POSTECH — Pohang University of Science and Technology — is South Korea's most concentrated research university: fewer than 3,400 students, a 6:1 student-to-faculty ratio, and on-campus access to one of the world's most powerful synchrotron light sources. If you are an international student driven by pure science or engineering research, there is no equivalent in Asia at this scale of intensity. This guide walks you through every step of the international admissions journey.

POSTECH was designed explicitly after Caltech: a small, elite science and engineering university where undergraduates work directly alongside researchers. The student population is intentionally kept below 3,500 to preserve research intimacy.

POSTECH operates the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL), home to both a 3rd-generation synchrotron (PLS-II) and a 4th-generation X-ray free electron laser (PAL-XFEL) — one of only three in the world. Undergraduates gain access to these facilities from their first year.

All admitted international undergraduate students receive a full tuition scholarship for the standard 8 semesters of their programme. Tuition at POSTECH is effectively zero for eligible international admits — a rare financial advantage among elite global universities.

POSTECH ranks 98th globally (QS) and 163rd (Times Higher Education), holding the 5th position nationally in South Korea — ahead of institutions with fifty times its enrolment. It is consistently ranked among the world's best young universities.

Founded in 1986 and modelled on Caltech, POSTECH was built from day one as a research-first institution. It is South Korea's most selective science and engineering university and one of the few elite global institutions where international students pay no tuition. For ambitious students who want to do real science from Year 1, POSTECH is a singular opportunity.

Overall acceptance rate — international track is highly selective within a very small cohort

Strong performance in mathematics and sciences is scrutinised most closely

IB score of 40+ is the competitive benchmark

Course rigour in STEM subjects matters as much as overall grade

POSTECH requires a minimum GPA of 3.5/4.0 for international applicants. Competitive admits consistently score in the top tier of their graduating class, with emphasis on mathematics and science subjects. IB students targeting admission typically achieve 40 points or above.

Native English speakers or English-medium school graduates may request waiver

English proficiency is a hard requirement — not a holistic factor. Scores must be recent (typically within 2 years). To participate fully in POSTECH's research environment, scores well above the minimum (IELTS 7.0+, TOEFL 95+) are strongly advised.

Science olympiad medals (IPhO, IChO, IMO, IOI) are significant positives

Independent lab work, research internships, or published findings

Coding projects, science fair achievements, or independent study

POSTECH wants future researchers, not just top students

For international applicants, demonstrated research curiosity is a key differentiator. POSTECH's admissions reviewers look for evidence of independent inquiry beyond coursework — competitions, self-directed projects, or lab experience. The Study Plan must articulate specific research interests connected to POSTECH's actual departments and facilities.

POSTECH Application Components — Study Plan, Transcripts & Recommendations

Online Application (POSTECH Portal / Study in Korea)

Applications are submitted through POSTECH's international admissions portal at adm-iu.postech.ac.kr or the Study in Korea central platform (studyinkorea.go.kr). The portal opens on a seasonal cycle — confirm exact dates for your target intake.

Official records from all secondary schools attended, covering the last three years minimum. Grades in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and science subjects are scrutinised most closely. Certified translations are required for documents not originally in English or Korean.

Proof of Graduation / Expected Graduation

An official document confirming completion of secondary education or expected completion date. For IB students, the Predicted Grades certificate and full IB transcript are required. Documents may need apostille or notarisation depending on your country.

IELTS (minimum 6.5), TOEFL iBT (minimum 80), or Duolingo English Test (minimum 130). Scores must be from officially recognised test providers and recent (typically within 2 years). Native speakers from English-medium schools may request a waiver.

POSTECH's Study Plan is part personal statement, part research proposal, and part statement of purpose. It must articulate your academic background, research interests, reason for choosing POSTECH specifically, and future plans. This is the single most important document in your application.

Typically two letters from science or mathematics teachers who can speak directly to your academic capability and research potential. A letter from a research supervisor or university professor who has worked with you directly is the most powerful addition available to international applicants.

POSTECH operates a test-optional policy. SAT, ACT, or equivalent scores may be submitted but are not required. Strong IB or A-Level results typically carry more weight in international review than standardised tests.

POSTECH does not use the Common App, UCAS, or any US/UK admissions framework. Applications are submitted directly through POSTECH's own portal or the Study in Korea platform. The process is document-centred: your transcript, Study Plan, and recommendations are your entire application — there are no supplemental essays or activity lists.

https://adm-iu.postech.ac.kr/user/admission/guide/international.do

The Study Plan is not a personal narrative — it is a research argument

POSTECH is not looking for an emotional story about overcoming adversity. It wants to see that you understand what frontier science looks like, have engaged with it at some level, and have a coherent plan to go further. Lead with intellectual content, not personal drama.

Name specific labs, faculty, and facilities

Mentioning POSTECH's Pohang Accelerator Laboratory, the IBS (Institute for Basic Science) affiliation, or a specific department's research group is far more compelling than praising POSTECH's 'global reputation.' Admissions reviewers can tell who has done their research.

The Study Plan must show a logical line: here is what I have done — here is what POSTECH offers that I cannot get elsewhere — here is what I will build from that. Make the argument explicit, not implied.

Be specific about your research direction

A focused interest ('I want to study computational materials science to develop next-generation battery electrolytes') is infinitely more compelling than 'I am passionate about science and technology.' Reviewers remember applications that name a problem, not ones that name a feeling.

POSTECH Study Plan — Writing the Perfect Application Statement

Describe your academic background in your chosen field of study, including relevant coursework, competitions, projects, and independent research. Be specific about what you have done and what it revealed to you about the field.

Describe the research area or problem you hope to explore at POSTECH. Explain why this problem matters to you and how POSTECH's specific strengths, facilities, or faculty relate to your interest.

Why POSTECH specifically? Name the departments, research centres, or facilities that are directly relevant to your goals, and explain why POSTECH — rather than another institution — is the right environment for your development.

Where do you see your academic and professional journey going after POSTECH? How does this degree fit into your longer-term plans as a scientist or engineer?

Writing a Study Plan that could apply to any science university — generic praise for research without naming POSTECH's specific labs, faculty, or facilities.

The most common POSTECH application mistake

What POSTECH Admissions Reviewers Are Looking For

Strong performance in the most advanced mathematics available — IB HL Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches, A-Level Further Mathematics, or equivalent. Calculus and linear algebra readiness is assumed from Day 1 of lectures. This is the single most important academic signal for almost every POSTECH department.

POSTECH values depth over breadth. A student with outstanding physics and chemistry, combined with genuine lab or competition experience, is a stronger candidate than one with uniformly good grades across many subjects. Pick your science and go deep.

Evidence of independent inquiry — science olympiad medals, lab internships, self-directed experiments, competitive programming achievements, or published findings — is the key differentiator for international applicants. Admissions reviewers are reading for a future researcher, not a passive student.

Your Study Plan must demonstrate that you know what POSTECH is, what makes it different from other options, and why you specifically need to be here. Generic enthusiasm for science is not enough. The admissions committee reads dozens of applications claiming passion for research — only specific, evidence-backed statements stand out.

Life in Pohang is different from a major international city. The campus is self-contained and the culture intensely focused. Students who succeed at POSTECH are motivated by the work itself. Admissions reviewers look for signs of this self-directedness — in competitions, independent projects, and the honesty of your Study Plan.

English Language Capability Above the Minimum

The IELTS and TOEFL minimums are eligibility floors. To engage fully with POSTECH's research environment — reading papers, writing lab reports, collaborating with international researchers — you need English proficiency well above 6.5 or 80. Scores near the minimum are not a competitive advantage.

