QS #22 and THE #20 worldwide — consistently among the top 25 universities on Earth, and the second-ranked institution in Switzerland. EPFL's research output in robotics, photonics, neuroscience, and quantum computing rivals institutions twice its size.
Annual tuition for international students is strikingly low compared to peers in the US or UK. Combined with Switzerland's scholarship ecosystem and the EPFL Excellence Fellowship, a top-25 STEM education is financially accessible for the right candidates.
55% of students are international — one of the highest ratios of any research university in the world. With students and faculty from over 120 countries, EPFL's environment is genuinely cosmopolitan, and English is the language of the Master's level.
92% of graduates are employed within six months of graduation. EPFL's proximity to Switzerland's pharma, watchmaking, banking, and deep-tech sectors — alongside strong ties to Google, Nestlé, Logitech, Roche, and Novartis — ensures a fast transition from campus to career.
Lausanne sits on Lake Geneva, surrounded by the Alps and Jura mountains. Home of the International Olympic Committee, a 10-minute train from Geneva International Airport, and a hub for global organisations. Safety, quality of life, and connectivity are unmatched.
EPFL has generated over 350 spinout companies, with a dedicated Innovation Park adjacent to campus housing multinationals and startups alike. Students and researchers work directly with industry partners — a living-laboratory model rare even among top global institutions.
EPFL is not simply a prestigious European university. It is a research engine that punches well above its size in global rankings and real-world impact, set in a multilingual country that sits at the heart of European innovation. For ambitious STEM-focused international students, it represents one of the highest-value propositions in global higher education.
Research Prestige, Affordability & Career Outcomes
Bachelor-level acceptance rate — but the real filter is the propédeutique year
IB: 38 points minimum, HL Mathematics grade 5+
German Abitur and French Baccalauréat: top-grade profiles
EPFL evaluates international diplomas through a recognition framework (Reconnaissance des titres). Category A diplomas (IB 38+, A*A*A, top Abitur, etc.) grant direct admission. Others may require the entrance exam or a preparatory year.
Bachelor: French B2 minimum (DELF, DALF, TCF, TEF)
Master (English-taught): IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL iBT 100
Exemption: fully French- or English-medium prior schooling
No SAT, ACT, or GRE required or considered
Language certification is mandatory — not optional. Bachelor programmes are taught entirely in French; approximately 95% of Master programmes are in English. The language requirement must be documented before admission.
Strong mathematics and physics grades are the primary signal
GPA benchmark equivalent: 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale
Consistent high performance across final 2–3 years
No interviews, no extracurriculars considered at Bachelor level
Unlike holistic US admissions, EPFL Bachelor entry is grades-based. Exceptional performance in mathematics, physics, and chemistry is the dominant signal. Master admissions additionally consider undergraduate GPA, research experience, and a motivation letter.
Qualifications, Language & Academic Profile
EPFL Application Components — IS-Academia Portal, Documents & Requirements
Certified official copies and translations of all secondary school diplomas and transcripts. EPFL determines your admission pathway (direct, exam, or preparatory year) from this document.
Bachelor: French B2 (DELF, DALF, TCF, or TEF). Master (English-taught): IELTS Academic 7.0 or TOEFL iBT 100. Native speakers or those from fully French/English-medium schools may qualify for exemption.
A copy of your valid travel document is required for all applicants at all levels as part of identity verification.
A 1–2 page professional academic document explaining your background, research interests, and reasons for choosing your specific EPFL Master programme. This is not a personal statement — it is a research-focused professional letter.
Letters from academics who supervised your thesis, final-year project, or research internship. Generic letters from professors who barely know your work are significantly less effective than specific, evidence-rich letters from closer mentors.
A structured 1–2 page academic and professional CV including education, research experience, publications (if any), internships, and technical skills.
Master applicants may tick the Excellence Fellowship box on the IS-Academia application form. No separate application is required — the admissions committee reviews top-ranked applicants automatically.
EPFL uses its own IS-Academia online portal — there is no Common App, UCAS, or coalition platform. All documents are uploaded directly. The process is streamlined but unforgiving: missing documents or late submissions are not accommodated. Apply early.
Bachelor applicants: there is no essay to write
EPFL Bachelor admissions are entirely grades- and qualification-based. There is no personal statement, motivation letter, or essay of any kind. Every hour spent on essay preparation is better spent on mathematics, physics, and French fluency.
Master applicants: the motivation letter is your entire written case
It is the only document where you speak directly to the admissions committee. It must be specific, research-focused, and professionally written. A generic letter loses to a specific one — every time.
Name specific professors and reference their work
EPFL's admissions readers can tell immediately whether you have done your homework. Vague enthusiasm for 'exciting research at EPFL' is unconvincing. Demonstrating that you have read Professor X's recent Nature paper and see a connection to your own thesis is not.
The motivation letter is not a US personal statement. Do not exceed two pages. EPFL does not specify a word count, but reviewers value concision — two precise pages of substance beats three pages of filler.

EPFL Written Application — Motivation Letter Strategy for Master Applicants
Bachelor applications require no essay or personal statement of any kind. Selection is based purely on academic qualifications and language certification.
A 1–2 page free-form professional letter covering: (1) your academic background and thesis/project work, (2) specific research interests and the EPFL group or faculty member you want to work with, and (3) why this programme at EPFL.
Master Level — Motivation Letter (Required)
PhD applications typically require a research proposal and direct contact with a potential supervisor before submitting a formal application. PhD admissions at EPFL are decentralised by research group.
PhD Level — Research Proposal + Supervisor Contact
Writing a life-story personal statement instead of a focused, research-professional motivation letter — the two formats are entirely different.
The most common EPFL Master essay mistake
EPFL's first year is dominated by an intensive mathematics sequence. Students without a demonstrably strong secondary school mathematics foundation — HL Maths AA (IB), A-Level Further Mathematics, or equivalent — face serious risk in the propédeutique examinations.
Physics and chemistry grades matter at Bachelor level. EPFL's propédeutique tests both rigorously, and weaknesses in Year 1 science translate directly into examination failure. Strong secondary school performance in these subjects is the most predictive signal.
Unlike holistic US admissions, EPFL does not look for an upward trend or a compelling narrative of growth. Consistent high grades across your final 2–3 years of secondary school are what the admissions system reads and weights.
For Bachelor applicants: genuine French fluency, not just a B2 certificate obtained by cramming. For Master applicants: demonstrated academic English through your undergraduate work and application documents. Language is not a soft requirement — it determines whether you can function in the classroom.
At Master level, EPFL looks for applicants whose academic background and stated research interests genuinely align with the programme and, ideally, with specific faculty research groups. Applications that demonstrate awareness of EPFL's actual research agenda outperform generic ones.
EPFL explicitly acknowledges the psychological pressure of its curriculum. The propédeutique failure rate is real. Students who have demonstrated the ability to work under academic pressure — through competitive examinations, high-stakes qualifications, or demanding coursework — are valued.
EPFL's evaluation process is substantially different from holistic US admissions. At Bachelor level, it is a grades-and-qualifications review — no essays, no interviews, no extracurricular consideration. At Master level, the academic transcript, research experience, and motivation letter are the key inputs. Understanding this clearly is the foundation of any EPFL strategy.
EPFL Financial Aid & Scholarships for International Students
Tuition and cost figures are sourced from EPFL's published data. Aid availability and scholarship amounts may change — confirm current figures at epfl.ch before applying.
EPFL does not operate a large-scale need-based loan or grant system comparable to US need-blind universities. However, extremely low tuition combined with targeted merit scholarships (Excellence Fellowship, CHF 14,000–32,000/year) means that high-achieving Master applicants can access a top-25 education at a total cost that compares favourably with mid-tier universities globally.
