#45 in QS World Rankings and #52 in Times Higher Education. SJTU is one of only nine universities in China's C9 League — the country's answer to the Ivy League — and the birthplace of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU/Shanghai Ranking).
SJTU operates dozens of national and international research centres across engineering, naval architecture, biomedicine, and AI. Undergraduates can access faculty labs from Year 1, and the 8:1 student-to-faculty ratio ensures close research mentorship.
SJTU's Global College delivers a fully English-taught, US-model engineering curriculum with faculty recruited from leading North American and European universities — offering a genuine international experience within China's most selective engineering institution.
Shanghai is China's financial capital and a global hub for technology, automotive, aerospace, and finance. SJTU's industry ties — Huawei, SAIC Motor, COMAC, Alibaba, McKinsey Shanghai — translate directly into internship, research, and employment pathways.
Strong international students can access the fully-funded Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), the Shanghai Government Scholarship, and SJTU's own First/Second/Third-Class tiered scholarships — making competitive study at SJTU potentially free.
91% of SJTU graduates are employed or in postgraduate study within six months. SJTU alumni are highly competitive for graduate programmes at top US and European universities — the research record and faculty recommendations available at SJTU are genuine assets.
Shanghai Jiao Tong University is not merely one of China's best universities — it is a globally competitive research institution with the infrastructure, faculty, and industry ties to launch careers and graduate study anywhere in the world. For international students who want elite technical education in Asia's most connected city, SJTU is the defining choice.
International Applicant Profile — Key Benchmarks

3.4/4.0 is the stated minimum — competitive admits sit significantly higher
Subject performance in mathematics and sciences weighted heavily
IB Math HL or A-Level Further Maths expected for engineering programmes
Upward grade trajectory positively considered
SJTU states a minimum GPA of 3.4 on a 4.0 scale for international applicants. In practice, competitive admits — especially to engineering, computer science, and Global College programmes — demonstrate significantly stronger academic records, with particular strength in mathematics and the sciences.
Native speakers / English-medium school graduates may be exempt
SJTU requires proof of English proficiency for all international students enrolling in English-taught programmes. Strong SAT Evidence-Based Reading & Writing scores may substitute for TOEFL/IELTS for eligible Global College applicants.
IB Diploma: 38+ points; IB Math HL 5+ for engineering tracks
A-Level: A or A* in Mathematics; three strong A-Level subjects for most programmes
AP: scores of 4–5 in Calculus BC, Physics C, Chemistry accepted
Gaokao or national equivalents accepted for domestic-education applicants
SJTU accepts IB, A-Level, AP, and other international qualifications. The benchmarks above reflect the competitive profile for Global College and engineering programmes. For broader international tracks, requirements vary — verify directly on the official admissions portal.
GPA, English Proficiency & International Qualifications
SJTU Application Components — Portal, Documents & Statements
Main SJTU track: apply via apply.sjtu.edu.cn. Global College track: apply via Common App (CEEB code 6563 for SAT). The application fee is USD 120, non-refundable.
Official high school transcripts in English covering all years of secondary education. Subject-specific performance in mathematics, physics, and chemistry is weighted heavily by reviewers.
TOEFL iBT (min. 85), IELTS Academic (min. 6.0), or Duolingo English Test (min. 110). Native speakers from accredited English-medium schools may apply for exemption.
Two letters required: one from your high school counsellor and one from a core academic teacher (mathematics or science preferred). Letters must be in English and speak to academic ability and character.
Global College (Common App): 650-word Common App personal essay. Main track: a study plan of 500–1,000 words explaining academic goals and why SJTU specifically. Both matter more than most applicants realise.
Proof of a minimum CNY 100,000 deposit (~USD 13,700) in a personal bank account. This demonstrates financial capacity — it is not a payment to the university and the funds remain yours.
Test-optional for the main track; strongly recommended for Global College. SAT code 6563. High ERW/Reading scores may satisfy TOEFL/IELTS for eligible native English speakers.
Shortlisted applicants for Global College, engineering, and medicine tracks may be invited for an online interview. The interview is also part of the scholarship ranking process — preparation matters.
SJTU's international application is primarily direct — most programmes do not use the Common App. Only the SJTU Global College track accepts the Common App. All other international applicants apply through SJTU's dedicated portal at apply.sjtu.edu.cn.
SJTU reviewers — often faculty — use the study plan to assess academic motivation and fit with specific programmes. Generic statements about 'world-class research' are immediately identifiable. Name specific labs, professors, or joint programmes that genuinely match your interests.
Unlike US Common App essays, SJTU study plans should lead with academic and intellectual substance. Your intended field, specific research interests, and academic trajectory should dominate — not a personal life story.
Global College: write what only you can write
If applying to Global College via Common App, the personal essay must stand out among thousands. Connect your intellectual curiosity to a specific domain. Show a mind that is analytical and curious — not just accomplished.
Scholarship interviews are part of the written process
The interview at SJTU is explicitly tied to scholarship ranking. What you write in your study plan shapes the interview conversation — your written statement and spoken explanation must be consistent and mutually reinforcing.
SJTU Application Statements — Study Plan, Personal Essay & Interview
Describe your intended major, academic background, relevant achievements, and explain specifically why SJTU — reference actual programmes, labs, or joint institutes that align with your goals. 500–1,000 words.
Standard Common App personal essay — any of the seven prompts, 650 words. For Global College applicants, connect your intellectual curiosity to a specific technical or scientific domain. Your essay should reveal how you think, not just what you have achieved.
Global College — Common App Personal Essay
SJTU does not require supplemental essays in the US sense. For scholarship consideration, ensure your study plan strongly articulates your research motivation and specific SJTU programme fit.
Submitting a generic study plan that praises SJTU's rankings without engaging with any specific programme, faculty, or research area that is actually available at the university.
What SJTU Admissions Officers Are Looking For
The single most important academic signal at SJTU. For engineering, CS, and science programmes, the highest available mathematics — IB Math HL, A-Level Further Mathematics, or AP Calculus BC — is expected. Outstanding mathematics performance is a near-universal trait among competitive admits.
Strong grades in physics, chemistry, and biology — and evidence of engagement beyond class. Olympiad awards, national science competitions, independent research, and science fair achievements carry significant weight in distinguishing otherwise similar academic profiles.
SJTU is a research university, and the admissions process reflects this. Students who can articulate a specific research interest — and ideally show early engagement with it — stand out from those who express only general enthusiasm for a field.
For the English-taught track, English ability is assessed across multiple application components: the English test score, the written statement, and the interview. Marginal test scores combined with a weak written statement create a combined risk that is difficult to overcome.
SJTU values international students who have genuinely engaged with the decision to study in China — not those who are there by default. Admissions reviewers respond positively to applicants who demonstrate awareness of Shanghai's academic and professional environment.