POSTECH does not admit generalists. It admits future scientists and engineers. The evaluation is document-based and holistic within a STEM frame: reviewers assess academic preparation, research potential, and whether the applicant has a compelling reason to be at POSTECH specifically — not just at a good university.

POSTECH Financial Aid & Scholarships for International Students

Cost estimates are based on POSTECH's published figures. Living costs are denominated in Korean won and may vary with exchange rates. Individual scholarship eligibility may vary.

POSTECH's international undergraduate financial model is built around the full tuition scholarship — all admitted students receive it, regardless of family income or nationality. There is no income test and no application required beyond the admissions process itself. The cost you need to plan for is living expenses in Pohang — one of the most affordable cities in South Korea.

POSTECH's financial model for international undergraduates is straightforward and unusually generous: admission equals a full tuition scholarship for all 8 semesters of the standard programme. Beyond tuition, additional institutional support and external scholarship programmes can further reduce the cost of attendance. The result is that POSTECH is one of the most affordable elite institutions in the world for international students.

Spring Intake Application Period (prior year)

Fall intake is the main round — most international students begin in September

Spring intake (March start) is available for eligible programmes

Applications assessed on rolling basis — earlier submission can be beneficial

No binding 'early decision' restriction — you may apply elsewhere simultaneously

Application portal opens seasonally — confirm exact dates each cycle

POSTECH does not offer an Early Action or Early Decision advantage over a regular applicant

Spring intake has a smaller cohort and fewer available departmental places

Application deadlines may differ between POSTECH's portal and the Study in Korea platform

Visa processing timelines must be factored into your decision on which intake to target

Some departments or scholarships may only accept fall intake applications — verify before applying

POSTECH Application Rounds — Spring vs Fall Intake Strategy

Unlike US universities with Early Action and Regular Decision distinctions, POSTECH offers two intakes per year. The fall intake (September start) is the primary round for international students. The spring intake (March start) is secondary. POSTECH does not have an ED/EA binding-commitment advantage — both rounds are assessed similarly.

Apply to the Fall intake (September start) unless you have a compelling reason to enter in Spring. The Fall intake has more departmental places, a larger incoming international cohort, and is the standard track for scholarship programmes including the Global Korea Scholarship. Confirm exact deadlines each cycle at adm-iu.postech.ac.kr, as these change annually.

Document-based review; no formal interview for most international applicants

Academic transcripts, Study Plan, recommendations, and English proficiency

Some specific programmes or circumstances may require additional assessment — confirm with admissions

POSTECH Interview — Format and What to Expect

Your Study Plan substitutes for the interview conversation. It must articulate the same things a good interview would reveal: intellectual depth, research direction, and genuine motivation for POSTECH.

How does POSTECH evaluate applicants without an interview?

Name specific faculty, research centres, or facilities — the same level of specificity an interviewer would probe for in conversation.

What should my Study Plan convey instead of an interview?

If POSTECH contacts you for additional information or a video interview for a specific programme, respond promptly and treat it with the same seriousness as a formal admissions interview.

What if I am contacted for additional assessment?

Your recommenders speak for you in the admissions committee. Choose teachers or mentors who can describe specific evidence of your research curiosity and mathematical ability.

How do recommendation letters compensate for the lack of interview?

Some graduate programmes at POSTECH conduct interviews; international undergraduate admissions is generally document-based. Verify the current process at postech-iuadmission@postech.ac.kr.

Is there any chance of an interview being required?

POSTECH's standard international undergraduate admissions process is document-based — there is no formal interview stage for most applicants, unlike Oxbridge or some US university processes. Your entire case is made through the Study Plan, transcripts, English proficiency scores, and recommendation letters. This makes every document more important, not less. The Study Plan is effectively your interview in written form.

Housing and community facilities for international students and researchers

Separate residential facilities for graduate students and research staff

POSTECH Residential Life & Campus Community

POSTECH does not operate a Harvard-style residential house system with distinct cultures and dining halls. Instead, all undergraduates live in on-campus dormitories, keeping the academic community tightly integrated. The POSCO International Center provides dedicated housing and community facilities for international students and researchers.

All admitted international undergraduates are eligible for on-campus dormitory housing

Housing applications are managed through POSTECH's student affairs office upon admission

The POSCO International Center provides orientation, Korean language courses, counselling, and cultural programming for international students

On-campus dormitory housing reduces commute and makes interdisciplinary collaboration natural

Pohang's lower cost of living means even off-campus housing is affordable by global standards

The employment rate of 95% reflects the strength of industry demand for POSTECH graduates. For students aiming at graduate research, the POSTECH credential is globally recognised at the doctoral admissions level.

Our POSTECH & South Korea Admissions Track Record

I applied to POSTECH with a strong IB score but a generic Study Plan that could have been sent to any university. Tychr helped me rewrite it entirely around POSTECH's Materials Science department and the PAL-XFEL facility. The specificity was the difference — I received an offer and the full tuition scholarship.

POSTECH — Materials Science & Engineering

Tychr was clear that POSTECH's Study Plan is not a personal statement in the UK sense. Learning to write a research-focused document — naming the lab groups I wanted to work with and the specific problems I cared about — was a skill I did not have before working with my Tychr counsellor.

The Global Korea Scholarship was a piece of the puzzle I would have missed without Tychr's guidance. Combined with POSTECH's tuition scholarship, my total annual cost of studying at a QS Top 100 university was dramatically lower than any European alternative I was considering.

Many courses at the undergraduate level are offered in English, particularly in science and engineering disciplines. However, some lectures — especially introductory and humanities courses — may be conducted in Korean. The medium of instruction depends on the department and individual professor. Confirm current English-medium offerings directly with POSTECH before applying.

Is POSTECH tuition-free for all international students?

Yes — all admitted international undergraduate students receive a full tuition scholarship covering all 8 semesters of the standard programme, provided they maintain the required academic standing. This is not income-tested; it is awarded automatically upon admission through the international track.

Can I apply to POSTECH with IB qualifications?

Yes. International Baccalaureate results are accepted. The benchmark for competitive admission is an IB score of 40 or above, with strong Higher Level results in mathematics and at least one science subject. HL Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches (or Applications & Interpretation) combined with HL Physics, Chemistry, or Biology is the expected profile for most departments.

No. POSTECH's test policy is optional for standardised tests. SAT or ACT scores may be submitted if you believe they strengthen your application, but they are not required. Your academic transcript and English proficiency score carry more weight.

How does POSTECH compare to KAIST and Seoul National University for internationals?

POSTECH, KAIST, and SNU are all elite South Korean institutions. POSTECH is the smallest and most research-intensive. Its 6:1 student-to-faculty ratio and access to PAL (the synchrotron laboratory) make it the strongest choice for students whose goal is deep research engagement from undergraduate level. KAIST has a slightly larger campus with more programme diversity. SNU offers the broadest range of disciplines and a large city campus. If you want a research-centric STEM environment from Day 1, POSTECH is the right choice.

Korean language skills are not required for admission, but learning Korean will significantly enhance your experience in Pohang, a city with limited English-language infrastructure compared to Seoul. POSTECH provides Korean language courses for international students through ISSS and its King Sejong Institute partnership.

What is the approximate annual cost for an international undergraduate?

With the full tuition scholarship, your primary annual costs are living expenses — estimated at approximately $8,000–$10,000 USD per year in Pohang. This covers dormitory housing, food, transport, and personal expenses. Pohang is significantly more affordable than Seoul.

Is POSTECH only for science and engineering students?

Effectively yes. POSTECH's entire undergraduate curriculum is built around STEM disciplines. There is a Division of Humanities and Social Sciences providing foundational liberal arts courses, but it does not offer an independent degree programme. All undergraduate majors are science or engineering disciplines.