EPFL's approach to financial aid differs fundamentally from US universities. Rather than need-blind admissions and large grant packages, Switzerland keeps base tuition low for all students — international student tuition is approximately USD 5,475/year. Merit-based Excellence Fellowships target the top 5% of incoming Master applicants. Additional need-based support exists but is limited in scope. International students should plan financing as primarily their own responsibility.
The Swiss Model — Low Tuition, Not Large Need-Based Grants
Funding Landscape for International Master Applicants
Excellence Fellowship: CHF 14,000–32,000/year for top 5% of Master applicants

Master Application Deadline (Autumn intake)
Excellence Fellowship (secondary deadline)
Single intake — one chance per year, no rolling admissions
All applicants assessed on the same timeline — no strategic early-round advantage
Autumn-intake Master deadline (15 Dec) allows time for final undergraduate results
Excellence Fellowship assessed concurrently — no separate application needed
Bachelor deadlines (30 April) give time to finalise language certification
No early decision advantage — the single round means no timing strategy
Late discovery of Category B/C status (entrance exam required) can disrupt planning
Master spring intakes exist but are programme-specific — verify before planning
Missing the deadline means waiting a full year — no exceptions
EPFL Application Timeline — Single Intake, No Early Rounds
EPFL operates on a single main intake per year (autumn semester start). There is no early decision, early action, or rolling admissions — apply once, on time, with complete documentation. The Excellence Fellowship for Master applicants is assessed at the same time as the regular application.
Submit your EPFL application as early as possible within the window — not to gain a strategic advantage (EPFL does not operate rolling admissions) but to allow time to correct any document errors. For Master applicants targeting the Excellence Fellowship, ensure your motivation letter and references are the strongest they can be before the 15 December deadline. For Bachelor applicants: confirm your diploma category via swissuniversities.ch by Year 11, and secure your French B2 certificate well before April.
No interviews — purely grades and qualifications
Rarely interviews — most programmes select from written application alone
Supervisor contact before application is standard; informal interviews may occur
Computational Neuroscience and Quantitative Finance may interview shortlisted candidates
EPFL Interviews — What to Expect (And What Replaces Them)
EPFL does not ask this — but your motivation letter must answer it implicitly and specifically. Referencing specific labs, professors, and research themes is the written equivalent.
For PhD applicants reaching out to supervisors: have a concrete answer about your previous research, what you found, and what you want to explore next. Supervisors are evaluating whether you think like a researcher.
What research have you done, and what do you want to do next?
For the rare programmes that do interview: be prepared to discuss your undergraduate thesis or final project in technical depth — including methodology, limitations, and how you would extend it.
Walk me through your undergraduate thesis.
If you are contacting a potential PhD supervisor, read their recent papers and identify a specific question their work raises that you want to pursue. This is what separates a compelling cold email from one that is ignored.
What specific research question do you want to address at EPFL?
EPFL does not conduct interviews for Bachelor or most Master programmes. Your written application — qualification category, language certificate, and (at Master level) motivation letter and references — is your complete submission. There is no interview to prepare for in the standard process. The exception is PhD admissions, where contacting a potential supervisor directly is expected and early informal conversations are common. For one or two specialised Master programmes, shortlisted candidates may be contacted for interviews — check your specific programme page.
Primary student housing provider, subsidised rates, 6–18 month waitlist
FMEL managed, walking distance from main campus buildings
FMEL managed, quieter woodland setting above campus
Joint EPFL–UNIL housing for students at both institutions
Studios CHF 900–1,400/month; shared rooms CHF 600–900/month
Facebook groups and flatshare platforms active — advertise early
EPFL Housing & Residential Life in Lausanne
EPFL does not operate a Harvard-style residential house system with faculty associates and formal house cultures. Housing is primarily managed through FMEL (Fondation des Maisons pour Etudiants de Lausanne), a student housing association that provides affordable on-campus and nearby accommodation. The FMEL waitlist is 6–18 months — apply the moment you receive any indication of acceptance.
Apply to FMEL immediately upon receiving your EPFL acceptance (logement.epfl.ch) — the longer you wait, the longer the wait
FMEL offers studio rooms from approximately CHF 500–850/month, far below Lausanne market rates
Private accommodation in Lausanne typically costs CHF 900–1,400/month for a studio
The campus is served by the M1 metro line — commuting from central Lausanne or nearby Renens is practical and affordable
Apply simultaneously to FMEL and private options — do not wait for FMEL confirmation before exploring alternatives
Microengineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering
STI covers the core engineering disciplines and feeds directly into Switzerland's precision-engineering and manufacturing sectors. Microengineering is an EPFL speciality not offered at scale elsewhere.
School of Computer & Communication Sciences (IC)
Computer Science, Communication Systems, Data Science
IC is EPFL's most globally competitive school at Master level. Computer Science, Data Science, and Cybersecurity programmes attract thousands of qualified international applicants. A strong undergraduate GPA and demonstrated programming depth are essential.
Life Sciences Engineering, Bioengineering
Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, Blue Brain Project
SV's life sciences engineering programme bridges biology, chemistry, and engineering. Its proximity to Switzerland's pharma corridor (Basel–Zurich–Lausanne) gives graduates direct access to the world's most concentrated cluster of life-sciences employers.
SB produces some of EPFL's highest-achieving PhD students, with strong placement at ETH Zurich, MIT, and leading research institutes including CERN. For students with pure science ambitions, SB's mathematics and physics programmes are world-class.
School of Architecture, Civil & Environmental Engineering (ENAC)
Architecture, Civil Engineering, Environmental Sciences
French (Bachelor) / English+French (Master)
ENAC's Architecture programme has produced some of Switzerland's most prominent practitioners. Environmental Sciences and Civil Engineering connect to Switzerland's infrastructure, water management, and sustainability sectors.
College of Management of Technology (CDM)
Management of Technology, Financial Engineering, Energy Management
Quantitative finance, tech management, consultancy
CDM bridges EPFL's technical depth with business and finance. Financial Engineering and Management of Technology are particularly strong for students aiming at quantitative roles in Swiss or global financial institutions.
Innovation Park — Industry & Startup Ecosystem
EPFL's Innovation Park sits adjacent to campus and houses over 250 companies — from multinationals to early-stage startups. Students and researchers work directly alongside industry from Year 1. It has generated over 350 EPFL spinout companies.
EPFL Student Projects — Semester & Master's Projects
EPFL Bachelor students complete semester projects with faculty labs from Year 3. Master students undertake a year-long Master's thesis or project in a research laboratory or with an industry partner. These are the primary differentiation tools for PhD and job applications.
From Formula Student (EPFL's race-car-building team) and Swissloop (hyperloop pod) to music, mountaineering, and entrepreneurship. The Agepoly student union coordinates and subsidises most associations — one of the most active student scenes in Europe.
Designed by Pritzker-winning architects SANAA, the Rolex Learning Centre is the beating heart of campus — a single undulating building that serves as library, study space, café, and social hub for all 13,000 students. It is genuinely used daily, not just photographed.

Employed or in graduate school within 6 months
Google, Microsoft, Meta, Apple, Oracle, Logitech (HQ in Lausanne) — EPFL's IC School is a primary feeder for the most competitive engineering and data science roles in European and global tech.
Novartis, Roche, Lonza, Syngenta — Switzerland's pharma and biotech corridor (Basel–Zurich–Lausanne) is the world's most concentrated life-sciences employment cluster. EPFL life sciences graduates have a structural geographic advantage.
UBS, Credit Suisse (legacy), Julius Bär, quantitative hedge funds — CDM's Financial Engineering programme and EPFL's mathematical rigour make graduates competitive for quantitative finance roles in Switzerland's world-class banking sector.