The SJTU admissions process evaluates what kind of student will contribute to the campus community and complete the degree with distinction. Maturity, intellectual honesty, and clarity of academic purpose are meaningful signals — especially in the interview and written materials.
SJTU's international admissions process evaluates applications holistically, but with a strong weighting toward academic credentials — particularly in mathematics and the sciences. Understanding what the review team is specifically looking for allows applicants to present their profile with precision.
CSC scholarship — fully covers tuition + stipend
SJTU Scholarships & Financial Aid for International Students
All figures are estimates based on officially published data. Scholarship awards are competitive and not guaranteed. Confirm current CNY-denominated figures at gc.sjtu.edu.cn or global.sjtu.edu.cn before budgeting.
SJTU does not operate a need-blind or no-loan financial aid model as at US Ivy League universities. Aid is merit-based, delivered through named scholarships. However, the combination of lower base costs (approximately USD 27,000/year all-in) and competitive scholarship availability makes SJTU genuinely accessible for strong students who apply strategically.
International students at SJTU can access the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC — fully funded), the Shanghai Government Scholarship, and SJTU's own First/Second/Third-Class tiered awards. These are competitive, based primarily on academic achievement and interview performance, and applied for simultaneously with the main application.
How SJTU Aid Works — Key Differences from US Universities
Tuition, accommodation, and living stipend — full coverage
Full tuition + CNY 2,500/month stipend + accommodation subsidy
50% tuition waiver + accommodation subsidy + insurance
Full tuition covered; may include living allowance
Scholarship pools are larger for earlier applicants
Earlier review provides a competitive advantage for the most selective programmes
CSC scholarship Round 1 (December 15) is more competitive than Round 2
More time to prepare for an interview if invited
Conditional offer gives certainty before final exams
Application must be complete by November 15 — less time to strengthen the profile
Final exam results are not yet available to submit
Less time to request strong recommendation letters
If not offered a scholarship in the early round, the Regular round has fewer awards remaining
SJTU Application Rounds — Early Action vs Regular and Scholarship Timing
SJTU does not have binding Early Decision like US universities. The Early Action option (November 15) is non-binding but strategically important — particularly for scholarship applications, where earlier submission is almost always advantageous.
Apply by November 15 (Early Action) if your application is complete and you are also applying for the Chinese Government Scholarship. CSC Round 1 (December 15) requires an SJTU application to already be in progress — do not leave both until March. Early Action is non-binding; you can still consider other offers.

SJTU Admissions Interview — Format, Questions & Preparation
Mention a specific SJTU lab, research centre, or joint programme — not just 'world-class research'. Show you have done the research.
Why did you choose SJTU and this specific programme?
Be ready to discuss a specific concept or problem you have explored. The interview wants to see intellectual depth, not just a résumé.
Tell us about a scientific or mathematical topic you explored beyond your school curriculum.
Connect your academic background to a specific type of work you want to do. Avoid vague answers about 'making a difference'.
What do you hope to research or work on after graduating from SJTU?
Be honest but positive. Show cultural awareness and practical readiness — the interview panel wants to know you will thrive in Shanghai.
How have you prepared for studying and living in China?
Reference your strongest academic achievement or a specific project. Quantify where possible.
What is your strongest academic area and how have you demonstrated that strength?
Not all SJTU international applicants are interviewed, but shortlisted candidates — particularly for Global College, engineering, and medicine — receive an online interview invitation. The SJTU interview is explicitly part of the scholarship ranking process: a strong interview can upgrade your scholarship from Second-Class to First-Class. Treat it as both an admissions conversation and a scholarship competition.

Our SJTU Admissions Track Record & Student Success Stories
Tychr helped me understand that SJTU wasn't just looking for good grades — they wanted to see genuine research motivation. My study plan, which I rewrote twice with my Tychr counsellor, explicitly connected my interest in biomedical engineering to SJTU's specific lab work on neural interfaces. I received the First-Class Scholarship.
I was initially intimidated by the financial guarantee requirement. Tychr walked me through exactly what it meant — and how the Chinese Government Scholarship, which I received, would essentially make SJTU free. The process was very structured once I had the right guidance.
My interview at SJTU was the first time an admissions process felt like a real academic conversation. They asked me to explain why I was interested in naval architecture specifically — and to describe an engineering problem I had explored on my own. Tychr's mock interview preparation made the difference.
SJTU — Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering
Do I need to speak Chinese to study at SJTU?
For SJTU Global College: no — all coursework is in English. For most other international tracks: your specific programme determines the language of instruction, so verify before applying. However, all international undergraduates must achieve HSK Level 4 (intermediate Chinese) before graduation. SJTU offers free Chinese classes, and Shanghai is an immersive environment for rapid language acquisition.
SJTU Global College is an elite, English-taught engineering school within SJTU. It offers fully English-medium programmes in engineering disciplines, uses Common App for admissions, recruits internationally-experienced faculty, and maintains its own scholarship programme. It is the most accessible entry point for non-Chinese-speaking international students seeking an SJTU degree.
How do I apply — through Common App or directly?
Global College track: via Common App (CEEB 6563). All other SJTU international programmes: directly through apply.sjtu.edu.cn. Do not confuse the two — they have different requirements, deadlines, and review processes.
Can international students get scholarships?
Yes. The Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) is fully funded — tuition, accommodation, and a living stipend. The Shanghai Government Scholarship covers tuition and may include a living allowance. SJTU's internal scholarships (First/Second/Third-Class) cover 100%, 50%, or 25% of tuition respectively. Apply for scholarships as part of your main application — there is no separate process.
What is the financial guarantee requirement?
All international applicants must demonstrate a minimum of CNY 100,000 (~USD 13,700) in a personal bank account. This is a financial capacity demonstration — the money remains in your account. It is not a payment to the university.
Is SJTU recognised for graduate admissions in the US and Europe?
Yes. SJTU is well-recognised globally, especially for STEM disciplines. Graduates from SJTU engineering, computer science, and biomedical programmes are competitive applicants at top US and European graduate schools. SJTU's research output, faculty publications, and institutional rankings travel well internationally.
Shanghai is relatively expensive by Chinese standards. On-campus dormitories cost approximately CNY 3,000/month (~USD 420). Add food, transport, and personal spending and budget approximately CNY 3,000–5,000/month more. SJTU's official estimated annual living cost is approximately USD 8,000. Purchasing power in Shanghai is significantly stronger than the raw dollar figure suggests.
Not for all applicants. Shortlisted candidates for Global College, engineering, and medicine programmes are invited for online interviews. An interview invitation is a positive sign — it means you have cleared initial screening. Critically, the interview also determines scholarship tier, so strong preparation is essential.
