties that require it.
Submit faculty application(s) well before the deadline — most medical faculty deadlines are April 30.
Obtain certified translations of secondary school documents where required.
Complete English proficiency examination and obtain official score report.
If required, sit the entrance examination in Prague or online — this is typically held in May to July.
Building an Academic Profile for Charles University — What to Do at Each Stage
Academic Mistakes That Hurt Charles University Applications — And How to Avoid Them
The medical entrance examination at Charles University tests university-level content in three sciences simultaneously. Students who rely solely on their IB or A-Level preparation — without specifically preparing for the examination format and content range — consistently underperform relative to their academic record.
Underestimating the medical entrance examination
Charles University has 17 independent faculties, each with its own deadline, form, and requirements. Missing a faculty deadline means waiting until the next academic year — there is no extension. Applications that arrive after the closing date are not considered.
For medicine in particular, the most common mistake is weak physics preparation. Applicants who have strong biology and chemistry but have not studied physics rigorously — or not at all — frequently score below the passing threshold on that component alone.
Weak physics preparation for medical applicants
Faculties requiring a motivation letter — Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences — read carefully for genuine, faculty-specific reasoning. A generic letter stating general academic ambition, without specific reference to the programme, research interests, or academic context, reads as low engagement.
Some students apply to Charles University's English-taught programmes while planning to transfer to Czech-language programmes later without the requisite Czech proficiency. Czech-taught programmes are free but require genuine B2 Czech — they are not a subsequent cheaper route for students admitted under English-taught terms.
Assuming Czech programmes are freely accessible without language preparation
The following profiles represent the academic backgrounds of students Tychr has helped gain Charles University admission. They reflect the range of qualifications that work — and what made each application successful.
What Academic Profiles Tychr's Charles University-Admitted Students Had
HL Biology (7), HL Chemistry (7), HL Physics (6). Entrance examination score: 281/330. Passed the oral interview component. One year of structured Tychr entrance examination preparation.
IB 38 · IELTS 7.0 · Entrance Exam 281/330
The IB Diploma provided a strong content foundation. The differentiating factor was twelve months of structured entrance examination preparation that went significantly beyond the IB syllabus in biochemistry and mechanics.
A-Level Mathematics (A*), A-Level Computer Science (A), A-Level Physics (A). Applied to Faculty of Mathematics and Physics Computer Science (BSc). Admitted on qualifications alone — no entrance examination required for this programme.
Profile 2 — Computer Science (BSc, English)
A-Levels A*AA · TOEFL 102 · Admitted on qualifications
Strong A-Level profile in directly relevant subjects made this a straightforward qualifications-based admission. No entrance examination required — subject alignment with the programme was the deciding factor.
IB Diploma 36. Applied to Faculty of Social Sciences, International Relations (English MA). Motivation letter describing research background in Central European politics and specific interest in the faculty's research focus areas.
Profile 3 — Social Sciences (MA, English)
The motivation letter was the decisive written element. A faculty-specific letter referencing the department's research agenda and explaining why Prague's geopolitical position made Charles University the right context for the applicant's research interests — not a generic ambition statement.
What IB score do I need for Charles University medicine?
An IB score of 34 or above is competitive for most English-taught programmes, but for medicine, the entrance examination score — not the IB Diploma total — is the decisive admission factor. Strong HL Biology and HL Chemistry performance is essential preparation for the examination content, but applicants with 38+ IB scores still fail the entrance examination without specific preparation.
Is the medical entrance examination difficult?
It is academically demanding. The examination tests biology, chemistry, and physics at a level that goes beyond most secondary school curricula, including IB HL. The passing threshold is 244 out of 330 points. Without dedicated preparation specifically for the examination format and content, many otherwise well-qualified candidates fall short.
Can I apply to multiple faculties simultaneously?
Yes. You can apply to multiple faculties at Charles University simultaneously — and there is no penalty for doing so. Each application is submitted and processed independently by the relevant faculty. If you are applying to more than one medical faculty, note that each has its own entrance examination and deadline.
Does Charles University require a personal statement?