EPFL graduates benefit from both the institution's global prestige (QS #22, THE #20) and Switzerland's unique position as a hub for technology, pharmaceuticals, precision engineering, and finance. 92% of graduates are employed within six months, with an average starting salary of approximately USD 85,000. An EPFL degree is globally recognised, and graduates regularly transition to PhD programmes at MIT, Stanford, and ETH Zurich, or to international roles across North America, Asia, and the Middle East.
I applied to EPFL's Data Science Master with a strong GPA but a generic motivation letter that said nothing specific about EPFL's research. Tychr helped me rewrite it to reference three specific IC School research groups and connect their work to my Bachelor thesis on graph neural networks. I received the Excellence Fellowship alongside my admission.
My diploma fell into Category B — I needed the entrance exam. Tychr identified this six months in advance and built a preparation plan focused on EPFL's specific mathematics and physics syllabus. I passed the exam and enrolled in Mechanical Engineering. Without the early warning, I would have missed the window entirely.
EPFL — Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering
EPFL's robotics programme was my first choice, but the Master admission process felt opaque compared to US schools. Tychr helped me structure my letter, coached me on identifying the right research group, and reviewed my references. The specificity made the difference.
Can I apply to EPFL if my secondary school was in English?
Yes — but remember that all Bachelor programmes are taught in French. You will need a French B2 language certificate regardless of where you studied. Your English-medium schooling helps for Master applications, where IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL iBT 100 is required and most programmes are taught in English.
What IB score do I need for direct Bachelor admission?
EPFL requires a minimum of 38 IB Diploma points, with Higher Level Mathematics at grade 5 or above, for direct Category A Bachelor admission. Students below this threshold may still be eligible via the entrance examination, though the pass rate is approximately 40–50%.
No. EPFL does not use SAT or ACT scores in admissions decisions at any level. Secondary school grades and recognised qualification frameworks are what matter.
How competitive are EPFL Master's admissions?
Very competitive in the most popular programmes. Computer Science, Data Science, and Robotics receive large global applicant pools. A high undergraduate GPA from a recognised institution, research experience, and a specific, compelling motivation letter are all expected of successful applicants. There is no published acceptance rate for Master programmes.
Does EPFL offer need-based financial aid to international students?
EPFL's main merit scholarship (Excellence Fellowship) is open to all nationalities for Master applicants. Need-based support (Social Scholarship, Hans Wilsdorf Foundation) is available after enrolment but is limited in scope. International students should plan financing independently and treat scholarships as a competitive supplement, not a guarantee.
Both levels are excellent, but the experience differs significantly. The Bachelor is entirely in French, intensely mathematical, and has a notoriously demanding first year (propédeutique). The Master's level is predominantly in English, more research-oriented, and the most straightforward entry point for strong international students from English-medium undergraduate programmes.
Can I work part-time in Switzerland as an international student?
Non-EU/EFTA students may work up to 15 hours per week once enrolled (subject to canton regulations). However, Swiss labour regulations are strict, job availability for non-French/German speakers is limited, and EPFL's academic workload is demanding enough that relying heavily on part-time work is not advised.
Very difficult. EPFL's own housing (via FMEL) has waiting lists of 6–18 months. Apply immediately upon receiving your acceptance letter. Private accommodation in Lausanne is expensive — budget CHF 800–1,400/month for a studio or shared room. On-campus FMEL housing (CHF 500–850/month) is significantly cheaper if you secure a place.
Getting into EPFL is about demonstrating that you are genuinely ready for what it will demand of you — not just academically, but linguistically and mentally.

EPFL Academic Requirements — The Honest Breakdown for International Students
What qualification, grade profile, and language level do you need to succeed at EPFL? And what does the propédeutique year mean for students from IB, A-Level, and other international curricula?
EPFL does not publish a minimum GPA in the US sense. The institution evaluates academic performance through the lens of recognised secondary school qualifications and their equivalence frameworks. In practical terms, the competitive floor for international applicants is approximately 3.5 on a 4.0 GPA scale — but the actual signal EPFL reads is your performance in mathematics, physics, and chemistry at the most rigorous level available in your curriculum.
GPA benchmark (competitive floor equivalent)
EPFL and Academic Grades — What the Data Shows
A strong GPA in the wrong subjects is insufficient. EPFL's first year assumes a high level of preparation specifically in mathematics and physics. Students with strong grades only in humanities or social sciences will find the propédeutique exceptionally challenging.
International students from systems without a formal GPA (IB, UK A-Levels, French Baccalauréat, German Abitur) are evaluated on their grades relative to the norms of their specific qualification. A 44 IB score with 7s in HL Maths and HL Physics is weighted differently from a 44 score across non-STEM subjects.
What this means for international students
Unlike holistic US admissions, EPFL does not reward an upward trajectory or place weight on a compelling narrative of academic recovery. What matters is consistent high performance across the final two to three years of secondary school. An early weak year followed by improvement reads less favourably at EPFL than it might at a US university.
EPFL evaluates international qualifications through a formal framework called Reconnaissance des titres (recognition of qualifications), maintained in collaboration with swissuniversities.ch. Every national secondary diploma has a classification that determines the admission pathway.
Category A diplomas (Swiss Matura, German Abitur at high grades, French Baccalauréat mention Bien or Très Bien, IB 38+ with HL Maths 5+, UK A-Levels A*A*A) grant direct Bachelor admission without an entrance exam. Category B diplomas require the examen d'admission. Category C diplomas require the Cours de Mathématiques Spéciales preparatory year or the entrance exam.
Many international applicants discover their diploma's category later than is ideal. The category determines your entire application timeline and preparation requirements. A Category B student who discovers they need the entrance exam in April — when the Bachelor deadline is April 30 — has almost no preparation time. Check your category via swissuniversities.ch in Year 11 or earlier.
Why verifying your category early is critical
How EPFL Reads International Academic Records — The Recognition Framework
If your secondary school is from a country or system not commonly seen by Swiss admissions offices, contact EPFL's admission services directly (admission@epfl.ch) to clarify your diploma's category before planning your application. Tychr can assist with this evaluation as part of the initial profile review.
For students from less-common educational systems
EPFL does not consider SAT scores in any admissions decision. Neither the SAT nor the ACT is part of the Swiss university admissions framework. This section explains how US-curriculum students (AP + SAT) are evaluated at EPFL.
SAT Scores at EPFL — Not Required, Not Considered
For US-curriculum applicants, AP Calculus BC, AP Physics C, and AP Chemistry scores are the relevant academic signals — not the SAT. EPFL evaluates your transcript relative to the AP curriculum's depth, particularly in mathematics and sciences.
If you are a US-curriculum student targeting EPFL, invest preparation time in AP course depth in mathematics and sciences rather than in SAT preparation. Your AP transcript is what EPFL will read.
US high school students applying to EPFL should submit their AP transcripts and scores as evidence of academic rigour. A student with 5s in AP Calculus BC, AP Physics C (Mechanics and E&M), AP Chemistry, and AP Computer Science has an academic profile that signals EPFL readiness clearly.
EPFL does not consider ACT scores. Neither the ACT nor the SAT is part of EPFL's admissions framework at any level.
ACT Scores at EPFL — Not Part of the Admissions Process
EPFL does not have a superscore policy because it does not use standardised tests at all. Your academic evaluation is based entirely on your secondary school qualification, grades, and language certification.
Your national secondary school diploma category (A, B, or C under EPFL's recognition framework) is the equivalent of the US standardised test in terms of admission pathway.
The Swiss equivalent of standardised testing
Language certification (French B2 for Bachelor; IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 100 for English-taught Master) is the one mandatory standardised test all EPFL applicants must provide.
For US students: AP exam scores (not SAT/ACT) serve as the relevant academic depth signal. A strong AP record in mathematics and sciences is the US-curriculum equivalent of a competitive secondary profile.
Do not waste preparation time on SAT or ACT if EPFL is your primary target. Prioritise AP depth in mathematics, physics, and sciences (for US-curriculum students), and French language acquisition for Bachelor applicants.