Getting into SJTU as an international student is not about having the highest GPA — it is about showing the right academic depth, in the right subjects, with a clear and specific reason for choosing this university.

SJTU Academic Requirements — The Honest Breakdown for International Students
What GPA, IB scores, test scores, and academic profile do competitive SJTU international applicants actually have? And how does SJTU's holistic review process work for students from IB, A-Level, AP, and other curricula?
The honest picture: SJTU states a minimum GPA of 3.4 on a 4.0 scale. In practice, competitive admits — especially to engineering, computer science, Global College, and medicine — sit considerably higher. The 3.4 threshold is a floor, not a target.
Stated minimum GPA for international applicants
Subject GPA expected in mathematics for engineering tracks
A 3.4 GPA is the stated minimum, not a competitive profile. For Global College and engineering programmes, competitive admits typically demonstrate near-perfect performance in mathematics and sciences. The absolute GPA matters less than the pattern — exceptional grades in rigorous subjects.
SJTU evaluates international transcripts in the context of each applicant's specific educational system. A student from an IB school is assessed differently from one from a US AP programme or a UK A-Level school. SJTU admissions officers are experienced readers of international transcripts and understand grading norms across systems.
What this means for international students
Grade trajectory matters. A student whose performance has improved significantly over high school — particularly in mathematics and sciences — presents a more compelling academic picture than one whose performance has plateaued or declined in the senior year. Context is considered.
SJTU does not require a specific class rank and understands that many international school systems do not provide it. The university evaluates academic performance in the context of each student's specific curriculum and school environment.
Every SJTU application is read with reference to the specific curriculum the student completed. An IB diploma student is evaluated against IB benchmarks; an A-Level student against A-Level expectations; a student from a national system against the norms of that system. SJTU admissions reviewers include faculty with direct international academic experience.
Taking the most rigorous courses available at your school — including the highest mathematics level — is more important than protecting your GPA through easier options. SJTU engineering programmes require advanced mathematical preparation; a student who chose a lower mathematics track is at a significant disadvantage regardless of overall GPA.
Class Rank and School Context — How SJTU Evaluates Your Academic Record
For students at schools with limited advanced course offerings, the admissions office considers available courses. However, it remains important to demonstrate the highest possible mathematics preparation — if your school does not offer IB Math HL, supplementary study through AP Calculus BC or A-Level Further Mathematics can demonstrate the level of preparation SJTU expects.
For students at schools with limited advanced options
SAT Data — SJTU does not publish official SAT bands. For Global College, indicative score ranges based on applicant reports show competitive admitted students in the 1350–1450 range.
Indicative competitive range (Global College)
SAT Scores at SJTU — Strategy and Context
For SJTU engineering and science programmes, the SAT Math section score is the most important SAT metric. A score of 700+ in Math signals quantitative capability directly relevant to the programmes on offer. A high ERW score may also satisfy TOEFL/IELTS requirements for eligible native English speakers applying to Global College.
Tychr's structured SAT preparation programme averages 150+ point improvement over 8–12 weeks. Students targeting SJTU Global College should aim for a composite score of 1350+ as a competitive baseline.
SAT is optional for the main SJTU international track but strongly recommended for Global College. If your score is above 1350 and your Math section is strong, submitting adds positive value. If your score would not add meaningfully to your academic profile, the main SJTU track allows you to apply without it.
ACT data for SJTU — similar to SAT, no official bands are published. Competitive Global College applicants typically present ACT composites of 29–34.
Indicative competitive range (Global College)
High — data interpretation for engineering
ACT Scores at SJTU — Context and Strategy
SJTU does not publish a superscore policy for SAT or ACT. For the main track, simply submit your best composite score. For Global College, confirm the current superscore policy on the official admissions page before deciding which scores to submit.
SJTU does not prefer one over the other. Submit whichever test plays to your strengths — particularly quantitative ability.
Precise mathematical reasoning and careful reading.
Speed and Science section data interpretation — particularly relevant for engineering applicants.
Take a diagnostic for both tests before committing to either. If your ACT Science and Math sections are strong (30+), the ACT may serve you well at SJTU — the Science section's quantitative data emphasis aligns with SJTU's engineering culture.
SJTU's official test policy for international students is test-optional for the main admissions track. However, for Global College, submitting strong test scores is strongly recommended and can substitute for TOEFL/IELTS in some circumstances.
SJTU Test-Optional Policy — The Strategic Decision Explained
Main SJTU international track: test-optional. SAT and ACT are accepted and strengthen the application, but transcripts and English proficiency test scores are the primary requirements. SJTU Global College track: strongly recommends SAT or ACT. A strong score can partly substitute for TOEFL/IELTS if you are from an English-speaking country.
Your SAT is above 1350 (especially if Math is above 700): submit. The score adds positive value.
You are applying to Global College: submit SAT or ACT — it is strongly recommended and can sometimes substitute for TOEFL/IELTS.
You are applying for a scholarship: strong test scores may improve your ranking in the competitive scholarship pool.
Your SAT is below 1200 (main track) or below 1300 (Global College): withholding is typically better.
Your score would highlight a significant gap between your test performance and your academic record.
Test-optional at SJTU means the same thing it does elsewhere: removing the score removes a potential positive signal, not a requirement. Strong test scores still provide the admissions committee with standardised academic evidence that complements your transcript — particularly valuable when the committee is comparing applicants from many different educational systems simultaneously.
SJTU states an IB band of 38 as the competitive benchmark. For Global College and engineering programmes, IB Math HL 5+ is a specific requirement — IB Math Applications and Interpretation (AISL) is not considered equivalent by SJTU engineering admissions. The EE and extended project work can provide useful supplementary evidence of research capability.
IB Math HL (Analysis & Approaches preferred); 5+ for engineering tracks
Physics HL, Chemistry HL, or Computer Science HL for engineering; Biology HL for biomedical
A or B in a relevant scientific subject is a meaningful positive signal
A-Level results are well understood and respected by SJTU. For engineering and science programmes, A or A* in Mathematics (and ideally Further Mathematics) is strongly expected. The A-Level Math A+ (equivalent to A*) is a stated benchmark for SJTU Global College. A strong combination of three A-Level subjects in relevant disciplines is the baseline expectation.
A-Level Mathematics A or A*; Further Mathematics strongly preferred for engineering
Physics A/A*, Chemistry A/A*, or Computer Science for engineering tracks
Reviewed alongside predicted A-Level grades
IB, A-Level and AP at SJTU — Specific Benchmarks and Guidance
For students in US-curriculum schools, AP course performance is a meaningful component of the academic profile at SJTU. While SJTU's main track is test-optional for SAT/ACT, AP scores in relevant subjects demonstrate academic rigour within a US-style curriculum.