Not for most undergraduate programmes. Medicine does not require a personal statement — admission is determined by qualifications and the entrance examination. Some humanities and social sciences faculties request a motivation letter. Check your specific programme's requirements in the studycharles.cz catalogue.
Are Charles University medical degrees valid in the UK?
Charles University MUDr graduates wishing to practice in the UK must pass the GMC's Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) examination — the same route required of all non-UK medical graduates. EU recognition of the degree is automatic under the EU Professional Qualifications Directive; UK recognition requires PLAB completion.

Charles University Costs — One of Europe's Best-Value Research Universities
Charles University offers world-class medicine, law, and science at tuition fees that are a fraction of comparable UK, Irish, or North American institutions. Here is the complete and honest picture of what studying in Prague actually costs.
What Charles University Actually Costs — The Full Annual Figure
Charles University Estimated Annual Cost of Attendance (English-Taught Programmes)
Local transport (Prague public transport)
Medicine (English) tuition is higher — approximately €16,000–18,000 per year — bringing total annual costs for medical students closer to $28,000–30,000. This remains substantially below equivalent medicine programmes in the UK (€35,000+/year) or Ireland (€60,000+/year for non-EU students).
Medicine tuition is higher — but still exceptional value
Students with Czech language proficiency at B2 level can study entirely tuition-free.
Average English-taught programme tuition. Medicine is approximately €16,000–18,000/year.
Financial Aid at Charles University — What Exists and What to Realistically Expect
Charles University's financial support for international students is limited compared to US universities. The primary financial advantage is the tuition structure itself — English-taught fees are substantially below Western European equivalents. Most institutional financial support takes the form of merit-based tuition reductions after the first year of study.
Unlike need-blind, full-need US universities such as Harvard or Princeton, Charles University does not operate a comprehensive financial aid programme for international students. Financial planning should begin with the assumption that the full listed tuition will be payable, with scholarship opportunities treated as supplementary rather than primary funding.
Charles University's institutional financial support for international students is primarily merit-based — awarded for academic excellence demonstrated during the course of study, not before admission. The most common form is a tuition fee reduction offered to high-performing students after their first year.
Honest Comparison: Charles University vs. US Need-Based Systems
Once enrolled and performing well, students may become eligible for faculty-level scholarships or tuition reductions. These are awarded by individual faculties based on academic performance in the first year and are not guaranteed. Students should not factor assumed scholarships into their financial planning before admission.
Why Charles University is Genuinely Affordable
Czech public universities, including Charles University, are funded primarily by the Czech state. Czech-taught programmes carry no tuition for any student — domestic or international. English-taught fees exist because the state does not subsidise foreign-language instruction at the same rate, but the overall fee structure remains significantly below Western European equivalents due to the Czech public funding model.
Prague's cost of living is approximately 40–50% lower than London, Paris, or Amsterdam — the equivalent Western European student capitals. Housing, food, transport, and entertainment costs are all significantly lower, meaning the total cost of attending Charles University is substantially reduced even when tuition is comparable to some European peers.
~40–50% lower than Western European capitals
Why Charles University Represents Genuine Value for International Students
Compared to equivalent UK medical programmes
"Charles University offers the academic rigour and European recognition of institutions twice its cost — that is not a coincidence, it is the consequence of seven centuries of public investment in knowledge."
English-taught medicine at Charles University costs approximately €16,000–18,000/year. The same qualification at a UK medical school costs non-EU students £38,000–60,000/year. Over a 6-year programme, this difference is measured in hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Confirm faculty-level merit aid eligibility after Year 1
Many faculties offer tuition reductions for students who achieve outstanding academic results in their first year
Apply through the faculty's student administration office once first-year results are confirmed
Post-admission merit support is more accessible than pre-admission scholarships at Charles University. Performing well in Year 1 opens the most reliable pathway to reduced costs in subsequent years.
Applying for Financial Support at Charles University — The Complete Process
Financial aid at Charles University is not a centralised process — it is a patchwork of faculty scholarships, government programmes, and external funding. Here is the complete map.
International students at Charles University face a fundamentally different financial aid landscape from US university applicants. There is no need-blind admissions policy, no CSS Profile, and no comprehensive need-based grant system. The honest picture: financial support exists, but it is limited, competitive, and rarely covers the majority of tuition costs.