EPFL's 'test policy' is not optional versus required in the US sense — it is simply that EPFL has never used US-style standardised tests. The institution evaluates academic preparation through the lens of recognised national secondary qualifications and their Swiss equivalence category.
EPFL does not require, accept, or consider SAT, ACT, or GRE scores in any admissions decision. The mandatory tests are language certifications: French B2 (Bachelor) and English C1 (Master, English-taught programmes).
French B2 certification (DELF, DALF, TCF, or TEF) — mandatory for all Bachelor applicants.
IELTS Academic 7.0 or TOEFL iBT 100 — mandatory for Master applicants to English-taught programmes unless exempt.
Cambridge C1 Advanced (180+) or C2 Proficiency — also accepted for English requirement.
ACT scores — not part of the EPFL application at any level.
GRE scores — not required for Master or PhD applications at EPFL.
Many students applying from the US or US-curriculum schools assume EPFL will want SAT scores as evidence of academic ability. This is incorrect — submitting SAT scores adds no value and may signal unfamiliarity with the Swiss system. EPFL's admissions framework is entirely separate from the US model.
For IB applicants: course selection matters. HL Mathematics (Analysis and Approaches — NOT Applications and Interpretations) is expected for virtually all EPFL programmes. Students who chose HL Maths AI will find the EPFL Year 1 mathematics sequence extremely challenging. The Extended Essay in a STEM subject adds useful context for Master applications but is not formally evaluated at Bachelor level.
Grade 5 minimum (grade 6 or 7 strongly recommended)
HL Maths AA + HL Physics or Chemistry + one more HL science or computer science
Entrance exam (Category B route) for IB 34–37
A-Level applicants: A*A*A is the benchmark for direct Category A admission. A*A*A with Mathematics, Further Mathematics, and Physics is the ideal STEM profile. Students with AAA (without A*s) may fall into Category B and require the entrance exam. EPFL understands the UK A-Level system and evaluates it in context.
Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry
Likely Category B — entrance exam required
Reviewed as supporting evidence of academic preparation
IB Diploma and A-Levels at EPFL — Specific Benchmarks and Pathways
AP courses are evaluated by EPFL as evidence of academic depth within the US curriculum. They are not required, not a substitute for the Swiss qualification equivalence framework, and carry no formal weight in EPFL's admission decision — but they provide contextual evidence of rigour for US-curriculum applicants.
AP Calculus BC (5), AP Physics C: Mechanics (5), AP Physics C: Electricity & Magnetism (5), AP Chemistry (5), AP Computer Science A (5) — this combination signals the quantitative and scientific preparation that EPFL's first year assumes. A 5 in AP Calculus BC is the US equivalent of HL Maths AA grade 7.
What EPFL is looking for from AP students
EPFL does not publish AP credit policies for incoming students in the same way US universities do. AP scores do not exempt students from EPFL's propédeutique examinations — all students complete the first-year filter regardless of prior preparation.
A US-curriculum student with 5s across AP Calculus BC, AP Physics C, AP Chemistry, and AP Computer Science has an academic profile that is clearly competitive for EPFL. Their diploma category will be determined by the overall AP/high school transcript evaluation — contact EPFL admissions for the specific category assignment.
AP Courses and EPFL — What Counts for US-Curriculum Applicants
EPFL does not award AP course credit that exempts students from first-year requirements. The propédeutique is mandatory for all Bachelor students — it serves as a second selection filter, not a formality.
International students at non-AP schools should not artificially pursue AP qualifications for EPFL. The IB Diploma or A-Levels are the natural qualification frameworks and are evaluated equivalently.
EPFL's admission process places the strongest weight on the rigour and results of your secondary school education — particularly in mathematics, physics, and chemistry. The institution's first-year curriculum is designed to challenge even highly prepared students.
Rigour of Secondary School Record — EPFL's Most Important Academic Signal
Taking the most mathematically and scientifically demanding courses available at your specific school, and achieving strong results in them.
Rigour is always evaluated in the context of what was available. A student from a school that only offers Mathematics Standard Level (IB) who achieves a 7 demonstrates more relative to their context than a student who chose SL Mathematics when HL was available. However, for EPFL admission, the absolute level of mathematics preparation must be sufficient for the Year 1 curriculum — relative excellence within a low-rigour profile is not enough.
For EPFL, rigour means choosing HL Mathematics (AA) over SL, taking Further Mathematics at A-Level, pursuing the highest mathematics track available in your national system — and achieving strong results in it. This is not simply about appearing ambitious; it is about arriving with the preparation the curriculum demands.
A student who took IB HL Maths AA, HL Physics, and HL Chemistry simultaneously with strong results demonstrates exactly the preparation profile EPFL values. EPFL's admissions team reads transcripts experienced in identifying whether a student challenged themselves mathematically — or whether they optimised for grades in easier subjects.
EPFL's Bachelor first year (propédeutique) is a shared, intensive foundation that all students complete regardless of their chosen programme. It tests mathematics, physics, and chemistry at a level that assumes advanced secondary preparation. Students who arrive underprepared in any of these three subjects face very high failure rates.
Mathematics, Physics, and Science Preparation — What EPFL Actually Expects
HL Mathematics Analysis & Approaches (IB) or A-Level Mathematics + Further Mathematics. EPFL's Year 1 Analysis and Linear Algebra courses assume fluency with calculus, functions, and proof-based reasoning at the HL AA or A-Level Further Mathematics level. Students with HL Maths Applications & Interpretations, or only Standard Level mathematics, are consistently underprepared for the propédeutique.
HL Physics (IB) or A-Level Physics at A* grade. EPFL's first-year physics covers mechanics, electromagnetism, and thermodynamics at university level. Strong secondary school physics is prerequisite knowledge — the lectures assume it, not develop it from first principles.
For Life Sciences Engineering, Architecture, and Chemistry programmes: HL Chemistry (IB) or A-Level Chemistry. For Computer Science and Communication Systems programmes: programming experience (Python, Java, C++) and some discrete mathematics exposure before arrival is strongly recommended, though not formally required.
Language requirements at EPFL are strict, mandatory, and non-negotiable. Unlike US universities, where essays serve as a proxy language assessment, EPFL requires formal certification. The specific requirement depends entirely on your programme level.
Language Requirements for International EPFL Applicants — French and English
French B2 for the Bachelor is a minimum, not a target. EPFL's Year 1 courses are delivered in fast-paced academic French by professors who will not simplify their language for non-native speakers. A student who obtained B2 through intensive cramming but lacks genuine fluency will struggle to keep pace from the first week. Aim for C1 if you are targeting the Bachelor.
Bachelor applicants who are not native French speakers should begin serious French study no later than Year 10, targeting C1 level before arrival. Master applicants from English-medium undergraduate programmes may be exempt from the language test — document your English-medium institution clearly in your application. EPFL does not accept Duolingo English Test scores; use IELTS or TOEFL.
Practical guidance for international applicants
EPFL admits students to specific programmes (not to a broad college with later specialisation). The academic profile should align with the chosen programme's expectations. The table below shows the key academic signals for major EPFL programmes.
HL Maths AA 6–7, AP Calculus BC 5, USACO / competitive programming
HL Maths AA / Further Maths A*; French B2 (Bachelor) or IELTS 7 (Master)
Strong statistics/probability background, ML projects or research
High undergraduate GPA; quantitative undergraduate degree
HL Maths AA 7, HL Physics 7, physics olympiad participation
HL Maths + HL Physics; top A-Level profile
HL Maths AA 7, robotics project experience, programming fluency
High GPA; engineering or CS undergraduate
HL Chemistry 7, HL Biology or Life Sciences, research internship
Life sciences undergraduate; research experience
HL Maths AA 7, HL Physics 7, HL Chemistry 7
Top STEM profile; Swiss Matura / IB 40+ / A*A*A*
Portfolio of design work; spatial reasoning; maths proficiency
Strong maths + design portfolio; French B2 (Bachelor)
Quantitative finance background; strong probability and stats
Maths or engineering undergraduate; CDM Master
Academic Requirements by EPFL Programme — What Each School Expects
Well understood and systematically evaluated. EPFL's admissions team has decades of experience with IB applicants. The choice between HL Maths AA and AI is well known to them — choosing AI signals potential underpreperation for the propédeutique. The EE and TOK are noted but carry minimal formal weight at Bachelor level.