Getting into POSTECH is not about having the best grades — it is about proving you are a future researcher who belongs in the world's most research-intensive undergraduate environment.

POSTECH Academic Requirements — The Honest Breakdown for International Students

What grades, test scores, and academic profile do POSTECH's admitted international students actually have? What does a research-first admissions process mean for students from IB, A-Level, AP, and other international curricula?

POSTECH states a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale for international undergraduate applicants. In practice, the admitted international cohort reflects students at the top of their graduating class in mathematics and science subjects. The minimum is an eligibility floor, not the competitive target.

Stated minimum GPA for international applicants

IB competitive benchmark (typical admitted score)

POSTECH GPA Requirements — What the Admitted Profile Actually Shows

A 3.5 GPA is an eligibility floor, not a differentiator. The students who receive POSTECH's full tuition scholarship offer are typically in the top 5–10% of their secondary school cohort, with outstanding performance specifically in mathematics and science courses.

International students from systems without formal GPA scales — IB, UK A-Levels, French Baccalaureate, Indian CBSE/ISC — are evaluated on their grades relative to their system's norms. An IB score of 40 or above is the stated competitive benchmark. A-Level applicants should hold or be predicted A*AA minimum with A* in Mathematics.

What this means for international applicants

For international applicants whose early secondary school record was not outstanding, an upward trajectory — strong Year 11 and Year 12 results combined with evidence of independent research or competition achievement — is meaningful context. POSTECH's admissions process looks at the whole picture, not just a single number.

https://adm-iu.postech.ac.kr/user/admission/guide/international.do

POSTECH's international admissions office evaluates academic performance across a wide range of school systems. Unlike many South Korean universities primarily oriented toward domestic CSAT applicants, POSTECH's international track has experience assessing IB, A-Level, AP, and other national credentials.

Every application is evaluated in the context of the school system and curriculum available to the applicant. A student attending a school that offers IB HL Mathematics is expected to take it if targeting POSTECH's engineering or physics departments. A student from a system without that option is evaluated on the highest available equivalent and their performance within it.

How POSTECH contextualises your academic record

Taking the most rigorous courses available at your school — not just the courses where you can achieve the highest grades — is a stronger signal than grade-optimised choices in easier subjects. POSTECH's admissions reviewers are experienced scientists and engineers; they understand the difference between a rigorous and a comfortable curriculum.

How POSTECH Reads Academic Performance Across Different School Systems

For students at schools where advanced STEM courses are limited, your Study Plan and letters of recommendation become even more important as contextual evidence. Explaining what you did with the available resources — self-study, online courses, lab work, competitions — is a legitimate and respected approach.

For students at schools with limited STEM resources

POSTECH operates a test-optional policy and does not publish SAT score bands for admitted students. There is no minimum SAT score requirement. If submitting, aim for scores that are clearly competitive at a QS Top 100 institution.

SAT Scores at POSTECH — Whether and How to Submit

For a science and engineering university, the SAT Math subscore carries more informational value than the overall composite. If your Math score is strong (700+) but your Evidence-Based Reading score is lower, the Math section alone may still be a useful signal for POSTECH's STEM-focused reviewers.

Given that POSTECH does not require SAT scores and relies primarily on IB/A-Level results and the Study Plan, significant SAT preparation time is generally better invested in strengthening your transcript or researching POSTECH's faculty and facilities for your Study Plan.

If your SAT score is 1400 or above, submit it — it adds positive context without risk. If your score is below 1350, omitting it and letting your IB/A-Level results and Study Plan carry the academic argument is the stronger strategy. Do not submit a score that would weaken an otherwise strong academic profile.

POSTECH accepts ACT scores as optional supporting evidence. No minimum is published. As with the SAT, the decision to submit depends on whether your score strengthens your overall academic profile.

ACT Scores at POSTECH — The Data and the Strategy

POSTECH does not publish a superscore policy for standardised tests. If submitting ACT scores, submit your best sitting. As test scores are supplementary rather than central for POSTECH's international review, the administrative details of superscore policy are less strategically significant than at US universities.

POSTECH accepts both. Neither is required. Choose based on your strengths — or submit neither and let your IB/A-Level results speak.

For a science institution, the ACT Science section's data interpretation format is more directly relevant than any SAT section. A strong Science subscore (33+) is a meaningful signal.

IB HL results and A-Level grades carry significantly more weight than standardised tests for POSTECH's international reviewers. Invest preparation time accordingly.

For most international IB or A-Level students, standardised tests are not the primary focus of POSTECH application preparation. If you sit the ACT and score 32 or above, submit the score. If not, direct your effort toward perfecting your Study Plan and deepening your research experience — these are the factors that differentiate admitted students.

POSTECH maintains a test-optional policy for international undergraduate applicants. SAT and ACT scores are accepted but not required. Understanding when submitting or withholding scores is the better strategy is an important application decision.

POSTECH's Test-Optional Policy — The Strategic Decision Explained

POSTECH accepts applications without standardised test scores and evaluates all files on a holistic document basis. The academic evidence that carries the most weight is your secondary school transcript (particularly in mathematics and science subjects), your English proficiency test score, and your Study Plan.

Your SAT is at or above 1400, particularly with a strong Math subscore — submit.

Your ACT is at or above 32 — submit, especially if the Science section is strong.

You are not from an IB or A-Level system and your standardised test is the clearest indicator of STEM aptitude — submit.

Your SAT is below 1350 or ACT below 30 — withhold and let your transcript carry the academic argument.

You have strong IB or A-Level results — these are more meaningful to POSTECH's reviewers than standardised tests.

Submitting would draw attention to a dimension of your profile that is weaker than the rest.

Test-optional does not mean test-irrelevant. If you submit a strong score, it adds a positive signal. If you don't submit, the academic weight falls entirely on your transcript and Study Plan. For most international students at POSTECH, this is fine — IB and A-Level results are well-understood and respected by the admissions committee. The Study Plan is where the real differentiation happens.

What test-optional really means at POSTECH

https://adm-iu.postech.ac.kr/user/admission/guide/international.do

IB is the most common international curriculum among POSTECH international applicants. The committee understands IB grading norms, Extended Essay conventions, and the difference between AA and AI mathematics tracks. Choose HL Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches if you are targeting engineering, physics, mathematics, or computer science. A 7 in HL Mathematics is the most powerful single signal for POSTECH's mathematical rigour expectations.

7 in HL Mathematics (AA preferred), 6+ in relevant science HL

HL Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches strongly preferred over Applications & Interpretation

A or B grade in a science or mathematics EE adds positive research signal

A-Level applicants are well-understood by POSTECH's admissions reviewers. Predicted grades carry significant weight — a school's track record of accurate predictions affects how predicted grades are read. Strong GCSE/IGCSE results supporting predicted A-Level grades strengthen the academic profile.

A*AA minimum, A*A*A for the most competitive departments

Strongly recommended for Physics, Engineering, Mathematics applicants; effectively expected in competitive years

A grades in Physics and/or Chemistry supporting the primary field

IB and A-Level Results at POSTECH — Specific Benchmarks

https://adm-iu.postech.ac.kr/user/admission/guide/international.do

Advanced Placement courses and exams are not a standard part of POSTECH's international admissions landscape — most of POSTECH's international applicants come from IB, A-Level, or other national curriculum backgrounds. AP scores, where submitted, are read as supplementary evidence of academic capability.

AP Calculus BC (5), AP Physics C: Mechanics and Electricity & Magnetism (5), AP Chemistry (5), AP Computer Science A (5). These directly signal the STEM depth POSTECH expects. AP scores in humanities subjects are less relevant to POSTECH's science-focused review.