Individual faculties may offer tuition reductions or one-time scholarship awards for academic excellence — typically after performance in the first year is demonstrated. These are merit-based, not need-based, and are awarded through each faculty's administration independently.
The Czech Ministry of Education funds scholarship programmes for students from certain countries — particularly bilateral partner countries. Eligibility, amounts, and application processes vary. Information is available through the Development and Cooperation Section of the Ministry of Education (DZS).
4EU+ Alliance and Erasmus+ for EU/EEA students
EU and EEA students may access Erasmus+ mobility funding for exchange periods within the 4EU+ Alliance partner universities (Sorbonne, Heidelberg, Warsaw, Copenhagen, Milan, Geneva). This is primarily relevant for mobility grants, not tuition support.
Students from specific countries, fields, or backgrounds may be eligible for private foundation scholarships applicable to Charles University study. Tychr maintains country-specific scholarship guidance for students attending European institutions.

What Financial Support Looks Like at Charles University
Charles University — Financial Support Options by Category
For most international students, financial planning at Charles University should start from the assumption of paying full listed tuition. The primary financial advantage is the tuition level itself — not institutional aid. Scholarships exist but are supplementary, not foundational.
Aid information is approximate and subject to change. Students should verify current scholarship availability directly with their target faculty and through the Czech Ministry of Education's scholarship portal.
The most reliable path to reduced costs at Charles University is strong first-year academic performance, which unlocks faculty merit reductions. Plan to pay full tuition in Year 1 and treat subsequent reductions as a positive but uncertain outcome.
Charles University does not operate a universal need-based financial aid programme for international students. What does exist is a merit-based system — primarily structured as tuition reductions for academic excellence — administered by individual faculties.
Faculty scholarship and tuition reduction programmes at Charles University are awarded based on academic performance. Financial need is not a primary criterion. A student who performs exceptionally in Year 1 may receive a reduced tuition offer for Year 2 and beyond — the financial circumstance of the family does not determine eligibility.
Some Czech government bilateral scholarship programmes consider both merit and, in some cases, economic development criteria for the student's country of origin. These are country-specific and must be researched individually. They are not structured financial aid from the university itself.
The most honest scholarship at Charles University is the tuition itself. English-taught tuition at approximately $7,600/year for most programmes — and approximately €16,000–18,000/year for medicine — represents genuine value relative to comparable European and Anglophone programmes. The tuition advantage is the primary financial benefit for most international students.
The real 'scholarship' at Charles University
Faculty of Medicine first-year excellence awards, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics Dean's scholarships, and similar faculty-specific awards are the most common institutional scholarship forms. Details are published by each faculty and are updated annually.
Charles University Scholarships — What Exists and Who Qualifies
For most international students at Charles University, external scholarships — from home governments, private foundations, and international organisations — are more significant funding sources than university-provided aid. Identifying and applying for these should be a priority alongside the university application.
External Scholarships for Charles University Students — Where to Look
Tychr's scholarship database: As part of every full admissions programme, Tychr identifies external scholarship opportunities relevant to the student's country of origin, intended field, and academic profile. Country-specific scholarship guidance for European university study is provided alongside the admissions process.
External scholarships and Charles University faculty support may in some cases be stackable. Students awarded external scholarships should notify the relevant faculty administration — the interaction between external funding and any Charles University merit support should be confirmed with the faculty financial administration.
Czech Ministry of Education (DZS) Scholarships
Government-funded scholarships for students from select partner countries. Application through the DZS portal. Covers some or all tuition costs for eligible students.
Open Society Foundations / CEU Scholarships
Central European University and Open Society-affiliated scholarships support students studying in Central Europe; some are applicable to Charles University study
Many countries fund citizens studying at European universities — India (ICCR), Gulf states, Nigeria (various), Indonesia (LPDP). Research the scholarship landscape of your home country specifically.
Charles University's Coimbra Group membership enables access to some group-level scholarship and exchange programmes. Eligibility is primarily for students at other Coimbra Group institutions.