Equally well understood. A*A*A with Mathematics, Further Mathematics, and Physics or Chemistry is the gold standard profile. A-Level Mathematics without Further Mathematics may be evaluated as Category B depending on other grades.
Accepted and evaluated carefully. CBSE students with 95%+ in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry fall into Category A or B depending on the overall profile. JEE Main/Advanced performance is contextual supporting evidence but not formally evaluated. Research experience and IB/A-Level supplementation (if available) strengthen Master applications from Indian undergraduate institutions.
Gaokao results and Chinese high school transcripts are evaluated against EPFL's China-specific equivalence table. High-scoring Gaokao students from leading Chinese schools typically qualify for Category A or B. Chinese undergraduate students applying for Master programmes are evaluated on their university GPA and research record.
German Abitur at grade 1.0–1.8 (German grading scale) typically qualifies for Category A direct admission. Grades 1.9–2.4 may fall into Category B. EPFL specifies the exact Abitur grade threshold on swissuniversities.ch — verify your specific federal state's norms.

Building an EPFL-Ready Academic Profile — What to Do at Each Stage
Academic Mistakes That Cost EPFL Applications — And How to Avoid Them
EPFL's Year 1 mathematics assumes HL Maths AA preparation. Students who chose AI (Applications and Interpretations) to protect their IB score consistently underperform in the propédeutique. This is one of the most documented patterns in EPFL's first-year failure statistics.
Choosing IB Maths Applications & Interpretations instead of Analysis & Approaches
DELF B2 certification is a minimum, not a preparation target. Many students obtain B2 through intensive cramming but lack the fluency to follow fast academic French. Supplement certification with French-medium reading, listening, and speaking practice throughout secondary school.
Having a B2 certificate but insufficient actual French fluency
The propédeutique is not an introduction — it is a second selection filter. Between 35% and 50% of admitted students fail at first sitting depending on the year and programme. Students who arrive underprepared in mathematics, physics, or French face statistically very high failure rates.
The examen d'admission has a pass rate of approximately 40–50%. It is not a guaranteed alternative to direct entry. Students who discover they need the exam at short notice — because they did not check their diploma category early — have almost no time to prepare adequately.
Treating the entrance exam as an easy backup plan
FMEL housing applications must be submitted immediately upon receiving any acceptance signal. Students who wait for a formal offer letter before applying typically face a 6–18 month wait and must pay significantly higher private accommodation costs.
The following profiles represent the academic backgrounds of students Tychr has helped gain EPFL admission or EPFL-equivalent Master outcomes. They illustrate what works — and what the common differentiators are.
What Academic Profiles Tychr's EPFL-Admitted Students Had
IB 41 with HL Maths AA (7), HL Physics (7), HL Computer Science (6). French B2 (DELF). Applied to Bachelor in Computer Science.
The critical factor was not the overall IB score but the specific combination: HL Maths AA grade 7 and strong sciences. Category A direct admission.
Indian engineering undergraduate (IIT Bombay, GPA 9.1/10). Research internship at ETH Zurich. IELTS 7.5. Specific motivation letter referencing Professor X's lab at EPFL's IC School.
Profile 2 — Master (International Engineering)
The research internship at ETH Zurich and the specific motivation letter referencing EPFL lab work were the decisive differentiators in a competitive pool.
UK A-Levels: A* (Further Mathematics), A* (Mathematics), A* (Physics). Category A direct admission. French B2 secured in Year 12.
A standard strong A-Level profile for EPFL. The key decision was taking Further Mathematics — without it, the profile would have been Category B requiring the entrance exam.
A strong IB score is necessary but not sufficient. IB 38 is the minimum for direct admission, but competition is real and the propédeutique is the actual filter. Equally important: HL Maths AA (not AI), strong physics, and genuine French fluency.
EPFL does not publish or consider SAT or ACT scores. Take them if required by other universities on your list, but they add no value to your EPFL application.
No. EPFL Bachelor programmes are taught entirely in French. French B2 is the minimum — but genuine fluency at C1 level is strongly recommended. If you are not willing to commit to French learning, the Master pathway (primarily English) is the more appropriate route.
Can I study at EPFL without speaking French?
The propédeutique is the first-year foundational curriculum shared by all Bachelor students. It covers Analysis, Linear Algebra, Physics, and Chemistry at university level. Depending on the year and programme, 35–50% of students fail at their first attempt. It functions as a second admissions filter.
What is the propédeutique and how hard is it?
Very competitive. Computer Science, Data Science, and Robotics receive large international applicant pools from strong candidates at top universities globally. A high undergraduate GPA (equivalent to 3.7+ on a 4.0 scale), research experience, and a highly specific motivation letter are expected.
How competitive is the EPFL Master in Computer Science?
~USD 5,475/year for international students
CHF 14,000–32,000/year for top Master applicants
EPFL Is Affordable for a Top-25 University — But Switzerland Is Not Cheap
EPFL's tuition is strikingly low for a university ranked #22 globally. But Lausanne's cost of living is genuinely high, and Switzerland does not operate a large-scale need-based aid system. Here is the complete financial picture for international students.
What EPFL Actually Costs — The Full Annual Figure
EPFL Estimated Annual Cost of Attendance (International Students)
Cost of Living (Lausanne — housing, food, transport, personal)
Books, materials, lab supplies, technology
EPFL's tuition (approximately USD 5,475/year for international students) is among the lowest of any top-25 university worldwide. The total cost of attendance is dominated by Lausanne's cost of living — Switzerland's prices are genuinely high. Students who secure FMEL on-campus housing (CHF 500–850/month) reduce their living costs substantially compared to private market rates.
The Key Insight: Tuition Is Low, Living Costs Are Not
Tuition is the smallest component of total cost at EPFL.
Full annual cost including living expenses in Lausanne.
EPFL Financial Aid for International Students — The Honest Picture
EPFL is not a need-blind university in the US sense. Switzerland's model keeps tuition low for all students rather than providing large need-based grants to selected students. International applicants should plan financing as primarily their own responsibility. EPFL's aid programmes target merit (Excellence Fellowship) or post-enrolment hardship (Social Scholarship), not pre-admission need.
Low Tuition for All, Not Large Grants for Some
At US need-blind universities (Harvard, Princeton, MIT), a family's financial circumstances determine the grant package. At EPFL, tuition is low for every student regardless of income — but there is no guarantee of additional financial support beyond merit scholarships. The comparison is: EPFL charges everyone less, rather than charging some nothing.
EPFL does not practice need-blind admissions in the financial-aid sense. Financial situation is not considered in admissions decisions (which are grades-based), but nor does EPFL guarantee aid coverage of need. Aid availability does not factor into who gets admitted.
After admission, international students seeking financial support can apply for the Excellence Fellowship (Master applicants only, assessed at application time), Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships (through home embassy), or post-enrolment EPFL foundation scholarships. None of these cover the full cost of attendance for most students.
Switzerland subsidises EPFL's operating costs through federal funding, keeping tuition dramatically lower than comparable private research universities. This is why a top-25 university charges international students approximately USD 5,475/year in tuition — a fraction of what ETH Zurich's Master programmes cost and roughly one-tenth of a US Ivy League.