AP scores of 4 or 5 in Calculus BC, Physics C (Mechanics and Electricity & Magnetism), Chemistry, Computer Science A, and Statistics are viewed very favourably for SJTU engineering and science programmes. The pattern of AP subject choices — and the scores achieved — signals the depth of STEM preparation.
Aim for 4s and 5s in the core STEM subjects. Taking AP Calculus BC, AP Physics C, and a third relevant AP (Chemistry, CS, or Statistics) and scoring 4+ is a strong profile for most SJTU engineering programmes.
AP scores serve a dual function at SJTU: they provide standardised academic evidence that transcends the grading norms of individual schools, and they demonstrate that the applicant has pursued the most rigorous curriculum available to them.
AP Courses at SJTU — What Counts and What to Take
SJTU may award credit for strong AP scores in some subjects — reducing course load in Year 1. Confirm the current AP credit policy with the admissions office, as it varies by programme and school.
International students who do not have access to AP courses should not artificially pursue AP exams. SJTU evaluates your academic profile against what was available at your specific school. IB or A-Level is fully appropriate for non-US-curriculum applicants and is evaluated accordingly.
SJTU's admissions process places significant weight on the rigour of secondary school curriculum — not just the grades achieved. For a technical research university, the specific courses taken and the level of challenge demonstrated matter as much as the GPA.
Secondary School Rigour — SJTU's Core Academic Expectation
Taking the highest available mathematics and science courses at your school — not the easiest route to the highest GPA.
Rigour is always evaluated relative to what was available at the specific school. A student at an IB school who chose SL Mathematics over HL Mathematics will be evaluated differently from one who chose HL — regardless of whether the SL grade is higher. SJTU engineering programmes require HL-level mathematical preparation as a foundation; choosing SL for grade protection is one of the most consequential mistakes SJTU applicants make.
Academic rigour at SJTU means: choosing the highest mathematics level available; completing relevant sciences at the highest available level; demonstrating a coherent academic programme that reflects genuine intellectual ambition in a STEM direction.
SJTU reviewers specifically look for the mathematics choice as the first signal of academic seriousness. A student who took IB Math HL and achieved a 6 is demonstrably more prepared for SJTU engineering than one who took IB Math AISL and achieved a 7. The same principle applies across every qualification system SJTU reads.
SJTU's strongest programmes — engineering, computer science, naval architecture, biomedical engineering — require deep preparation in core STEM subjects. The university expects incoming international students to have studied these subjects at the highest available level, with strong evidence of genuine engagement.
Subject Preparation — What SJTU Expects You to Have Studied
The single most important subject. IB Math HL (Analysis and Approaches preferred), A-Level Mathematics + Further Mathematics, or AP Calculus BC is expected for any engineering or science programme. Competition mathematics experience — national Olympiad participation, AIME qualification, or similar — is a meaningful differentiator.
Essential for mechanical, electrical, naval, and aerospace engineering applicants. IB Physics HL, A-Level Physics, or AP Physics C are expected. Strong Olympiad performance in physics is one of the most compelling differentiators for SJTU engineering applicants.
Critical for biomedical engineering, materials science, and medicine applicants. Chemistry is also important as a secondary science for engineering tracks. SJTU School of Medicine has specific prerequisite expectations — verify the current requirements on the official site.
For computer science and AI applicants, formal CS study and demonstrated programming ability strengthen the profile. SJTU's CS programmes are among China's most competitive — the admitted cohort typically shows significant extracurricular technical engagement.
For the English-taught track, English Language and Literature performance is taken seriously as evidence of communication ability. Strong essay-based English performance demonstrates readiness for academic English-language work at an elite level.
SJTU requires proof of English proficiency from all non-native English speakers applying to English-taught programmes. Native speakers or those from accredited English-medium secondary schools may apply for exemption — confirm your eligibility on the official admissions page.
English Language Requirements for SJTU International Applicants
The English proficiency test score is a threshold requirement — meeting the minimum does not make your English proficiency a strength. SJTU Global College courses are delivered entirely in English by internationally-experienced faculty. Students who are only at the minimum proficiency level will find the academic environment demanding. Aim to exceed the minimums to participate fully in seminars, group work, and faculty interactions.
Students from English-medium secondary schools — where all instruction is in English — may be eligible for an English proficiency test exemption. Eligibility criteria vary; contact the SJTU admissions office directly to confirm. For most international students, TOEFL 85+ or IELTS 6.0+ are the practical thresholds to plan for.
Practical guidance for international students
SJTU admits students to specific schools and programmes — unlike Harvard's broad college admissions model. The academic profile should be coherent with and directly relevant to the specific programme you apply for. Admissions criteria vary by school and programme.

Academic Requirements by Programme — What Different SJTU Tracks Expect
Well understood and valued. SJTU's admissions team is experienced in reading IB transcripts. The distinction between HL and SL courses is understood and acted upon — taking HL Mathematics (AA) is a positive signal; taking AISL is not equivalent for engineering tracks. EE and IA work provides supplementary research evidence.
Fully accepted and well understood. A-Level results — particularly Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry — are the primary basis for evaluation. Predicted grades from teachers are accepted. Three A-Level subjects at high grades in relevant disciplines is the expected profile.
Accepted and evaluated carefully. AP scores in core STEM subjects (Calculus BC, Physics C, Chemistry, CS) provide standardised evidence of academic rigour within a US-style curriculum. SJTU is familiar with US high school grading practices.
Gaokao results are one data point among several for Chinese-curriculum applicants who spent their secondary years in China. For internationally educated students of Chinese background, IB or A-Level results typically form the primary basis of evaluation.
SJTU is familiar with Indian board examinations. For CBSE or ISC applicants, strong subject scores in mathematics, physics, and chemistry are the primary academic signals. JEE Advanced performance, national Science Olympiad results, and competitive exam ranks provide meaningful supplementary evidence.
SJTU and International Education Systems — How Your Curriculum Is Evaluated

Building an Academic Profile for SJTU — What to Do at Each Stage
Academic Mistakes That Cost SJTU Applications — And How to Avoid Them
SJTU engineering programmes require advanced mathematical preparation. Taking IB Math AISL (Applications and Interpretation, Standard Level) instead of Math AA (Analysis and Approaches) or HL is one of the most consequential choices an applicant can make — SJTU explicitly values the highest mathematics level.
Choosing the lower mathematics track to protect GPA
TOEFL 85 and IELTS 6.0 are minimums, not competitive targets. A marginal English score, especially if combined with a weak written statement or an uncertain interview performance, creates a cumulative English-proficiency concern that can derail an otherwise strong application.
Submitting minimum-threshold English proficiency scores
SJTU awards scholarships based on comprehensive ranking — academic record plus interview performance. Failing to prepare for the interview means leaving scholarship money on the table, even if the academic profile is strong enough for admission.