Bilateral government scholarships are the most impactful external funding source for many Charles University applicants. These vary enormously by country — some offer full coverage, others partial support. Tychr maintains current knowledge of major bilateral programmes for its student cohort.
Charles University does not operate a student loan programme for international students. There is no institutional loan system equivalent to US federal loans or UK student loans. International students are expected to fund their studies through personal or family resources, external scholarships, and — where applicable — private bank loans in their home country.
The absence of an institutional loan programme means that planning carefully for the full cost before admission is essential. Unlike US universities where significant debt is an accepted and structured part of the financing model, Charles University study requires students to have funding arranged in advance.
EU and EEA students may have access to student loan systems in their home countries that are applicable to study abroad at Charles University. Non-EU students should investigate whether their home country's student loan systems permit international study financing.
Some students supplement family funding with private bank loans — either in Czechia or their home country. Interest rates and eligibility criteria vary significantly. This is not a Charles University-administered programme; students arrange private financing independently.
For many students, the cost comparison with UK or US alternatives makes Charles University self-financing more achievable. A family that cannot afford £50,000/year for UK medicine may be able to plan for €18,000/year at Charles University — a substantially different financial calculation.
Charles University Loan Policy — No Institutional Loans; What This Means
Charles University does not have a formal work-study programme equivalent to US federal work-study. However, student employment in Prague is common and practical — the Czech economy and Prague's growing international business environment offer numerous part-time opportunities for students.
Working While Studying in Prague — Practical Guidance for International Students
Research assistant positions in university laboratories and departments (competitive; available from Year 2 onwards for strong students)
English-language tutoring — strong demand in Prague for native or fluent English speakers
International company internships — Prague hosts European offices of Deloitte, EY, Accenture, and dozens of tech firms
Hospitality and tourism — significant English-language employment in Prague's tourism sector
Online freelancing and remote work — compatible with the academic schedule for many students
Faculty administrative and student support roles
Non-EU students should verify their visa terms regarding employment — student visa conditions vary by nationality. EU students are generally permitted to work without additional work authorisation in Czechia. Most students who work do so informally within the visa terms, and Czech labour law requires written employment contracts.
Part-time employment of 10–15 hours per week can supplement living costs meaningfully in Prague — the relatively low cost of living means that even modest earnings contribute significantly to financial sustainability. This is particularly relevant for covering the approximate $10,500 annual living costs.
Student employment in Prague is entirely voluntary and is not part of any university aid package. Students who choose to work should ensure their academic schedule and visa status permit it, and should prioritise entrance examination preparation or course performance above income generation in the early years of study.
Public university; English-taught fees from ~$7,600/yr
Public university; international fees £38,000–60,000/yr for medicine
UK Student Loans (for home students only)
Public EU university; low or no tuition for EU students
Netherlands / Germany public universities
€2,000–12,000/yr for non-EU international
Charles University vs. Comparable Institutions — Financial Aid and Cost Comparison
Charles University has no binding early-decision system. Students can compare all offers before committing and do not risk being locked into a single offer without the ability to evaluate alternatives.
For students whose primary objective is English-taught medicine, Charles University represents by far the most cost-efficient route to a European-recognised medical degree. The comparison with UK medical schools — where non-EU international fees are typically 3–5 times higher — is the most practically relevant benchmark.
English-taught; ~$7,600/yr tuition; affordable city
English-taught medicine; €16,000–18,000/yr tuition
International non-EU fees; London living costs
International fees; Amsterdam/Leiden costs
Charles University vs. Comparable Destinations — What You Actually Pay
Six-Year Medical Programme Total Cost Comparison (Approximate)
Over a 6-year medicine programme, Charles University costs approximately $100,000–170,000 total — compared to $360,000–480,000 at UK or Irish medical schools for non-EU students. This is not a marginal difference — it is a life-defining financial decision.
Charles University does not have a formal financial aid appeal process equivalent to US universities. However, where financial circumstances change significantly after admission — or where a scholarship or tuition reduction award is believed to be incorrect — there are pathways to raise concerns.
Addressing Financial Concerns at Charles University — What to Do
The honest note: Charles University's tuition and funding decisions are not primarily driven by the kind of need-based assessment that makes US financial aid appeals meaningful. The most productive approach is to ensure your scholarship applications are complete, accurate, and submitted on time — not to expect significant post-decision adjustments.