For Master applicants who earn the Excellence Fellowship (top ~5% of incoming cohort), the award of CHF 14,000–32,000/year makes EPFL genuinely competitive on total cost with far less prestigious institutions elsewhere. The Fellowship can offset a significant portion of living costs for the highest-achieving international students.
Why EPFL Represents Strong Financial Value at the Quality Level It Delivers
"EPFL is committed to providing the best possible education to students from all over the world, regardless of their financial background — through low tuition and targeted merit support."
At QS #22 and THE #20 globally, EPFL's educational quality rivals institutions that charge three to five times its tuition. The combination of world-class research environment, strong career outcomes (92% employment within 6 months, average starting salary USD 85,000), and comparatively low tuition makes EPFL one of the best value-for-quality propositions in global higher education.
Research home-country scholarships before applying
Identify national scholarship programmes available to citizens studying abroad (Chevening for UK, DAAD for Germany, MEXT for Japan, etc.)
Application windows are often 12–18 months before study start — research in Year 11 or during your penultimate undergraduate year
Home-country scholarships are the primary financial aid route for most international EPFL students. Research and apply early — many have deadlines a year before study start.
Apply for Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship via your embassy
Visit sbfi.admin.ch to confirm eligibility by nationality
Contact your home country's Swiss Embassy for application instructions and local deadline (typically November–January)
Covers tuition plus approximately CHF 1,920/month living stipend for eligible students
The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship (FCS) covers tuition and a monthly living stipend for eligible PhD and select Master students. Applications go through your home country's Swiss Embassy — not through EPFL.
Tick the Excellence Fellowship box in IS-Academia (Master applicants)
On the IS-Academia Master application form, tick 'Excellence Fellowship consideration'
No separate application or additional documents required
The admissions committee reviews top-ranked applicants automatically
The EPFL Excellence Fellowship is the institution's flagship merit scholarship. Master applicants indicate interest in the IS-Academia application — the Fellowship is awarded concurrently with admission to top 5% of incoming cohort.
Apply for FMEL housing immediately upon any acceptance signal
Submit FMEL housing application at logement.epfl.ch the moment you receive acceptance
On-campus housing: CHF 500–850/month vs CHF 900–1,400/month private
Waitlists are 6–18 months — earlier application = better position
Housing is the largest cost-management lever available to EPFL students. On-campus FMEL housing at CHF 500–850/month can save CHF 5,000–7,000/year versus private accommodation.

Securing Funding for EPFL — The Step-by-Step Process
Financial aid at EPFL is not a single application process — it is a multi-source strategy combining home-country scholarships, Swiss government awards, EPFL's own merit fellowship, and housing cost management. Here is the complete process.
https://www.epfl.ch/education/studies/?p=3395
EPFL's financial aid landscape for international students differs fundamentally from US universities. Understanding this clearly prevents misaligned expectations.
Low tuition is the primary financial benefit
At approximately USD 5,475/year, EPFL's tuition is already dramatically lower than comparable institutions. This is the Swiss model's primary financial benefit — low cost for all students, rather than need-based grants for selected ones.
Excellence Fellowship is merit-based, not need-based
EPFL's flagship scholarship for incoming students (the Excellence Fellowship, CHF 14,000–32,000/year) is awarded to the top 5% of Master applicants based purely on academic merit — not financial need. High-achieving students compete for it regardless of family income.
Post-enrolment need-based scholarships are limited
The Hans Wilsdorf Foundation, EPFL Social Scholarship, and Charles Rapin Scholarship provide support for students in financial difficulty after enrolment. These are not large-scale programmes — they are targeted emergency and partial-support mechanisms.
Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships fill a key gap
For PhD and select Master students from eligible countries, the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship (FCS) is the most substantial need-independent award available — covering tuition and approximately CHF 1,920/month. Applications go through home-country embassies, not EPFL.

EPFL Financial Support — What Actually Exists and Who Qualifies
The two most impactful aid routes for high-achieving international Master students are the Excellence Fellowship (merit-based, assessed at application) and the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship (nationality-dependent, applied via embassy). Home-country government scholarships are the most reliable additional funding source.
Award amounts and eligibility are subject to annual change. Confirm current terms directly with EPFL scholarship services and with your home-country Swiss Embassy for government scholarships.
EPFL does not operate an income-band need-based grant formula comparable to Harvard. Aid is either merit-based (Excellence Fellowship), nationality-based (Swiss Government Scholarship), or emergency-based (Social Scholarship). Total aid coverage depends on which awards a student successfully secures.
https://www.epfl.ch/education/studies/?p=3395
EPFL's scholarship landscape is primarily merit-based rather than need-based. Understanding the distinction is important for planning.
The Excellence Fellowship is awarded purely on academic merit — to the top approximately 5% of incoming Master applicants. A student from any income level can receive it. Financial need is not considered, and there is no separate application — the admissions committee identifies top applicants automatically.
The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship (FCS) targets PhD and select Master students from eligible countries. It is administered by SERI through home-country embassies. Eligibility is primarily by nationality and academic profile — not directly by financial need, though country-level development status is a factor in the eligibility framework.
Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship — Nationality-Based
The EPFL Social Scholarship and Hans Wilsdorf Foundation provide support for enrolled students facing genuine financial hardship. These are not pre-admission scholarships — they are post-enrolment support mechanisms for students whose financial situation deteriorates during their studies.
Low tuition (approximately USD 5,475/year for international students) is itself a form of merit-independent financial benefit — all students pay the same low rate regardless of academic excellence or financial need. This is the structural feature that makes EPFL financially distinctive.
Merit and Need-Based Support at EPFL — What Exists and Who Qualifies
Most international students at EPFL supplement the institution's own scholarships with home-country or external awards. This is the most important funding strategy for the majority of international applicants.
External Scholarships for EPFL Students — The Most Important Funding Source
Tychr's scholarship database: As part of every full admissions programme, Tychr identifies external scholarship opportunities relevant to the student's country of origin, intended field, and academic profile. This guidance is provided alongside EPFL application coaching.
Stacking scholarships: External scholarships awarded to EPFL students may or may not interact with EPFL's own awards — confirm with EPFL's scholarship office (scholarship@epfl.ch) whether an external award reduces or supplements any EPFL award. The Excellence Fellowship specifically: check the current policy on combining it with national scholarships.
Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships (FCS)
For PhD + select Master students from eligible countries — administered via home-country Swiss Embassy; covers tuition + CHF 1,920/month
UK government award for exceptional students — supports study at overseas institutions including EPFL
German Academic Exchange Service awards — multiple programmes supporting graduate study at Swiss institutions
Japanese government scholarship for graduate study abroad including at EPFL
India: ICCR awards; UAE/Gulf: various national awards; China: CSC scholarships for overseas graduate study. Research your home country's scholarship landscape thoroughly.
Country-specific government scholarships vary enormously — some cover full costs, others provide supplementary funding. Tychr advises students on the major home-country scholarship programmes and how to apply for them alongside the EPFL application.
EPFL does not offer or administer student loans. The institution's financial support is limited to grants and fellowships. Swiss banks and home-country financial institutions are the relevant sources for students who require loan financing.
EPFL offers no institutional loan products. The institution does not operate a student loan programme. Financial support from EPFL is entirely grant-based (Excellence Fellowship, Social Scholarship, foundation scholarships) — nothing that requires repayment to the institution.
Swiss cantonal banks occasionally offer student loan products for enrolled students. These are not EPFL-administered — students must arrange them independently with Swiss financial institutions. Eligibility varies by nationality and residency status.
For students from countries with developed student loan programmes (UK, US, Canada, Germany, etc.), home-country student loans may be usable for overseas study at EPFL. UK students can use UK government student finance for overseas study at recognised institutions including EPFL. US students: federal student aid is typically not available for overseas study not arranged through a US institution.