Neglecting interview preparation for scholarship candidates
The CSC scholarship Round 1 deadline is December 15. The SGS and SJTU scholarship applications must be submitted alongside the main application. Missing these early deadlines eliminates the most generous funding options.
Missing scholarship deadlines by applying only in March
SJTU requires HSK Level 4 for graduation, and learning Mandarin takes time. Students who wait until arrival to begin Chinese language study will face significant pressure in their final years alongside demanding technical coursework.
Ignoring the HSK 4 graduation requirement
The following profiles represent the academic backgrounds of international students Tychr has helped gain SJTU admission or equivalent outcomes at leading Chinese and Asian universities. They illustrate the range of preparation that works — and what made each application compelling.
What Academic Profiles Tychr's SJTU-Admitted Students Had
IB Math HL (7), Physics HL (7), Chemistry HL (6). National Science Olympiad bronze medallist. Research internship at a university biomedical lab during Grade 11 summer.
The 7 in Math HL and the Olympiad medal were the decisive signals. The research internship provided a concrete story for the study plan and the interview.
A-Level Maths A*, Further Maths A*, Physics A. Independent coding project (GitHub, 200+ stars). UKMT Senior Mathematical Challenge Gold.
The combination of A* Further Maths and a demonstrable independent CS project made this applicant stand out in a CS pool dominated by strong grades without evidence of genuine initiative.
IB Math HL (6), Physics HL (7), Economics HL (7). Ran a small economic data analysis project on local labour market trends. Attended SJTU's virtual open day and connected with a faculty member before applying.
The IB score was at the competitive minimum, but the Economics-specific research project and the faculty connection made the study plan specific and credible — a significant differentiator.
Is a 3.4 GPA competitive enough for SJTU?
3.4 is the stated minimum — it is not a competitive target for popular programmes. For Global College, engineering, CS, and medicine, the realistic profile of admitted students sits closer to 3.7–4.0 on a 4.0 scale. Subject-specific performance in mathematics and sciences matters most.
The official IB band is 38, which is the competitive benchmark. For Global College and competitive engineering programmes, scores of 40+ are common among admitted students. IB Math HL at 5+ is a specific expectation for engineering tracks.
No preference is stated. Submit whichever test better reflects your quantitative ability. Both are accepted and neither is required for the main international track.
Can I apply to SJTU without SAT/ACT scores?
Yes, for the main SJTU international track. The test policy is officially optional. For Global College, SAT or ACT scores are strongly recommended and can affect scholarship ranking and TOEFL/IELTS exemption eligibility.
Is SJTU recognised by graduate schools in the US and UK?
Yes. SJTU is globally recognised, particularly for STEM disciplines. Graduates from SJTU engineering, CS, and biomedical programmes are competitive applicants at top US, UK, and European graduate schools. The QS #45 ranking and ARWU performance travel well internationally.
Chinese Government Scholarship covers tuition, housing, and stipend
~$27,000/year total vs. $80,000+ at comparable US universities
SJTU May Cost You Significantly Less Than You Think — Here's the Full Picture.
SJTU's combination of competitive tuition, a strong scholarship ecosystem (CSC, SGS, and SJTU institutional awards), and Shanghai's purchasing power makes it one of the most financially compelling elite university options for international students. Here's the complete breakdown.
What SJTU Actually Costs — The Full Annual Figure
SJTU International Student Cost of Attendance (Annual Estimates)
Health insurance (mandatory; CNY ~800/year)
At approximately USD 27,000 per year all-in, SJTU already costs roughly one-third of a comparable-ranked US university. Add the scholarship ecosystem — which can reduce costs to zero for strong applicants — and SJTU represents one of the most compelling value propositions in elite international higher education.
CSC scholarship covers tuition, accommodation, and provides a monthly living stipend.
Total annual cost without any scholarship aid.
SJTU's Aid Policy for International Students — What It Means and How It Works
Aid for international students at SJTU is primarily merit-based, distributed through the Chinese Government Scholarship (national programme), the Shanghai Government Scholarship (municipal programme), and SJTU's own institutional scholarships. Unlike US need-blind programmes, SJTU does not assess financial need — awards are based on academic achievement and interview performance.
Unlike US Ivy League universities with need-blind admission and need-based grants, SJTU's model is competitive merit scholarships. The best students — academically and in the interview — receive the most generous awards. This means preparation and strategy matter enormously: a strong study plan and interview can move a student from paying 50% of tuition to paying nothing.
SJTU's scholarship programme awards funding based on comprehensive ranking of applicants' academic performance and interview scores. There is no income assessment — a student from a wealthy family who performs at the top of the academic and interview ranking receives the same scholarship as one from a lower-income background.
Scholarship decisions are typically issued alongside or shortly after admissions decisions. Scholarship renewal is contingent on maintaining satisfactory academic performance. Scholarship status can be upgraded or downgraded based on in-university performance — another reason academic rigour matters throughout the degree.
SJTU operates within China's national higher education framework, which actively subsidises international student recruitment through the Chinese Government Scholarship programme. The government's stated policy goal is to attract high-quality international students to strengthen China's global academic standing — meaning the scholarship programme is structurally committed, not an annual budget decision.
Government Backing of International Scholarship
SJTU's own institutional scholarships are funded through the university's operational budget and external research revenues. As SJTU's global rankings and research income have grown, so has the institutional commitment to international student scholarship funding. The programme has expanded consistently over the past decade.
Why SJTU Can Offer Competitive Scholarships — The Structural Commitment
"SJTU's international scholarship programmes are designed to attract the most talented global students and build a genuinely international academic community."
SJTU's rise to QS #45 has been accompanied by systematic investment in international student recruitment, including scholarship funding. The institutional incentive to attract high-quality international students aligns with the financial interests of prospective students — a rare strategic alignment.
Visit csc.edu.cn or your home country's designated education authority
Confirm whether you are eligible to apply through the government channel or the university channel
The Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) is the most generous available. Check eligibility before starting your application — the CSC has its own December 15 (Round 1) deadline.
Global College: begin Common App profile; select SJTU (CEEB 6563)
Main track: register at apply.sjtu.edu.cn
Select 'Apply for Scholarship' within the application form
Scholarships at SJTU are applied for simultaneously with the admissions application — there is no separate scholarship form.
CSC Round 1: December 15. CSC Round 2: February 15. SJTU institutional scholarships: considered with Early Action (November 15) and Regular (March 31) applications.
Earlier applications receive earlier scholarship consideration. Scholarship funding pools reduce as applications come in.
SJTU Early Action (and institutional scholarship consideration)
The interview is explicitly part of the scholarship ranking process. A strong interview performance can move you from Second-Class (50% tuition) to First-Class (full tuition + stipend) scholarship.