Contact the relevant faculty's Student Affairs / Financial Administration office directly
Document any significant change in financial circumstances with formal evidence
For scholarship queries, contact the office that administered the specific scholarship programme
For Czech government scholarship queries, contact DZS (the Czech National Agency for International Education and Research)
A Czech government or bilateral scholarship award appears incorrect or incomplete
A faculty merit scholarship has been applied incorrectly to your tuition account
Financial circumstances have changed significantly since enrolment (family crisis, loss of income)
An administrative error in the tuition calculation has been identified
Faculty financial administration offices typically respond to written queries within 2–4 weeks. The most productive appeals are those based on clear factual errors or documented changes in circumstances — not general requests for increased funding.
Establish full cost of attendance before applying
Use Charles University's published fee schedules and Prague cost-of-living estimates to calculate the full annual and programme-length cost for your specific target programme. Medicine (6 years) and non-medicine (3–4 years) have significantly different total cost profiles.
Research and apply for external scholarships
Grade 11–12, simultaneously with application
Identify Czech government bilateral scholarships, home government scholarships, and private foundation awards applicable to Charles University study. Many have deadlines that precede or coincide with university application deadlines. Do not leave scholarship research until after admission.
Submit faculty application(s) and pay application fee
Grade 12, February–April (most faculty deadlines)
Submit applications to target faculties well before the deadline. Pay the approximately $35 application fee per faculty. Ensure all supporting documents — translated certificates, English proficiency scores — are ready before the deadline, not after.
Receive admission decision and plan enrolment
Admission decisions for most faculties are issued in the summer semester following application. Medical entrance examination results are typically released in June–July. Upon admission, begin visa and accommodation arrangements promptly.
Perform strongly in Year 1 to access merit support
The most reliable path to reduced tuition in subsequent years is academic excellence in Year 1. Faculty merit scholarships and tuition reductions are typically assessed after the first year of study results. Treat Year 1 academic performance as a financial as well as academic investment.
Planning for Charles University Costs — What to Do and When
Charles University Application Guide — Entrance Exams, Motivation Letters & What Actually Matters
Charles University does not require essays in the US sense. Admission is determined by academic qualifications and, for medicine and some programmes, a faculty entrance examination. This guide covers what the application actually involves — and what to prepare instead of a personal statement.
Charles University Application Requirements — The Full Picture
Charles University operates a decentralised application system: 17 independent faculties, each with its own process. Most undergraduate programmes do not require essays or personal statements. Medicine is the highest-volume English-taught programme and is entirely examination-based. The rare exception — motivation letters — is required by some humanities and social science faculties.
For the majority of Charles University English-taught programmes — including medicine, computer science, and natural sciences — admission is based entirely on academic qualifications and, where applicable, entrance examination performance. No essay or personal statement is required.
All five medical faculties require a written entrance examination covering biology, chemistry, and physics (100 points each, max 330 total) and an oral interview component (30 points). This examination — not essays — is the decisive step in medical admissions.
Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Humanities, and Faculty of Social Sciences may require or recommend a motivation letter — typically 1–2 pages explaining academic interests and programme-specific motivation. Check each programme's requirements carefully in the studycharles.cz catalogue.
Doctoral programme applications typically require a research proposal and academic references. This is distinct from undergraduate applications and represents a different, research-specific document.
Entrance Examination & Application Documents
Charles University Application Documents — What Each Programme Requires
Medical Faculty Entrance Examination — Biology
The biology component tests cell biology, genetics, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, ecology, and evolution at university-level content. The examination is multiple-choice and short-answer format. Passing threshold contributes to the combined score of 244/330 required for admission.
Treat this as a university-level biology examination, not a school examination. IB HL Biology covers approximately 70–75% of the content; targeted preparation with a medical entrance examination preparation guide for Czech/Slovak universities covers the remaining scope. Biochemistry is frequently underweighted by IB-trained students.