The combination of low EPFL tuition, FMEL on-campus housing, and any scholarship income makes EPFL genuinely more financially manageable than its global ranking might suggest. Most international students finance their EPFL studies through a combination of family support, home-country scholarships, and (for Master students) the Excellence Fellowship.
EPFL and Student Loans — No Institutional Loans, Alternative Sources
Non-EU/EFTA students may work up to 15 hours per week in Switzerland once enrolled, subject to cantonal regulations. This provides supplemental income but carries important caveats for international students.
Part-Time Work at EPFL — What to Expect for International Students
Student teaching assistant (assistant étudiant) — grading, lab supervision for Bachelor courses
Research assistant positions in faculty labs — particularly available for Master and PhD students
EPFL canteen and campus service positions
Lausanne hospitality and retail (requires French or German)
Tutoring and academic support via student associations
Non-EU/EFTA students in Switzerland may work up to 15 hours per week during the academic semester and full-time during official academic holidays. The residence permit (permit B or L) must be obtained from the cantonal immigration office within 14 days of arrival. Employment contracts must be declared to the canton. Working without proper authorization carries serious legal risk.
15 hours per week at Swiss minimum wage (approximately CHF 23/hour in most sectors) generates roughly CHF 1,350/month — meaningful supplemental income but insufficient to cover Lausanne living costs independently. EPFL's academic workload in the propédeutique year is intense enough that many students cannot reliably work 15 hours weekly during that period.
Part-time work is optional and entirely student-driven — EPFL does not assign or require an employment component in the way Harvard includes work-study in financial aid packages. It is a supplemental income tool, not a primary financial strategy.
Low tuition all students; Excellence Fellowship top 5%
Low/no tuition; generous EU student funding
International tuition ~£26,000–£37,000/year
International tuition ~EUR 2,000–5,000/year (most Masters)
EPFL vs. Peer Institutions — Cost and Aid Comparison
EPFL has no early decision — a single application round means no timing risk. However, missing the deadline (30 April for Bachelor; 15 December for Master autumn intake) means waiting a full year.
For students comparing EPFL with UK Russell Group or US private universities, EPFL's tuition (approximately USD 5,475/year) is dramatically lower. The total cost of attendance is higher than expected because of Lausanne's cost of living — but against a US Ivy League at USD 85,000/year total, or UK Russell Group at USD 40,000–55,000/year, EPFL at USD 41,700/year total while ranked #22 globally is a strong financial value proposition.
Low tuition (~$5,475) + high Lausanne living costs
What EPFL Actually Costs vs. Alternatives — The Real Comparison
Illustrative Comparison for International Students (Annual + 4-Year)
For a family without access to US need-based aid, EPFL at approximately USD 41,700/year total (QS #22) compares very favourably with Imperial College London (~$45,000–55,000/year, QS ranked similarly) and dramatically better than out-of-state US universities ($55,000–65,000/year). EPFL's value proposition is strongest for high-achieving international students who do not qualify for large need-based aid packages at US universities.
EPFL does not operate a formal financial aid appeal process comparable to US universities' CSS Profile appeals. However, students whose financial situation changes during their studies, or who believe they were not considered for post-enrolment scholarships, have routes to seek support.
Seeking Additional Financial Support at EPFL — Post-Enrolment Options
EPFL is not a need-based aid institution. There is no comprehensive appeal process for students who feel their initial financial support was inadequate. The most effective strategies are: (1) proactive home-country scholarship applications before arrival, (2) securing the Excellence Fellowship at application time, and (3) securing FMEL housing immediately upon acceptance.
Contact EPFL's scholarship office directly: scholarship@epfl.ch
Document your financial circumstances clearly with supporting evidence
Apply for the EPFL Social Scholarship (emergency hardship support) if facing genuine financial crisis
Family financial circumstances have significantly changed during enrolment (job loss, medical expenses, family crisis)
You believe you qualify for a post-enrolment foundation scholarship that you were not notified about
A financial emergency risks interrupting your studies
EPFL's scholarship team (scholarship@epfl.ch) reviews individual cases. Response times vary, but genuine hardship cases are taken seriously. The EPFL Social Scholarship is the main mechanism for emergency support — it is not a large-scale programme but provides meaningful assistance for students whose studies are genuinely at risk.
Research home-country scholarships in Year 11 (Bachelor) or penultimate undergraduate year (Master)
Most national scholarship programmes have deadlines 12–18 months before study start. Research your home country's options for students studying in Switzerland. Identify which require Swiss Embassy contact and which are managed domestically.
Apply for Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship through your embassy
Check sbfi.admin.ch for your country's eligibility and your local Swiss Embassy for the specific application deadline (typically 30 November–31 January). Gather academic records, a research proposal (for PhD), and evidence of EPFL admission or application.
Submit EPFL application and tick Excellence Fellowship (Master)
By 15 December (Master) or 30 April (Bachelor)
Submit all application documents via IS-Academia. Ensure the Excellence Fellowship box is ticked on the Master application form. Ensure certified translations of all documents are complete before the deadline.
Same day as receiving any acceptance signal
Do not wait for a formal acceptance letter if you have received preliminary acceptance or an acceptance signal from a faculty member. Submit the FMEL housing application (logement.epfl.ch) on the same day. Early applications significantly improve your position on the 6–18 month waitlist.
Plan monthly budget and arrange bank account and health insurance
Budget CHF 2,000–2,500/month for Lausanne living. Arrange a Swiss bank account (PostFinance and cantonal banks are accessible for students) and Swiss health insurance (compulsory — arrange before arrival to avoid late penalties).
Planning for EPFL Costs — What to Do and When
EPFL Has No Essays at Bachelor Level — But the Master Motivation Letter Is Everything
EPFL does not use a Common App personal statement, UCAS personal statement, or US-style supplemental essays. Bachelor admissions are purely grades- and qualification-based. At Master level, the motivation letter is the only document where you speak directly to the admissions committee — and it is decisive.
How the EPFL Application Works — IS-Academia, No Common App
EPFL uses its own direct online application system called IS-Academia. There is no Common App, no UCAS, no coalition portal. All applicants deal directly with EPFL. The written requirements differ completely between Bachelor and Master levels.
A professional academic letter covering your background, research interests, and reasons for choosing this specific EPFL programme. Not a personal statement — a focused, research-professional document.
Bachelor applications require only academic documents: diploma, transcript, language certificate, and passport copy. Selection is entirely grades-based.
Tick the Excellence Fellowship box in IS-Academia when submitting your Master application. No separate written statement is required — the admissions committee assesses top applicants automatically.
Written Requirements by Application Level
The following reflects EPFL's published application requirements. There are no set essay prompts — the motivation letter at Master level is a free-form professional document guided by your own content choices.
Bachelor Application — No Written Statement
Bachelor applications at EPFL require no personal statement, motivation letter, or essay of any kind. Admission is based solely on secondary school qualification category, grades, and language certification.
Channel all effort toward academic performance and language preparation. A student targeting EPFL's Bachelor should be focused on IB HL Mathematics (AA), physics, and French fluency — not on writing a personal statement. There is nothing to write.
Master Application — Motivation Letter (Free Form)
A motivation letter is required for all Master applications at EPFL. No specific prompt is given — the letter is a professional academic statement of purpose covering your background, interests, and reasons for choosing this programme and institution.
Write a specific, research-focused document. Identify one or two EPFL professors or research groups whose work aligns with yours, read their recent publications, and reference them meaningfully. Describe your undergraduate thesis or final-year project with concrete detail. Keep the letter to 1–2 pages — this is not a personal statement; exceeding two pages signals unfamiliarity with professional academic writing norms.
PhD Application — Research Proposal + Supervisor Contact
PhD applications at EPFL are decentralised by research group. Most supervisors expect direct contact before a formal application is submitted. A research proposal describing your intended project, methods, and connection to the supervisor's existing work is typically required.