All international applicants must demonstrate CNY 100,000 in a bank account. Prepare this documentation in advance — it is a common last-minute bottleneck.
Applying for SJTU Scholarships — The Process Step by Step
SJTU scholarships are applied for as part of the main admissions application — there is no separate funding application. Here is the step-by-step process to maximise your scholarship chances.
SJTU's approach to international student funding differs fundamentally from the US need-based model — but the outcomes for strong students can be equally generous. Understanding the system is the first step to accessing it.
SJTU's institutional scholarships are awarded on academic merit and interview performance, not family income. Any international student — regardless of financial background — can access full scholarship funding if they rank at the top of the applicant pool.
The Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) is funded by the Chinese government and available to citizens of most countries. Application is either through your home country's government authority or directly through SJTU. This scholarship fully covers tuition, accommodation, and provides a monthly living stipend.
The Shanghai Government Scholarship (SGS) is funded by the Shanghai Municipal Government and administered through SJTU. It covers full tuition and may include a living allowance. It is available to strong international applicants who are not receiving the CSC.
SJTU's internal First, Second, and Third-Class scholarships cover 100%, 50%, and 25% of tuition respectively. These are awarded based on the same comprehensive ranking process — academic record and interview — as admissions decisions.
SJTU Financial Aid for International Students — How the System Works
Full tuition + CNY 2,500/mo stipend + accommodation
Full tuition + CNY 2,500/mo stipend + CNY 1,000/mo accommodation subsidy
50% tuition + CNY 1,000/mo accommodation subsidy + insurance
Full tuition (may include living allowance)
What SJTU Scholarships Actually Look Like — Coverage by Award Level
SJTU Aid by Scholarship Level (Annual Estimates)
A student receiving the Chinese Government Scholarship or SJTU First-Class Scholarship pays effectively nothing for tuition and receives a living stipend. Even the SJTU Third-Class Scholarship (25% tuition) brings annual costs below USD 20,000 all-in — significantly less than any comparable-ranked Western university.
All figures are estimates. Scholarship awards are competitive and not guaranteed. CNY/USD conversions fluctuate. Confirm current amounts on gc.sjtu.edu.cn or global.sjtu.edu.cn.
SJTU scholarship ranking is based on comprehensive academic profile assessment plus interview score. There is no income assessment. The highest-ranking applicants receive the most generous awards regardless of financial background.
SJTU's scholarship programme is entirely merit-based — there is no need-based aid assessment. This is a fundamentally different model from US Ivy League need-blind programmes. Both models can deliver full funding, but via very different routes.
A student with an IB score of 38, a strong interview, and a compelling study plan may receive the SJTU First-Class Scholarship regardless of whether their family is wealthy or on a modest income. The ranking process looks at academic and interview performance only.
SJTU's philosophy is that international student recruitment serves the university's academic and global standing goals. Scholarship funding is an investment in the quality of the international student cohort — not a social equity mechanism. Strong students are commercially valuable to the university's reputation.
Families with significant financial need should prioritise the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), which is the most generous award and is available through government channels in many countries. The CSC is the closest equivalent to a US need-based scholarship in terms of comprehensive coverage.
For students with significant financial need
In-university academic performance matters for scholarship continuation. SJTU may upgrade or downgrade scholarship status based on annual GPA — strong performance can lead to better scholarship support in subsequent years.
SJTU Scholarships — Merit-Based, Not Need-Based
Beyond SJTU's internal scholarships and the CSC/SGS government programmes, international students may access additional external funding sources that can supplement or replace institutional aid.
External Scholarships and Additional Funding for SJTU Students
Tychr's scholarship identification process: as part of every SJTU admissions programme, Tychr identifies external scholarships relevant to the student's country of origin, academic field, and profile — including country-government awards, bilateral education funds, and field-specific scholarships.
Stacking scholarships: if you receive an external scholarship alongside an SJTU institutional scholarship, check the current policy on whether external awards reduce your SJTU institutional award. CSC and SGS scholarships generally stand independently.
Fully funded; apply through your home country's designated education authority or directly through SJTU
Applied for through SJTU; tuition coverage plus potential living allowance
Many governments have scholarship agreements with China for citizens pursuing study at C9 League universities — research your home country's education ministry
Individual SJTU schools and departments may offer additional awards — contact the specific school's international office
Country-specific government scholarships: many governments offer bilateral scholarship programmes for citizens studying in China at C9 League institutions. Coverage varies enormously — some are full-ride awards, others provide travel or living supplements. Tychr advises relevant students on applicable country-specific opportunities.
SJTU does not offer student loans as part of its international student financial aid package. This is structurally different from the US model, where many universities include loan components in financial aid offers. At SJTU, funding is either a scholarship award (which is not repaid) or the student's own funds.
A student who receives an SJTU First-Class Scholarship or CSC award receives that funding as a non-repayable grant — it covers tuition, accommodation, and provides a monthly stipend. No debt is incurred. When they graduate from SJTU, they leave with a degree and zero institutional loan obligations.
Students who do not receive scholarship funding must self-fund their studies. SJTU does not provide student loans. If you are self-funding, you must plan for the full cost of attendance (~USD 27,000/year) from personal or family savings, home-country bank loans, or equivalent financial resources.
Some students pursue home-country bank loans or government education loans to fund study at SJTU. These are external financial arrangements between the student and their home-country lender — not managed by SJTU. Ensure you understand the repayment terms before committing.
Given that SJTU's full scholarship model and self-funding model are the two primary routes, the strategic implication is clear: apply for every available scholarship as early and as seriously as possible. Scholarships at SJTU are not consolation prizes — they are the primary financial planning mechanism.
SJTU and Student Loans — What You Need to Know
Chinese regulations allow international students to work on campus in limited capacities during their studies. Off-campus employment requires a separate work permit and is generally difficult to arrange as a full-time student. Plan your budget without relying on part-time employment income as a primary financial resource.
Working While Studying at SJTU — What Is and Isn't Possible
Teaching assistant positions for undergraduate courses (competitive; language skills matter)
Research assistant positions in faculty laboratories (common for strong STEM students)
Library and administrative roles within SJTU
Tutoring services within the university community
University-affiliated cultural and student event coordination
On-campus employment at SJTU is available to international students in a limited range of roles. These positions are not part of a structured work-study programme — students seek them independently through faculty contacts, student services, or posted opportunities. Stipends are modest.
On-campus employment may cover CNY 500–2,000/month in supplementary income — useful for discretionary spending but not a meaningful budget component. For the majority of international students, the financial plan should be built around scholarship income and family support, not employment.
Employment for scholarship recipients is optional and supplementary. Students with CSC or First-Class scholarships who receive a monthly living stipend (CNY 2,500/month for undergraduates) typically find the stipend sufficient for basic living costs in Shanghai's dormitory environment.