POSTECH does not specify an expected number or threshold for AP exams. If you are in an AP-based curriculum, five or more AP exams in core science and mathematics subjects, with scores of 4 or 5, represent a competitive academic profile.

For US-curriculum students applying to POSTECH, AP scores serve the same function that IB HL grades do for IB students — they validate the academic claim of your transcript. Consistent 5s in rigorous STEM subjects are a meaningful signal.

Advanced Placement (For US Curriculum Applicants)

AP Courses and POSTECH — What Counts for US-Curriculum Applicants

POSTECH may grant course credit or course waivers for AP scores in relevant subjects, potentially allowing students to skip introductory-level courses. Confirm the credit policy for your specific major with the department before arriving.

IB and A-Level students should not pursue AP courses artificially. Your IB Diploma or A-Level results are the appropriate and well-understood credential for POSTECH's international admissions reviewers. AP is evaluated for what it is — strong additional evidence in a US-curriculum context, not a requirement.

For POSTECH, the rigour of your secondary school record is evaluated almost entirely through the lens of mathematics and science: how advanced was your mathematics? How deeply did you engage with physics, chemistry, or computer science? How much of what you know about science came from going beyond what your school assigned?

Secondary School Rigour — POSTECH's Primary Academic Criterion

Taking the most advanced mathematics available to you and demonstrating depth in at least one science discipline — then going beyond both through competitions, research, or independent study.

Rigour is always evaluated relative to what was available. A student at a school that offers only limited science courses is evaluated differently from one at a school with full IB HL science access. What matters is whether the student challenged themselves relative to what was possible — and then sought more beyond it.

POSTECH's undergraduate curriculum opens with university-level mathematics, physics, and chemistry from Week 1. The academic rigour criterion is essentially asking: will this student be ready to engage with that material from the first day? Evidence that you are comes from your course choices, grades, and — critically — what you pursued independently.

What rigour means at a research-first university

A student who took IB HL Mathematics AA, HL Physics, and HL Chemistry simultaneously — and then entered national science olympiad competition or conducted independent research — demonstrates the academic courage and initiative that POSTECH's rigour criterion rewards. This is a more compelling profile than perfect grades in a less demanding curriculum.

POSTECH's entire undergraduate curriculum is built on the assumption that students arrive with strong mathematical and scientific preparation. Unlike many universities where introductory courses scaffold from basic principles, POSTECH's first-year programme moves quickly and assumes readiness. Subject preparation before arrival is not optional — it is essential.

Mathematics and Science Preparation — What POSTECH Expects from Day 1

Take the most advanced mathematics available to you — IB HL Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches, A-Level Further Mathematics, or equivalent. Calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations appear in the first semester of almost every POSTECH programme. Students who arrive without calculus readiness struggle from the beginning. Olympiad mathematics (AMC/AIME/IMO or national equivalents) is a meaningful additional signal.

IB HL Physics or A-Level Physics is expected for Engineering and Physics applicants. Familiarity with mechanics, electricity, waves, and thermodynamics is assumed. For Materials Science, Chemistry, and Life Sciences applicants, HL or A-Level Chemistry should be part of your profile. Even Computer Science students benefit from understanding the physical principles underlying semiconductor devices.

While not a formal entry requirement for any department, programming experience (Python, C/C++) is a practical advantage from Day 1 across almost all POSTECH departments. CS&E students benefit most, but data-driven research across materials science, chemistry, and biology increasingly requires coding capability. Most admitted students arrive with some programming background.

Academic English — reading scientific papers, writing lab reports, engaging in research discussions — is the medium of POSTECH's research environment. The IELTS and TOEFL minimums are eligibility floors. Students targeting active participation in lab research should aim for IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 95+ as a practical target, not just the stated minimum.

English language proficiency is a hard admissions requirement at POSTECH — it is not factored holistically against academic strength. All international undergraduate applicants must submit an approved English proficiency score unless eligible for a waiver. Scores must typically be within 2 years of application.

English Language Requirements for International POSTECH Applicants

The IELTS 6.5 and TOEFL 80 minimums represent the eligibility floor, not the competitive standard. POSTECH's research environment requires you to read technical papers, write lab reports, present findings, and collaborate with international researchers — all in English. Students who score at the minimum will find the academic environment challenging.

Tychr recommends targeting IELTS 7.0+ or TOEFL 95+ before applying to POSTECH. This gives you a buffer above the minimum and signals language confidence to the admissions committee. If you are from an English-medium secondary school or a country where English is an official language, contact postech-iuadmission@postech.ac.kr to ask about the waiver process before sitting the test.

Practical guidance for POSTECH applicants

https://adm-iu.postech.ac.kr/user/admission/guide/international.do

POSTECH expects students to identify a target department at the time of application. Your Study Plan will be reviewed by faculty in that department, so your academic profile must be coherent with your stated choice. Switching departments after admission is possible but not straightforward.

Math olympiad (IMO/national); proof-based thinking

USACO/IOI; coding projects; algorithm competition

IPhO / physics olympiad; PAL-XFEL interest

How POSTECH Reads Different International Curricula

POSTECH's international admissions office evaluates a diverse range of curricula from applicants worldwide. Understanding how your specific curriculum is read helps you present it most effectively.

The most common international curriculum among POSTECH international applicants. Well-understood and respected. Key factors: total score (40+ benchmark), HL subject configuration (especially Mathematics and science HLs), and Extended Essay grade. A 7 in HL Mathematics AA is the strongest single academic signal.

Respected and well-known to POSTECH admissions. Strong predicted grades with A* in Mathematics and supporting science subjects. GCSE/IGCSE results provide context for predicted grades. Further Mathematics is a strong differentiator for STEM applicants.

Indian board results are evaluated relative to national context. Top-stream CBSE/ISC results with 95%+ in Mathematics and sciences are competitive. Science olympiad selection (INPHO, INCHO, INMO) or Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) scholarships are highly meaningful additional evidence.

Chinese high school transcripts are evaluated in context. Top performance in mathematics and science, combined with competition achievements or research experience, is the expected profile. CMO/CNPhO/CNChO competition results are significant positives.

French Baccalaureate, German Abitur, AP-based US curricula, and other national credentials are all accepted. POSTECH evaluates them relative to their national context. Contact postech-iuadmission@postech.ac.kr to confirm your credential's recognition before applying.

Building a POSTECH-Competitive Academic Profile

Grade 9–10: Identify Your Science Identity

Choose a science or mathematics area you genuinely love. Begin taking the highest-level courses your school offers. Explore science olympiads, coding clubs, or local science fairs to develop applied skills alongside theory. Avoid spreading yourself too thin — POSTECH rewards depth, not breadth.

Find a lab attachment, research programme, or independent project. If your school has no programme, reach out to university labs, professors, or research internship programmes in your region. A research supervisor's letter is the most powerful recommendation you can secure for a POSTECH application.

Grade 11: Compete Nationally in Your Field

Enter national or international olympiad competitions: IPhO (Physics), IChO (Chemistry), IMO (Mathematics), IOI (Informatics). These are not required, but strong placements are genuinely significant in POSTECH's international admissions context. Even regional selections carry weight if stated clearly.

Grade 11–12: English Proficiency Certification

Sit IELTS or TOEFL in Grade 11 or early Grade 12. Aim for IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 95+ — comfortably above the minimum — giving yourself time to resit if needed. Do not leave this to the last moment.

Grade 12: Draft and Refine the Study Plan

Draft your Study Plan with specificity: why POSTECH's research in your target field, which research centre or faculty member interests you, and what you hope to contribute. Research the actual POSTECH departments and faculty before writing. Generic statements are the most common weakness in international applications.