Medical Faculty Entrance Examination — Chemistry
The chemistry component covers inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry (including reaction mechanisms and functional groups), physical chemistry (thermodynamics, kinetics), and biochemistry. A-Level or IB HL Chemistry is the baseline preparation level.
Organic chemistry depth is frequently the gap for IB-trained applicants — the examination goes significantly further than the IB HL organic chemistry syllabus. Biochemistry (enzyme kinetics, metabolic pathways) should be specifically targeted in preparation.
https://becomeadoctor.eu/czech-republic/charles-university-prague/charles-university-medicine-admission/
Medical Faculty Entrance Examination — Physics
The physics component covers classical mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, optics, and modern physics. Many applicants without formal physics study at IB HL or A-Level struggle significantly with this component.
Physics is the highest-risk component for students whose preparation focused on biology and chemistry. Students without A-Level or IB HL Physics should begin physics preparation at least 8 months before the examination. A weak physics score frequently puts the combined total below the 244/330 passing threshold.
https://becomeadoctor.eu/czech-republic/charles-university-prague/charles-university-medicine-admission/
Motivation Letter — Faculty of Arts / Humanities / Social Sciences
Where required, the motivation letter should explain: (1) your academic background relevant to the programme; (2) your specific interest in this programme at Charles University; (3) your academic or professional goals. Length is typically 1–2 pages. Confirm the exact requirement with your target faculty's admissions office.
Faculty-specific motivation letters should reference actual courses, research areas, or faculty members relevant to the programme — not generic statements of academic ambition. Reviewers read hundreds of letters; specificity to the programme and institution is the primary differentiating factor.
Each faculty has its own application form, submitted through the faculty's own system (not a central Charles University platform). The form collects personal details, secondary school information, qualification details, English proficiency certification, and programme selection. Visit studycharles.cz to access the correct faculty form.
Begin the application form process earlier than the deadline — document translation, notarisation, and English proficiency test certification can each take 4–8 weeks to arrange. Incomplete applications at the deadline cannot be extended.
The Medical Entrance Examination vs. The Motivation Letter — Two Different Challenges
The most important distinction in Charles University applications: medical admissions are examination-based, not essay-based. The entrance examination is an objective, scored assessment of science knowledge. The motivation letter, where required, is a qualitative evaluation of academic fit. These are fundamentally different preparation challenges.
Medical faculties: objective demonstration of biology, chemistry, and physics mastery at university entrance level
Humanities/social sciences faculties: genuine, specific academic motivation for the programme and university
All faculties: completion of all required documents before the deadline without exception
Computer science / STEM faculties: strong mathematics and relevant science qualification evidence
Medical applicants who submit applications without adequate entrance examination preparation
Motivation letters that describe general career ambitions without specific academic reasoning
Incomplete applications submitted at the last minute without certified document translations
Applications that arrive after the faculty deadline — no extensions are granted under any circumstances
For medical applicants, the strategic challenge is almost entirely about entrance examination preparation — not written materials. For humanities applicants, the motivation letter is the sole qualitative differentiating document. Understanding which challenge applies to your target programme is the foundational application strategy step.
Application Strategy by Programme Type — What to Prioritise
Begin entrance examination preparation 12 months before the examination date. Work through biology, chemistry, and physics at university-entrance level, not just school level. Use past examination papers from Charles University medical faculties. Physics is the highest-risk component — do not neglect it. The motivation or personal statement plays no role in medical admissions.
Admission is typically based on secondary qualifications. Ensure your mathematics performance is strong — A in A-Level Mathematics, HL Maths AA 6 or 7 in IB, or equivalent. Confirm the qualifying criteria for your specific programme in the studycharles.cz catalogue. No essay required.
Where a motivation letter is required, this is the primary qualitative element of the application. It should be programme-specific, research-aware, and explain concretely why you are applying to Charles University's Faculty of Arts / Humanities / Social Sciences in particular — not just why you want to study the subject generally.
Admission based primarily on secondary school qualifications with emphasis on science subject performance. Some Master's and doctoral programmes require a research proposal. Undergraduate admissions are generally qualifications-based with no essay component.
Choosing What to Write in Your Motivation Letter — The Decision That Shapes It
For the minority of Charles University applicants who must write a motivation letter, the topic selection question is: what specific academic experience or interest connects most directly to the programme you are applying to? The answer should be grounded in actual academic work, not generic ambition.