For PhD applications: email a potential supervisor before applying. Read their recent publications thoroughly. Your email should reference specific papers, identify a concrete research question their work raises, and briefly describe your own background. Generic 'I am interested in your lab' emails are typically ignored. The research proposal should be 2–4 pages: context, research question, proposed methodology, and connection to the supervisor's group.
Writing Your EPFL Motivation Letter — Format, Structure, and What Works
The EPFL motivation letter is the only document in the Master application where you speak directly to the admissions committee. It is a professional, academic document — not a life story. It answers three questions: What have you studied and researched so far? What specifically do you want to study or research at EPFL and why? Why EPFL, and why this programme in particular?
Specific identification of 1–2 EPFL research groups or faculty members and genuine engagement with their work
Concrete description of your undergraduate thesis or final-year project, with results and methodology
A clear, logical research trajectory — where you've been, where you're going, and why EPFL is the next step
Evidence of relevant technical skills and academic depth in the programme's subject area
Generic enthusiasm for EPFL's rankings or 'exciting research opportunities' without specifics
Life-story personal statements that recount childhood interests rather than academic work
Letters that could have been sent to any top university — no EPFL-specific content
Exceeding two pages with filler — EPFL reviewers value concision
The motivation letter must demonstrate that you have genuinely engaged with EPFL's research agenda — not just its reputation. Read at least two recent papers from the research group you are interested in, and reference them with specific intellectual engagement. The admissions committee can immediately distinguish applicants who have done their homework from those who have not.
The Three-Part Motivation Letter Structure — What Each Section Must Accomplish
The most effective EPFL motivation letters follow a clear three-part structure. Each section has a distinct purpose — and failing to deliver on any one of them weakens the overall letter significantly.
Describe your undergraduate degree, your strongest areas of academic achievement, and your thesis or final-year project. Be specific — not 'I studied computer science' but 'My Bachelor thesis on distributed graph algorithms under Professor X used a novel approach to...'.
This section establishes your credibility. Specific thesis title, methodology, results, and any publications or presentations. Mention specific modules that are directly relevant to the EPFL programme you are applying to. Do not narrate your entire educational history — focus on the work most relevant to your EPFL application.
Research Interests and EPFL-Specific Goals
Explain what you want to work on at EPFL. Name specific faculty members or research groups. Explain how your interests connect to their current research agenda. This is where most unsuccessful applications fail.
This is the highest-impact section. Browse EPFL lab websites and read recent publications from 1–2 relevant professors before writing this section. Reference specific papers or research directions by name. Show that you understand what EPFL's researchers are working on — not what they worked on five years ago. Vague statements about 'exciting opportunities' demonstrate the opposite of research literacy.
Explain specifically what EPFL's programme offers that alternatives do not. Reference specific courses, research centres, labs, collaborative industry partners, or programme structure features.
Generic praise is counterproductive. Do not mention rankings. Instead: 'EPFL's IC School is uniquely positioned in the intersection of X and Y through [specific lab/project]. The collaboration with [specific industry partner or institute] provides [specific opportunity] that I cannot find at comparable institutions.' Thirty words of specific reason outweigh three hundred words of general praise.
Positioning Yourself for EPFL Master Admissions — Strategic Considerations
EPFL Master admissions are competitive and globally sourced. The following strategic considerations go beyond the baseline document requirements.
EPFL is a research university. Even for coursework-heavy Master programmes, demonstrating familiarity with EPFL's research agenda signals the intellectual seriousness the institution values. Browse lab websites, read recent publications, and identify 1–2 faculty members before writing your motivation letter.
An EPFL admissions committee would rather see a student who has published one paper, led one substantial project, or conducted one rigorous thesis than a student who lists 15 surface-level activities. Go deep, not wide. Extracurricular activities carry no weight — research depth does.
Choose the Right EPFL Programme for Your Specialisation
EPFL's Master programmes are specific and differentiated. Computer Science, Computational Science and Engineering, Data Science, and Communication Systems are distinct programmes with different admission profiles and research cultures. Apply to the programme that matches your genuine expertise — mismatches between a candidate's background and their stated programme are obvious to reviewers.
Invest in Your Reference Letters During Your Undergraduate Years
Two strong academic references are required. A generic letter from a professor who barely knows your work is significantly worse than a strong, specific letter from a less-famous professor who supervised your thesis. Invest in research relationships during your undergraduate years — ask for reference letters from supervisors who can speak to your work in concrete, specific terms.
Application Pitfalls to Avoid — Bachelor and Master
Writing a Bachelor-style personal essay for a Master motivation letter — the motivation letter is a research-professional document, not a life story
Being vague about research interests: 'I am interested in machine learning' is insufficient; 'I am interested in federated learning for privacy-preserving medical imaging, particularly the work from Professor X's lab at EPFL' is
Applying without verifying diploma category on swissuniversities.ch — students who discover they need the entrance exam after the April deadline have missed their window
Submitting language certification that does not meet EPFL's minimums and assuming an exemption will be granted
Assuming EPFL interviews all Master applicants — most programmes do not; your written application is your only impression
Starting housing applications late — FMEL waitlists of 6–18 months mean you must apply the day you have any acceptance signal
Listing extracurricular activities or community service in a Master motivation letter — EPFL does not evaluate these at admission; use your two pages for academic and research substance
For Bachelor applicants: not having genuine French fluency before arriving — a DELF B2 certificate obtained by intensive cramming does not prepare you for full-immersion technical French instruction
Frequently Asked Questions About the EPFL Application Process
Does EPFL require a personal statement for Bachelor admission?
No. There is no personal statement, motivation letter, or essay of any kind required for Bachelor admission. EPFL selects Bachelor students purely on secondary school academic qualifications, grades, and language certification.
How long should the Master motivation letter be?
One to two pages. This is a standard professional academic letter — not a US personal statement. Keep it concise, specific, and research-focused. EPFL does not specify a word count but two pages is the widely understood upper limit. Most strong letters are 1.5 pages.
Can I contact an EPFL professor before applying?
Yes — and for PhD admissions this is standard practice. For Master admissions, contacting a professor whose lab you are interested in joining can be valuable context, but only reach out if you have a specific, substantive question about their research that cannot be answered from their lab website. Generic 'I am applying to your programme' emails are not well received.
Is there an interview for Master admission?
Most EPFL Master programmes do not conduct interviews. A small number of specialised programmes (notably Computational Neuroscience and Quantitative Finance) may interview shortlisted candidates. Check your specific programme's admissions page to confirm.
What language should the motivation letter be in?
For programmes taught in English, write in English. For any French-medium programmes, write in French. EPFL accepts motivation letters in its four official working languages (English, French, German, Italian). When in doubt, write in the language of instruction for your chosen programme.
I am applying to Computer Science. How competitive is it?
Computer Science is one of EPFL's most competitive Master programmes, receiving a large and highly qualified international applicant pool. A high GPA from a recognised institution, demonstrable programming and theoretical CS ability (including algorithms, systems, or ML depending on your track), research experience, and a highly specific motivation letter referencing EPFL's IC School research groups are all expected of successful applicants.
Are there any application essays for scholarships?
The Excellence Fellowship requires no separate essay — it is assessed alongside your regular programme application based on your academic profile and motivation letter. Post-enrolment scholarships (Hans Wilsdorf, Charles Rapin) use a simple unified application form with a brief statement. There are no lengthy scholarship essays at EPFL.
Is the motivation letter reviewed by faculty or by an admissions office?
At EPFL, programme admissions committees typically include faculty members from the relevant school. For research-intensive Master programmes (Robotics, Computational Science, Life Sciences), faculty often play a direct role in shortlisting. This is one reason why demonstrating genuine engagement with specific EPFL research — rather than generic interest in the institution — is so important.