Academic Mistakes That Sink POSTECH International Applications

Applying with a standard IB score (36–38) and expecting the full-tuition scholarship offer to substitute for selectivity — POSTECH's academic bar is high regardless of financial incentives.

Choosing IB Mathematics: Applications & Interpretation (especially at Standard Level) when targeting engineering, physics, or mathematics programmes — A&A is effectively expected for these departments.

Submitting a Study Plan that is generic — 'I want to study science to benefit humanity' rather than naming specific POSTECH research programmes, labs, or faculty.

Not preparing to study in a research environment: if you have never engaged with science beyond the classroom, your application will struggle to stand out against applicants with olympiad medals or research experience.

Missing the English proficiency minimum and hoping the academic record compensates — proficiency is a hard requirement, not a holistic factor.

Applying with a strong record in biology alone without mathematical depth — POSTECH's curriculum requires mathematical maturity across all departments from Week 1.

Assuming Korean language is irrelevant to your POSTECH experience — life in Pohang is significantly easier with some Korean, and POSTECH provides the courses to learn it.

Underestimating the Study Plan — students who treat it as a secondary document behind the transcript consistently submit weaker applications than those who invest equal effort in both.

What Admitted International Students at POSTECH Look Like

IB 42 with 7s in HL Mathematics AA, HL Physics, and HL Chemistry. National selection for IPhO or regional prize at the national level. Study Plan focused on condensed matter physics and the PAL-XFEL facility. Research letter from a university professor who supervised a summer project.

Strong transcript with top marks in mathematics and computer science. IOI silver medal or ICPC regional finalist. Study Plan connecting algorithmic research interests to POSTECH's AI and systems research groups. Personal projects with real users or GitHub presence.

A-Level A*A*A in Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics. Independent reading in solid-state physics; summer attachment at a university materials lab. Study Plan explicitly connecting interest in battery electrolyte materials to POSTECH's Materials Science department and PAL synchrotron facilities.

These profiles are illustrative of the type of academic and research narrative that characterises competitive POSTECH international applicants. The common thread is not just grades — it is demonstrated engagement with science beyond the classroom, and a Study Plan that connects that engagement to what POSTECH specifically offers.

What is the minimum GPA to apply to POSTECH as an international student?

The stated minimum GPA for international undergraduate applicants is 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. This is an eligibility floor, not a competitive target. Admitted students are consistently at the top of their secondary school cohort in mathematics and science subjects.

The stated benchmark for competitive admission is 40 or above, with strong Higher Level results in mathematics and at least one science subject. HL Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches is strongly preferred over Applications & Interpretation for most departments.

No. POSTECH operates a test-optional policy for international applicants. Standardised test scores may be submitted as supplementary evidence but are not required. Your transcript, English proficiency score, and Study Plan carry more weight.

Do I need a maths A-Level or IB HL Maths to apply?

It depends on your target department. For Mathematics, Physics, Engineering (all types), and Computer Science departments, advanced mathematics at the HL or A-Level level is effectively required — not just recommended. For Chemistry and Life Sciences, strong mathematics alongside HL Chemistry or Biology is expected. Confirm the specific expectation for your department with POSTECH's admissions office.

How important is research experience for POSTECH admission?

Very important, particularly for international applicants. POSTECH is a research university, and the admissions process selects for research-readiness. Olympiad competition results, lab internships, independent projects, or self-directed study beyond the curriculum are all meaningful evidence. Students with no research experience face a higher burden of proof in their Study Plan.

Tuition for admitted international undergraduates

The Real Cost of POSTECH — Remarkably Affordable for International Students

POSTECH is one of the few elite global universities where all admitted international undergraduate students pay zero tuition. The challenge is gaining admission — not affording it. This section breaks down every cost dimension honestly.

https://www.postech.ac.kr/eng/admission-aid/scholarship_information.do

Estimated Annual Costs for International Undergraduates

All figures are annual estimates in USD. Tuition is covered by the full tuition scholarship for all admitted international undergraduate students. Remaining costs reflect living expenses in Pohang, South Korea — significantly lower than Seoul or other major Asian cities.

Full tuition scholarship — all 8 semesters of standard programme

Total annual estimate including all expenses, per published POSTECH figure

Housing, food, transport, personal expenses for a full academic year

International students on D-2 visa are eligible for National Health Insurance; confirm current premium with POSTECH ISSS

Budget 1–2 trips home per year; GKS scholarship covers initial airfare for eligible students

All estimates are in USD and based on POSTECH's published cost figures. Actual costs are denominated in Korean won (KRW). Build in a 10–15% buffer for exchange rate volatility over a multi-year degree. On-campus dormitory housing significantly reduces food and transport costs.

Financial Aid at POSTECH — How the System Works

POSTECH's financial aid model for international undergraduates is built around a single, automatic, and universal award: a full tuition scholarship for all admitted students in the international track. Beyond tuition, supplementary support is available through institutional and external programmes.

Percentage of international undergraduates receiving tuition scholarship

Annual tuition cost for eligible international admits

Every student admitted through the international undergraduate track receives a full tuition scholarship for 8 semesters. There is no separate application — admission itself triggers the award. Continuation requires maintaining POSTECH's stated academic standards.

For students from designated partner countries. Covers airfare, language training, tuition (5,000,000 KRW/year), and monthly living allowance. Applied for separately through NIIED / studyinkorea.go.kr. Combined with POSTECH's own tuition scholarship, GKS can cover most living expenses.

Covers full tuition, monthly living allowance, settlement allowance, and Korean language support for students from eligible nationalities. Separate application through postf.org.

https://www.postech.ac.kr/eng/admission-aid/scholarship_information.do

What POSTECH Actually Costs You — The Honest Net Price

For admitted international undergraduates, POSTECH is one of the most financially accessible elite universities in the world. The combination of a full tuition scholarship, low Pohang cost of living, and on-campus dormitory housing creates a total annual cost in the $8,000–$10,000 USD range.

Compare this with a US or UK private university at $60,000–$80,000 USD per year in total cost, or a Singapore or Hong Kong elite institution at $30,000–$50,000 USD. POSTECH's financial proposition is genuinely exceptional for its global ranking. The challenge is not affording POSTECH — it is gaining admission.

A QS Top 100 US private university costs $65,000–$80,000 USD per year in total expenses. POSTECH's total annual cost for an admitted international student — with tuition scholarship — is approximately $8,000–$10,000 USD. The financial difference over a 4-year degree is $220,000–$280,000 USD.

QS Top 100 UK universities charge international undergraduates £25,000–£45,000/year in tuition alone, plus living costs of £12,000–£20,000/year. POSTECH's total annual cost is dramatically lower, while its QS ranking is comparable to many Russell Group universities.

KAIST also offers strong scholarship coverage for international students; SNU charges a modest tuition to international students. POSTECH's full tuition scholarship makes it the most financially accessible of Korea's elite STEM institutions for international undergraduates.

Steps to Secure Financial Support at POSTECH

Apply for Admission Through the International Track

The tuition scholarship is tied to admission through the international undergraduate track — there is no separate scholarship application. Submit your application through adm-iu.postech.ac.kr or the Study in Korea platform (studyinkorea.go.kr).

If your country is among the NIIED's GKS partner nations, apply for the Global Korea Scholarship in parallel with your POSTECH application. GKS applications typically open in early spring for fall entry. Missing the GKS deadline is a common and avoidable financial loss. Check studyinkorea.go.kr for current partner countries and timelines.

Check POSCO TJ Park Foundation Eligibility

Visit postf.org and confirm whether your nationality qualifies for the POSCO Global Scholarship. This can supplement the tuition scholarship with monthly living allowance support.