The letter should explain your specific reasons for this programme at this faculty at Charles University — not 'I want to study international relations' in general, but 'the Faculty of Social Sciences' research focus on post-1989 Central European transitions directly connects to my interest in X'.
Reference specific academic work — extended essays, independent research, coursework — that demonstrates genuine intellectual engagement with the field. A reviewer can immediately distinguish a student who has done substantive academic work in the area from one who has not.
Prague and Charles University Specifically
Explain why Charles University in Prague — not just any European university. Proximity to Central European history, specific faculty expertise, the 4EU+ Alliance research network, or other genuine reasons for this specific institution strengthen the case over generic European university interest.
Tychr's brainstorming framework for Charles University motivation letters begins with two questions: (1) what academic work have you done that connects most directly to this programme? and (2) what specifically about Charles University's faculty, research, or context connects to that work? Every effective motivation letter can answer both questions concretely.
Generic statements about wanting to study in Europe or experience a new culture
Career goals without academic reasoning — 'I want to become a doctor' without substantive academic engagement
Lists of achievements that duplicate the CV without adding narrative context
References to Charles University's ranking without any substantive academic reasoning
Application Mistakes That Cost Charles University Admissions — And How to Avoid Them
Applying for medicine without a structured entrance examination preparation plan — the most common and most avoidable cause of rejection
Missing faculty deadlines — no extensions exist; a late application means waiting a full academic year
Submitting documents without certified translations — uncertified foreign documents are typically rejected at the faculty office
Writing a generic motivation letter with no programme-specific content — immediately visible to faculty reviewers who read many applications
Neglecting the physics component of the medical entrance examination — most commonly underperformed by biology/chemistry-strong students
Assuming a central application system exists — each faculty must be applied to independently; there is no Common App equivalent
Failing to obtain an English proficiency certificate before the application deadline — score reports take time to arrange and process
Does Charles University require a personal statement or essay?
For most English-taught programmes — including medicine, computer science, and natural sciences — no personal statement or essay is required. A motivation letter may be required by Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Humanities, or Faculty of Social Sciences programmes. Confirm the requirement for your specific programme in the studycharles.cz catalogue.
What is the hardest part of a Charles University medical application?
The entrance examination, without question. The biology, chemistry, and physics examination tests university-entrance-level content in three subjects simultaneously. Students who underestimate the examination — or who have strong biology and chemistry but weak physics — regularly score below the 244/330 passing threshold. Begin preparation at least 12 months in advance.
Can I use Common App to apply to Charles University?
No. Charles University does not participate in the Common Application. Applications are submitted directly to individual faculty Admissions Offices through faculty-specific forms. Start at studycharles.cz to find the correct application form for your target programme.
How long should a Charles University motivation letter be?
Typically 1–2 pages. The faculty's specific guidance should be followed where provided. The letter should be concise, specific, and substantive — demonstrating genuine academic engagement with the field and specific reasons for choosing Charles University's programme. Longer is not better; precision is.
Is there an interview for Charles University undergraduate programmes?
The medical entrance oral interview (30 points additional) is the closest equivalent. It is conducted in English for English-programme applicants and focuses on scientific reasoning and motivation for medicine — not a personal or character interview. Most non-medical undergraduate programmes do not include interviews.
How early should I start the application process?
For medicine: begin entrance examination preparation 12 months before the examination date — typically meaning Year 12 or equivalent. For other programmes: begin the application process at least 4–6 months before the faculty deadline to allow time for document translation, English proficiency testing, and application form completion. Most faculty deadlines fall between February and April.
What happens if I miss the application deadline?
No exceptions are made. Charles University explicitly states that applications received after the closing date are not accepted regardless of circumstances. Missing a deadline means reapplying for the next academic year's intake.
Do I need to speak Czech to study at Charles University?
No, for English-taught programmes. All programme instruction, examinations, and academic interaction is in English for English-taught programmes. Knowledge of Czech is not required for admission or study. Learning basic Czech will significantly improve daily life in Prague, but it is not a requirement.