$0 (scholarship) to $27,000 (self-funded)
UK government loan + institutional grants
Top US private (non-need-blind for internationals)
HECS-HELP for domestic; full fee for international
SJTU vs. Global Alternatives — Financial Aid and Cost Comparison
Unlike US Early Decision which locks students into a single offer, SJTU's Early Action is non-binding. You can compare SJTU's scholarship offer against other universities' offers before committing — a significant strategic advantage.
For families with significant financial constraints, SJTU's combination of lower base costs ($27,000/year all-in) and competitive scholarship availability makes it one of the most financially accessible elite university options globally. A student receiving the CSC or First-Class Scholarship pays effectively nothing at a QS top-50 university.
SJTU vs. Alternatives — What You Actually Pay Over Four Years
Illustrative Comparison: Competitive International Student
A student who receives the Chinese Government Scholarship at SJTU (#45 globally) pays nothing over four years — while paying $38,000–$45,000/year at Imperial College London (#8 globally). The sticker price is not the real price; the scholarship outcome is. For strong academic students who apply strategically, SJTU can be the most financially compelling elite university option available globally.
Unlike US university financial aid offices with formal appeals processes for need-based awards, SJTU's scholarship system is primarily a merit ranking process with limited formal appeals. However, there are several legitimate pathways to revisit your award.
Appealing or Improving an SJTU Scholarship Decision — When and How
SJTU's scholarship decisions are based on a ranked pool of applicants. A formal appeal of the ranking outcome is generally not possible. The more effective approaches are: (1) ensuring your initial application and interview are as strong as possible, (2) applying for parallel scholarship programmes (CSC, SGS) that are independent of the SJTU internal ranking, and (3) demonstrating exceptional academic performance in Year 1 to improve scholarship status for subsequent years.
Contact the SJTU International Students Office or Global College admissions office directly: gc-admissions@sjtu.edu.cn or gs.admission@sjtu.edu.cn
Submit a written request explaining any significant circumstances that may not have been reflected in your initial application
Provide documentation of any new academic achievements, awards, or changed circumstances
New academic achievements or awards were received after the initial application submission
Significant personal or family circumstances changed between application and the scholarship decision
There was an apparent processing error or missing document in the initial scholarship assessment
You received a more generous scholarship offer from a comparable institution and wish to discuss SJTU's commitment
SJTU's scholarship reconsideration: contact the relevant admissions office promptly after receiving your initial offer. Provide specific documentation. Response timelines vary — expect 2–4 weeks. Not all requests result in upgraded awards, but a well-documented request supported by genuine new evidence can be effective.
Understand the scholarship landscape early
Research the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), Shanghai Government Scholarship (SGS), and SJTU's own scholarship tiers. Identify which scholarships you are eligible for based on your citizenship and academic profile. Begin building the academic profile — particularly mathematics — that scholarship-level applications require.
Confirm CSC eligibility and application channel
Visit csc.edu.cn and your home country's education authority to determine whether you apply for CSC through the government channel or directly through SJTU. This affects the timeline and documents required. Confirm the current year's CSC Round 1 deadline (historically December 15).
Gather all financial guarantee documentation
Prepare proof of CNY 100,000 (~USD 13,700) in a bank account. This is required for all international applicants regardless of scholarship status. It is a common bottleneck — address it early. The funds remain in your account; this is a liquidity demonstration, not a payment.
Submit your application and scholarship selection
Apply via apply.sjtu.edu.cn (main track) or Common App (Global College). Select 'Apply for Scholarship' within your application. Apply for CSC by December 15 (Round 1) if eligible. Earlier submission improves scholarship competitiveness.
If invited for an interview, prepare intensively — the interview is explicitly part of scholarship ranking. Mock interviews with Tychr's SJTU specialists can improve your scholarship tier outcome. Review your study plan and be ready to discuss your academic interests in depth.
Planning for SJTU Costs and Scholarships — What to Do and When
SJTU Application Statements — Everything You Need to Know to Write Them Well.
A complete guide to SJTU's written application requirements — what each track asks for, how reviewers evaluate written materials, and the specific strategies that produce study plans and personal essays that admissions faculty remember.
SJTU Written Application Requirements — The Full Picture
SJTU's written application requirements differ fundamentally from US-style universities. There are two distinct tracks with different requirements. Understanding which track you are applying to — and what it specifically asks for — is the first step.
Shortlisted applicants — particularly for Global College, engineering, and medicine — may be invited for an online interview. An invitation is a positive sign and a scholarship ranking opportunity.
Graduate (Master's and PhD) applicants must submit a detailed research/study plan in addition to a personal statement. At the graduate level, these documents carry much greater weight than at undergraduate.
For applicants to the main SJTU international track (apply.sjtu.edu.cn): a concise document explaining your intended major, academic background, research interests, and specifically why SJTU. Written by faculty reviewers — substance and specificity matter more than style.
Global College applicants apply via Common App and must submit the standard 650-word personal essay. Any Common App prompt may be chosen. This is the primary written expression of who you are beyond grades and test scores.
The Common App Personal Essay for SJTU Global College — What It Needs to Accomplish
If applying to SJTU Global College via Common App, your 650-word personal essay is the primary opportunity to present yourself as a person beyond your academic credentials. Global College uses a holistic admissions process — the essay is read seriously.
Generic 'I want to be an engineer because engineering changes the world' essays that could be written by any applicant
Essays that simply describe achievements already listed in the activity section
Essays that focus on cultural tourism ('I want to experience Chinese culture') rather than academic or intellectual substance
Opening with a statistic or famous quote that the student does not own
A genuine, specific intellectual curiosity — what you find fascinating about your chosen field, and why
Evidence of how your mind works: the questions you ask, the problems you engage with independently
Authentic voice — the essay should sound like the person who wrote it, not like an admissions essay
A narrative that adds something meaningful to the picture created by grades, test scores, and recommendations
The Common App personal essay for Global College should reflect your analytical and technical curiosity — but it does not need to be about engineering or STEM directly. What it must do is reveal a genuinely curious, analytically capable mind that Global College would want in its classroom. SJTU Global College is looking for students who will contribute to a rigorous, internationally diverse technical community — your essay should demonstrate that you are that student.
The study plan for the main SJTU track should not describe generic academic interests. Name specific SJTU programmes, research centres, faculty (if known), or joint institutes — the Paris-SJTU Joint Engineering Institute, the SJTU-Michigan Joint Institute, or specific SJTU research labs. Generic praise for 'world-class research' without specifics is immediately detectable.
SJTU is a research university. Your study plan should articulate a specific research interest or direction — not just a career goal. What questions do you want to pursue? What problem are you drawn to? What experience has shaped this direction? Connect your background to a specific intellectual destination.