Contact POSTECH International Admissions Directly

Email postech-iuadmission@postech.ac.kr to ask specifically about additional living allowances, settlement grants, work-study opportunities, and any newly available scholarship programmes for your entering cohort.

Your tuition scholarship is conditional on maintaining POSTECH's continuing academic standards. Know the GPA and academic requirements for scholarship continuation, and take them seriously from Day 1. Scholarship loss is an avoidable and financially serious risk.

https://www.postech.ac.kr/eng/admission-aid/scholarship_information.do

Financial Aid Specifically Available to International Undergraduates

POSTECH's financial aid landscape for international undergraduates is distinct from need-based models used at US universities. Aid is structured around institutional scholarships (automatic for all admits), government scholarships (nationality-dependent), and foundation awards (nationality-dependent). There is no income-tested need-based aid in the Harvard sense.

Automatic for all students admitted through the international undergraduate track. Covers 100% of tuition for 8 standard semesters. No income test, no separate application. Continuation requires meeting academic performance standards.

Global Korea Scholarship (Korean Government)

Run by NIIED under Korea's Ministry of Education. Covers airfare (both ways), 1 year of Korean language training, tuition (5,000,000 KRW/yr), settlement allowance (200,000 KRW), and monthly allowance (900,000 KRW/mo). Eligibility: citizens of designated partner countries. Highly competitive. Apply through your home country's Korean embassy or the NIIED portal.

From POSTECH's founding entity. Covers tuition, monthly living allowance, Korean language support, and a settlement grant. For eligible nationalities only. Visit postf.org for current coverage and application procedures.

Regional Government Scholarship (Gyeongsangbuk-do Province)

Gyeongsangbuk-do province, where Pohang is located, offers a scholarship programme similar to GKS. Recipients must commit to remaining in the region for 3 years post-graduation. Website: gb.go.kr

https://adm-g.postech.ac.kr/ENG/graduate-info/support-policy/

What the Typical International Student Receives

Because POSTECH's tuition is zero for all admitted international undergraduates, the 'average financial aid' question is better framed as the total annual financial advantage compared to market-rate alternatives.

Tuition scholarship value per year (at POSTECH's stated tuition rate)

Estimated annual cost without scholarship (if tuition were charged)

GKS monthly living allowance (if eligible)

POSCO TJ Park Foundation monthly allowance (if eligible)

POSTECH does not publish an 'average aid package' figure for international students in the way US universities do. The universal tuition scholarship is the primary mechanism. Living expense support varies by the specific additional scholarship programme secured. All amounts denominated in KRW are subject to exchange rate fluctuation.

https://www.postech.ac.kr/eng/admission-aid/scholarship_information.do

Merit and Need-Based Financial Opportunities at POSTECH

POSTECH's financial support for international undergraduates is primarily merit-based (tied to admission and academic standing), not need-based in the US sense. Understanding the distinction is important for financial planning.

Admission itself is the merit criterion. All admitted international undergraduates receive the tuition scholarship — making POSTECH's primary financial award an outcome of the admissions process, not a separate competition.

Students who achieve certified Korean language proficiency during enrolment may qualify for additional scholarship support through POSTECH's institutional programmes. Incentivised integration with the academic community.

Merit-Based (Continuing): Academic Standing

The tuition scholarship is conditional on maintaining POSTECH's academic standards. Students who fall below the required GPA risk losing the scholarship — meaning the 'merit' criterion applies not just at admission but throughout the degree.

POSTECH does not operate a comprehensive need-based financial aid programme for international undergraduates comparable to need-blind US institutions. Students with financial need beyond the tuition scholarship should explore GKS and POSCO TJ Park Foundation programmes, and contact POSTECH's student affairs office for information on any emergency financial assistance.

External Scholarship Opportunities for POSTECH Students

Beyond POSTECH's own support, several external scholarships are specifically available to international students studying at Korean universities. These are the primary routes to supplementary living expense support.

Administered by NIIED (National Institute for International Education) under Korea's Ministry of Education. Covers airfare, Korean language training, tuition (5,000,000 KRW/year), monthly living allowance (900,000 KRW/month), and settlement grant. Highly competitive; open to citizens of designated partner countries. Apply through your home country's Korean embassy or NIIED portal. Website: studyinkorea.go.kr

Offered by Gyeongsangbuk-do province (Pohang's administrative region). Benefits similar to national GKS; includes post-graduation regional employment support. Recipients must remain in the Gyeongsangbuk-do region for 3 years post-graduation. Website: gb.go.kr

POSCO TJ Park Foundation Global Scholarship

From POSTECH's founding entity, POSCO. Covers tuition, monthly living allowance, settlement allowance, and Korean language support for eligible nationalities. Separate application required. Website: postf.org

For newly admitted female international graduate students from Asia. Provides 5,000,000 KRW per year for up to 1 year (Master's) or 2 years (Doctoral). Three recipients annually. Contact student-affairs@postech.ac.kr. Primarily a graduate programme scholarship — undergraduate students should note this for future graduate-level planning.

https://adm-g.postech.ac.kr/ENG/graduate-info/support-policy/

POSTECH does not offer institutional student loans to international undergraduates. The Korean student loan system (Korean Student Aid Foundation, KOSAF) is primarily for domestic Korean students. International students should not plan on loan-based funding for their POSTECH education.

The financial model for international students at POSTECH is grant-based: the tuition scholarship covers the largest cost (tuition), and additional support through GKS and foundation scholarships can address living expenses for eligible students. Students who need to fund living expenses beyond scholarship support should plan through personal savings, family support, or permitted part-time work income.

This is a significant structural difference from US universities, where federal student loans and institutional loan programmes are widely available to international students. At POSTECH, plan conservatively: arrive with adequate personal financial reserves for at least the first semester before any supplementary scholarship income begins.

International students holding a D-2 (student) visa in South Korea may engage in part-time work under Korean immigration regulations, subject to hour restrictions during the academic term.

Students on a D-2 visa may work up to 20 hours per week during the academic term (unlimited during vacation periods), in permitted work categories. Working beyond the allowed hours is a visa violation with serious consequences. Verify current regulations with POSTECH's ISSS office or the Korean Immigration Service (HiKorea portal).

POSTECH's intensive research culture creates opportunities for undergraduate Research Assistant positions within labs and research centres. These paid positions are not only financially useful but are the most direct way to build your research profile for graduate school applications. Access is typically through faculty relationships established during coursework.

Teaching Assistantships (Limited, Upper Years)

Upper-year undergraduate students in strong academic standing may be eligible for Teaching Assistant roles. These are more common for graduate students but occasionally available to exceptional undergraduates. Contact the relevant department for current availability.

Off-campus employment is restricted under the D-2 visa. Working in an unauthorised capacity risks visa cancellation and deportation. Focus on on-campus opportunities — they are more aligned with POSTECH's research culture and carry no immigration risk.

How POSTECH's Financial Package Compares to Alternatives

For an international student considering elite global universities, POSTECH's financial model is genuinely unusual. This comparison helps frame the decision.

~$17,000–$22,000 (with Tuition Grant, service bond)

All figures are estimates based on publicly available data and are subject to change. Non-USD figures converted at indicative rates. KAIST scholarship amounts depend on programme and eligibility. NUS figures assume the Tuition Grant (which requires a 3-year employment commitment in Singapore after graduation).

https://www.postech.ac.kr/eng/admission-aid/scholarship_information.do

The True All-In Cost of a POSTECH Education

For admitted international undergraduates, the all-in cost of a 4-year POSTECH degree is dominated by living expenses, not tuition. This section models the total investment.

At $8,000–$10,000 USD per year in total costs (after the tuition scholarship), a 4-year POSTECH degree costs approximately $32,000–$40,000 USD in total living and personal expenses. This is less than the annual cost of attendance at most comparable UK or US institutions. If you secure the GKS scholarship in addition to POSTECH's own award, the out-of-pocket living costs can be reduced further by the GKS monthly allowance.

At $8,000–$10,000 USD per year, a full 4-year degree at POSTECH requires approximately $32,000–$40,000 USD in total living, personal, and travel expenses. Dormitory housing on campus significantly reduces food and transport costs.

Arrive with a minimum of 6 months of living expenses as a personal reserve. Initial settling-in costs (bedding, SIM card, transport, supplies) are not covered by the tuition scholarship. The GKS settlement grant covers these for eligible students; others should budget separately.

All POSTECH costs are denominated in Korean won (KRW). USD estimates in this guide are indicative. Build in a 10–15% buffer for exchange rate volatility over a multi-year degree. Monitor the KRW/USD or KRW/home-currency rate regularly.

How to Address Financial Aid Issues at POSTECH

Since POSTECH's primary financial mechanism for international undergraduates is the automatic tuition scholarship, the most common financial concern is not 'how do I get more aid' but 'what happens if my scholarship is at risk.'

Understand Your Scholarship Continuation Requirements

Before your first semester, confirm with POSTECH's student affairs office exactly what GPA and academic performance thresholds are required to maintain your tuition scholarship. Do not assume you know — read the official policy.

Contact POSTECH's student affairs office or your academic department immediately if you are struggling academically. POSTECH offers academic support resources, and early communication is far more effective than waiting until a scholarship review period.

Contact postech-iuadmission@postech.ac.kr or the student affairs office to understand the reinstatement process. In some cases, demonstrated academic recovery in subsequent semesters can restore scholarship eligibility. Do not assume the loss is permanent without a direct conversation.

POSTECH's ISSS (International Student Support Services) office is the first point of contact for unexpected financial emergencies. They can advise on available institutional support, connect you with relevant scholarship programmes, and assist with understanding visa-related work permission if you need to generate income.

Year-by-Year Financial Planning for POSTECH

A realistic financial plan for a 4-year POSTECH undergraduate education should account for the following phases and cost drivers.

Budget the $80 USD application fee. If applying for GKS simultaneously (strongly recommended for eligible nationalities), factor in the time investment and any document costs. GKS applications require official transcripts, medical certificates, and other formal documents.

First-arrival costs are front-loaded: SIM card, bedding, initial food, transport to Pohang from the airport. The GKS settlement allowance (200,000 KRW) covers part of this for eligible students. Others should arrive with at least $1,000–$1,500 USD liquid for the first month.

Budget $8,000–$10,000 USD per year. Dormitory housing on campus reduces food and transport costs substantially compared to off-campus living. Pohang is one of South Korea's most affordable cities — living costs are significantly below Seoul.

Budget 1–2 return trips home per year depending on distance. Flights from POSTECH (nearest major airport: Daegu or Busan) to key international hubs vary from $300–$1,500 USD depending on destination. Factor this into your annual budget.

Graduation and Post-Study: Visa Transition

After graduation, D-2 visa holders transition to other visa categories for employment or further study. If you secure employment at a Korean company (Samsung, POSCO, etc.), your employer will typically manage the visa transition. For those departing Korea, budget for return travel and initial costs in the destination country.

No Common App, No Supplements — Just Your Research Story

POSTECH is a South Korean university that operates entirely outside US and UK admissions frameworks. There is no Common App, no UCAS form, no coalition of supplemental essay prompts. Applications go through POSTECH's own international admissions portal or the Study in Korea platform. Instead of essays, you submit a Study Plan — a document that is part personal statement, part research proposal, and part statement of purpose. This is the document that determines whether POSTECH sees you as a future researcher or just another applicant.

https://adm-iu.postech.ac.kr/user/admission/guide/international.do

How International Students Apply to POSTECH

POSTECH's international undergraduate admissions are document-centred. There are no numbered supplemental essay prompts, activity lists, or short-answer sections. Your case is made through your transcript, English proficiency score, Study Plan, and letters of recommendation.

Applications are submitted through POSTECH's international undergraduate admissions portal at adm-iu.postech.ac.kr, or alternatively through the Study in Korea centralised portal at studyinkorea.go.kr. The portals open on a seasonal cycle — confirm exact dates for your target intake (spring or fall).

Upload certified copies of your transcript, proof of graduation or expected graduation, English proficiency test score, letters of recommendation, and your Study Plan. Documents not in English or Korean require certified translation. Some documents may need apostille or notarisation depending on your country.

Document Review (No Interview by Default)

POSTECH's admissions committee evaluates applications through document review. There is no formal entrance examination or interview for international applicants (unlike domestic Korean applicants who take the CSAT). Your submitted documents are your entire application.

Successful applicants receive an admission decision and, upon confirmation, a Certificate of Admission used to apply for a Korean D-2 student visa. A structured orientation programme precedes the semester start.

https://adm-iu.postech.ac.kr/user/admission/guide/international.do

POSTECH's Study Plan — Your Most Important Document

The Study Plan is the heart of the POSTECH international undergraduate application. It is not a US-style personal narrative about a formative experience. It is a forward-looking document that demonstrates you have thought carefully about what you want to study, why POSTECH is the right environment, and how you plan to contribute as a researcher.

Describe your academic preparation in your chosen field of study, including relevant coursework, competitions, projects, and independent research.

Be specific and honest. If you won a physics olympiad regional prize, say so and describe what you learned. If you self-studied a topic beyond your school curriculum, name the resource and what it revealed. Do not just list your IB subjects — explain what you have done with them and what drove you deeper.

https://adm-iu.postech.ac.kr/user/admission/guide/international.do

Explain why you have chosen to apply to POSTECH and how POSTECH's specific research strengths, programmes, and facilities relate to your academic and research goals.

Name specific research centres, faculty members, or facilities that connect directly to your field. Mentioning the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory, a specific department's research group, or the Apple Developer Academy is far more compelling than 'POSTECH is a world-ranked university.' Show that you understand what makes POSTECH different — not just that it is good.

https://adm-iu.postech.ac.kr/user/admission/guide/international.do

Describe the research area or problem you hope to explore at POSTECH and explain why this problem matters to you.

A specific, focused research interest signals readiness for POSTECH's research culture far more effectively than broad ambitions. 'I want to study materials science because I am interested in developing better electrolytes for solid-state batteries, and POSTECH's Materials Science department and PAL synchrotron access are directly relevant' is infinitely stronger than 'I am passionate about science and technology.'

https://adm-iu.postech.ac.kr/user/admission/guide/international.do

Where do you see your academic and professional journey going after POSTECH? How does this degree fit into your longer-term plans?

Whether your goal is a PhD at a global research university, a career in Korea's semiconductor industry, or founding a deep-tech startup, show that your plans are connected to POSTECH's strengths. Vague aspirations ('make the world a better place through science') are a missed opportunity to demonstrate strategic thinking.

https://adm-iu.postech.ac.kr/user/admission/guide/international.do

Exact Study Plan prompts and word limits are specified in the official admissions guideline published for each intake cycle. The elements above represent the typical structural requirements based on POSTECH's admissions model. Always verify current requirements at adm-iu.postech.ac.kr before drafting.

Most international students underestimate the Study Plan because it is not called an 'essay.' It carries the same weight as a top-tier personal statement but requires a different kind of writing: research-oriented, specific, and forward-looking rather than retrospective and narrative.