Admissions reviewers want to see that you have genuinely engaged with the decision to study in China and in Shanghai. This does not mean describing a desire to 'experience Chinese culture' — it means articulating why SJTU's specific academic and research environment is the right place for your particular goals.
Choosing What to Write — The Decision That Shapes Your SJTU Application
For the main SJTU track study plan, the content choice — what you write about and how specifically — is the single most important creative decision in your application. The wrong approach (generic, descriptive, ranking-focused) actively hurts your chances. The right approach (specific, academic, SJTU-oriented) significantly differentiates you.
Tychr's SJTU study plan process: 60-minute structured conversation exploring your academic interests, specific research areas you have engaged with, and the specific SJTU programmes, professors, or facilities that genuinely align with your direction — before a single word is written. Most applicants discover that their strongest study plan angle is not what they initially considered.
The Tychr Study Plan Brainstorming Process
Beginning the study plan with 'SJTU is ranked #45 in the world' or similar generic ranking praise
Writing primarily about career goals without connecting them to specific SJTU academic programmes
Describing a desire to 'experience China' as a primary motivation for choosing SJTU over other universities
Any approach that would apply equally well to Peking University, Tsinghua, or any other Chinese university without modification
Study Plan: Academic Goals and Programme Fit
SJTU's main international track requires a written study plan explaining your intended major, academic background, relevant achievements, research interests, and specific reasons for choosing SJTU and your chosen programme.
Lead with your intended major and your academic preparation for it. Then articulate a specific research interest or area of intellectual focus. Close by naming specific SJTU programmes, labs, professors, or joint institutes that align with your goals. 500–1,000 words; formal academic English; substance over style.
The Common App personal essay offers seven prompts covering challenges, beliefs, accomplishments, intellectual curiosity, problem-solving, identity, and a free topic. Global College applicants select any prompt and write up to 650 words.
Choose the prompt that allows you to reveal your most distinctive quality — your analytical mindset, your specific intellectual curiosity, or a formative experience that explains who you are as a thinker. Do not write about China or engineering directly if it feels forced; write what is genuinely true and distinctive about you.
Online Interview (Shortlisted Applicants)
Selected applicants are invited for an online video interview (20–40 minutes) with a panel of 2–3 SJTU faculty members. The interview assesses academic readiness, research motivation, and English communication ability.
Prepare to discuss your strongest academic subject in depth — not just what you studied, but what specifically interests you about it. Be ready to explain your study plan or personal essay in more detail. Know why SJTU specifically and have named specific programmes or research areas ready. Practise explaining a technical concept clearly in English.
Graduate (Master's and PhD) applicants must submit a personal statement and detailed research/study plan articulating a specific research question, methodology, and SJTU faculty alignment.
For PhD applicants: identify specific SJTU professors whose published work aligns with your research interest and mention them by name. Email potential supervisors before submitting — informal faculty interest significantly improves PhD admission and funding chances. The research plan is the dominant document at the graduate level.
SJTU's Application Statements — What to Write for Each Track
SJTU's written application requirements depend entirely on which track you are applying through. The materials are fundamentally different — a study plan for the main track is not the same as a Common App personal essay. Use the correct guidance for your track.
Written Application Mistakes to Avoid at SJTU
Writing a generic study plan that praises SJTU's rankings without naming any specific programme, research lab, faculty member, or joint institute — reviewers can identify this immediately
Treating the study plan like a US personal narrative essay — SJTU main-track reviewers are faculty members who expect academic purpose, not biographical storytelling
Submitting the same personal statement or study plan unchanged across multiple universities — SJTU-specific content is essential; what works for another university will not make you stand out at SJTU
Failing to explain why China and Shanghai make sense for your specific goals — saying you want to 'experience Chinese culture' is not a compelling academic reason
Writing more than the recommended length — concise and specific is always better; reviewers spend limited time per application
For Global College applicants: submitting a generic 'why I want to be an engineer' essay instead of a specific, personal narrative that reveals how you think
Ignoring the interview preparation entirely — the SJTU interview is part of the scholarship ranking process, not a formality
For graduate applicants: submitting a research plan that does not identify specific SJTU faculty by name — this is the most important differentiator in competitive PhD applications
Frequently Asked Questions About SJTU Application Statements
Does SJTU require supplemental essays like US universities?
Not in the US sense. For the main SJTU international track (apply.sjtu.edu.cn), the written component is a Study Plan — a purposeful academic document, not a supplemental personal essay. Only SJTU Global College (via Common App) requires a full personal essay in the US tradition.
How important is the study plan compared to my grades?
For undergraduate admissions on the main track, academic credentials dominate. The study plan is taken seriously — particularly for distinguishing between similarly qualified applicants and for scholarship ranking — but it cannot compensate for weak academic credentials. At the graduate level, the research plan carries significantly more weight.
Should I write my study plan in Chinese or English?
In English. SJTU states that all application materials should be in English. If you are applying to a Chinese-taught programme and the programme explicitly requests Chinese-language materials, confirm with the admissions office directly — but for the vast majority of international applicants, English is the requirement.
Can I reuse my Common App essay for the main SJTU track study plan?
No. They are fundamentally different documents. The Common App essay is a personal narrative revealing who you are as a person. The SJTU study plan is an academic statement of purpose — your intended major, academic preparation, research interests, and why SJTU specifically. Using one for the other will result in a weak document in either context.
What happens if I am invited for an interview but my English is not very strong?
Practise speaking about your academic interests in clear, direct English before the interview. SJTU does not expect native-speaker fluency — they want to see that you can communicate effectively in an academic English-language environment. Confidence, substance, and clear articulation matter more than accent. Prepare specific answers to likely interview questions and practise them aloud.
Is there a separate essay requirement for scholarship applications?
No. The scholarship application at SJTU does not involve a separate essay. The same admissions materials — your study plan or personal essay, plus the interview — form the basis of scholarship ranking. Ensure your study plan strongly conveys your research ambition and specific fit with SJTU, as it directly affects your scholarship tier.
For PhD applicants: should I contact SJTU professors before applying?
Yes — strongly recommended. A faculty member's informal interest or endorsement substantially improves PhD admission and funding chances. Email potential supervisors before submitting your application, referencing their published work specifically and explaining why your research interests align with theirs. Not all professors respond, but those who do can make a decisive difference.
How specific should I be about SJTU programmes in my study plan?
As specific as possible. The difference between 'I want to study engineering at SJTU because of its research reputation' and 'I am interested in the SJTU-Michigan Joint Institute's programme in electrical engineering, particularly the power systems research conducted by Professor X, which aligns with my independent study of...' is the difference between a generic application and a compelling one. Specificity is the most reliable differentiator.