Open with a precise intellectual moment — a result in an experiment that surprised you, a paper you read that changed how you understood your field, or a problem you encountered that you could not solve. The opening lines determine whether the reader is engaged. 'Since childhood, I have been fascinated by science' is a discarded opening. 'When the X-ray diffraction pattern came back inverted, I spent three weeks understanding why' is a beginning.

Research POSTECH's departments, faculty, and research centres before you write. The Pohang Accelerator Laboratory, the Institute for Basic Science affiliation, the Apple Developer Academy, and the specific research groups within each department are not general knowledge — showing you know them demonstrates preparation. Admissions faculty can immediately distinguish applicants who have done their homework from those who have not.

The Study Plan is a causal argument: 'Here is who I am as a scientist or engineer. Here is why POSTECH specifically — not just a good university — is where I need to be. Here is what I will build from that.' Make this argument explicit. Do not leave the connection implicit and expect the reader to infer it.

Intellectual humility is valued in research environments. If you are genuinely unsure which subfield you want to enter, say so clearly and explain which explorations you plan to pursue in Year 1. Claiming certainty you do not have about a research direction is a common and transparent mistake that experienced researchers immediately recognise.

Supplementary Documents — How to Strengthen Your Application

Beyond the Study Plan, the quality of your supplementary documents significantly shapes the admissions committee's assessment. Unlike US applications with short-answer activity descriptions and additional essay prompts, POSTECH's supplementary evidence comes entirely through official documents and the Study Plan itself.

Two letters from science or mathematics teachers are standard. A letter from a research supervisor, lab mentor, or university professor who has worked with you directly is the most powerful recommendation available to international applicants. Generic commendations from school principals add little. Choose recommenders who can describe specific evidence of your research capability — an experiment you conducted, a problem you solved independently, a question you asked that showed unusual depth.

If you have conducted independent research, contributed to a publication, or completed a significant science project, include evidence — a paper abstract, a competition write-up, or a lab report — in your portfolio. POSTECH's admissions process is research-oriented, and demonstrated output is the most powerful differentiator available.

Science olympiad results (IPhO, IChO, IMO, IOI), national or international competition placements, and mathematics or computing competition certificates are meaningful supplementary evidence. Include official certificates or score reports where available. If you were a national team selection for any international science olympiad, this belongs prominently in your application.

Any document not originally in English or Korean must be accompanied by a certified translation by a recognised translation agency. Allow adequate time — certified translations take 2–10 business days depending on provider and language pair. Missing or uncertified translations are a common cause of application delays and rejections at the eligibility review stage.

Selecting Your Department and Research Direction

Unlike many universities where declaring a major is deferred until Year 2, POSTECH's admissions process expects you to identify a target department or field of study. Your Study Plan will be read by faculty in that department, and the alignment between your stated interests and your academic profile matters significantly.

Consider Physics or Mathematics as your primary department. Research directions might include condensed matter physics, quantum computing, mathematical physics, or computational mathematics. POSTECH's PAL-XFEL facility and IBS affiliation are particularly relevant for physics applicants. In your Study Plan, reference specific POSTECH research groups working in your area of interest.

If you want to build things — hardware and systems

Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Computer Science & Engineering are POSTECH's strongest engineering departments by research output and industry recruitment. Semiconductor Engineering is a newer focused programme with direct links to Korea's dominant industrial sector (Samsung, SK Hynix). Reference the specific research groups and industry connections that connect to your interest.

If you love Chemistry or Biology at the molecular level

Chemical Engineering and Life Sciences both have strong research cultures at POSTECH. The Pohang Biotechnology Center (PBC) is a dedicated research facility for molecular medicine and drug development — reference it specifically in your Study Plan if molecular biology or bioengineering is your direction.

If you are interested in technology, entrepreneurship, or systems thinking

Industrial and Management Engineering, Convergence IT Engineering, and access to the Apple Developer Academy represent POSTECH's interfaces with the social and economic dimensions of technology. These are less common choices for international applicants and may stand out. The Study Plan for these departments should connect your interest to specific POSTECH resources — the Apple Developer Academy, startup incubation programmes, or computational social science research.

What Undermines International Applications to POSTECH

Writing a Study Plan as if it were a US Common App personal essay — POSTECH wants a research-oriented statement, not an emotional narrative about overcoming adversity or personal growth.

Failing to name specific POSTECH departments, labs, research centres, or faculty — generic praise for 'POSTECH's reputation' signals that you have not done your research.

Submitting a Study Plan that could apply equally to any science university — POSTECH's reviewers read dozens of applications describing a passion for science; only specific, grounded statements stand out.

Not researching Korean visa requirements early — the D-2 student visa process has documentation requirements (medical check, financial proof, notarised documents) that take time to fulfil; start early after receiving your admission offer.

Underestimating the importance of recommendation letters — a lukewarm letter from a well-known professor is less valuable than a specific, enthusiastic letter from a teacher who knows your work deeply and can describe concrete evidence of your research capability.

Mistaking the 'optional' test policy for an invitation to skip academic evidence — if you do not submit standardised tests, your transcript and Study Plan carry the entire evidential burden of your academic profile.

Assuming Pohang is like Seoul — the campus is intentionally self-contained and the city is quieter. Ignoring this reality in your Study Plan reads as naivety about where you are going. POSTECH rewards students who are motivated by the work, not by the city.

Applying with a biology-only background without mathematical depth — POSTECH's curriculum requires mathematical maturity across all departments from the first week of classes.

Application & Study Plan — Common Questions

No. POSTECH has its own international undergraduate admissions portal at adm-iu.postech.ac.kr and also participates in the Study in Korea central platform (studyinkorea.go.kr). There is no Common App, Coalition, or UCAS route for POSTECH.

Is there a personal statement requirement?

Yes — the Study Plan is POSTECH's equivalent of a personal statement, but it is more research-focused than a UK personal statement or US Common App essay. It requires you to articulate your academic background, research interests, reason for choosing POSTECH specifically, and future plans as a scientist or engineer.

Length requirements are specified in the official admissions guideline published for each intake cycle. Confirm the exact word or page limit at adm-iu.postech.ac.kr before drafting. Typically, a Study Plan of 1–2 pages of focused, specific content is expected. Quality matters more than length — reviewers remember specific plans, not comprehensive ones.

Are there interviews for international undergraduate applicants?

POSTECH's standard international undergraduate admissions process is document-based — there is no formal interview stage for most applicants. This is different from domestic Korean admissions and from Oxbridge or selective US university processes. Your Study Plan, transcripts, and recommendations are your complete case. Some specific programmes or circumstances may involve additional assessment — confirm with postech-iuadmission@postech.ac.kr.

Your application is typically directed toward a primary department or field of study. Check the current admissions guideline for whether multiple preferences can be listed. Your Study Plan must align with your stated department choice — a mismatch between stated department and Study Plan content is a common application error.

Should I write my Study Plan in English or Korean?

For international undergraduate applicants applying through the international track, English is the standard language of the Study Plan. Confirm the language requirement in the current admissions guideline. If you have Korean language ability, you may wish to note it in your application, but the Study Plan itself should be in English unless instructed otherwise.

What if I cannot access the official admissions portal from my country?

Contact POSTECH's international undergraduate admissions office directly: postech-iuadmission@postech.ac.kr or +82-54-279-3629. They can advise on alternative submission routes if the online portal is inaccessible from your location.

How do I research POSTECH's faculty and labs before writing my Study Plan?

Start with postech.ac.kr/eng and navigate to each department's faculty pages and research centre pages. The Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (pal.postech.ac.kr), the Institute for Basic Science affiliation, and each department's research groups have web presences. Read 1–2 recent papers from faculty whose work connects to your interests — this level of preparation is detectable in the Study Plan and is exactly what POSTECH's reviewers are looking for.
