Ranked #57 by QS and #87 by Times Higher Education worldwide — PolyU is one of Asia's most internationally recognised applied-research universities, with several subject areas ranked top-30 globally.

PolyU's School of Hotel and Tourism Management is consistently ranked #1 globally for hospitality research. No school offers a stronger launchpad into luxury hospitality, tourism, and events management.

Industry-integrated curriculum, mandatory work placements in many programmes, and deep employer relationships translate to an 88% employment rate within months of graduation.

Hung Hom sits minutes from the financial district, the airport, and the border with mainland China. Students have internship access to global banks, tech firms, and trading houses without leaving the MTR network.

Credit Transfer for IB & A-Level Students

Students with strong IB or GCE A-Level results may receive up to 25% credit transfer on admission — effectively shortening the time to graduation or opening space for broader study.

PolyU's location and government ties in the Greater Bay Area offer unmatched access to China's economy and Asia-Pacific markets — an advantage few universities outside Hong Kong can replicate.

PolyU occupies a rare niche: a comprehensive research university that takes professional and applied education seriously at the highest level. Its faculty publish in world-leading journals while running industry-integrated programmes whose graduates are recruited by global firms the day they graduate. For international students who want a rigorous degree with genuine employment outcomes in the world's most dynamic region, PolyU is a compelling choice.

Admitted Student Profile — Benchmark Statistics

Overall acceptance rate — more selective for flagship programmes

https://www.polyu.edu.hk/study/ug/admissions/international-other-qualifications/international-other-qualifications-general

GCE A-Level: Grade B or above in 3 subjects

US High School: 3.3+ GPA with 80%+ average

Programme-specific subject requirements apply on top of the general minimum

PolyU requires strong academic credentials in a recognised international qualification. IB, A-Level, AP, ATAR, and other international qualifications are all accepted. The bar rises significantly for the most competitive programmes — Hotel Management, Computing, and Nursing receive far more applications than available places.

Exemption available if schooled entirely in English

Higher scores strengthen competitive programme applications

All major PolyU programmes are taught in English. Non-native speakers must submit IELTS or TOEFL results. Exemptions are considered case-by-case for students who completed secondary education in English — apply to admissions with supporting documents.

Engineering: Mathematics + Physics or Chemistry required

Nursing / Health Sciences: Biology strongly required

Design: Portfolio is a core admissions criterion

Hotel Management: Business or Economics helpful but not mandatory

PolyU is a disciplinary university — subject alignment to your intended programme matters as much as your overall score. A student applying to engineering without Mathematics is at a serious disadvantage regardless of other grades. Check each programme's specific requirements in the eAdmission portal.

PolyU Application Components — eAdmission Portal, Documents & Scholarship Section

PolyU uses its own direct eAdmission portal — no Common App or UCAS. The portal opens in September each year. Select your programme, complete all fields, and upload supporting documents directly.

Official transcripts from all secondary and post-secondary institutions attended. IB, GCE A-Level, AP, ATAR, CBSE, and other international qualifications are all accepted.

IELTS Academic (6.5+) or TOEFL iBT (80+). Students schooled entirely in English may apply for an exemption with supporting evidence.

A valid passport to verify identity and nationality for visa and admissions purposes.

Required for Design, Nursing, and some Health Sciences programmes. Specific requirements (word limit, format) are listed in the portal when you select your programme.

Some programmes request one or two letters from subject teachers or a school counsellor. Choose referees who know your relevant academic work well.

Complete this section within eAdmission to be considered for PolyU Entry Scholarships and Faculty Scholarships. No separate application is required — but not completing this section means no scholarship consideration.

PolyU uses its own eAdmission portal for all undergraduate international applicants. Unlike US universities, there are no Common App supplements. The process is direct: select your programme, upload your documents, complete the scholarship section, and submit. Apply in the Early Consideration Round (typically November) for priority scholarship consideration.

Write for the programme, not for a generic university

PolyU is applied-excellence focused. The personal statement readers want to see professional readiness and genuine interest in the discipline — not self-discovery storytelling. Open with what you plan to do after the degree.

Name the School of Hotel and Tourism Management's global rank, a specific faculty research area, PolyU's credit transfer policy, or the Greater Bay Area opportunity. Generic statements about 'prestigious universities' are immediately transparent.

Every experience mentioned should link to the programme. A hotel internship signals industry readiness. A maths competition signals quantitative capability for engineering. Make the connections explicit — don't leave admissions readers to infer them.

Do not leave the scholarship section blank

The scholarship section in eAdmission is your only formal channel for merit consideration. An empty section means no scholarship consideration regardless of your achievements. Document prizes, awards, and leadership roles with verifiable evidence.

PolyU Personal Statement — Writing for a Direct-Application, Applied University

PolyU does not publish a universal personal statement prompt. Programmes that require one ask for a statement of purpose addressing: your motivation for the programme, relevant academic background or experience, and career goals. Check the eAdmission portal for your specific programme's requirements.

Statement of Purpose / Personal Statement (Selected Programmes)

The scholarship section in eAdmission invites you to document prizes, competition placements, leadership roles, arts achievements, and community activities. This is evaluated for multi-faceted excellence alongside academic results.

Scholarship & Achievement Section (All Applicants)

Writing a generic statement that could apply to any university — PolyU's applied focus means they want to see why PolyU, why this specific programme, and what you will do with the degree after graduation.

What PolyU Admissions Officers Are Looking For

Strong Academic Results in Relevant Subjects

PolyU's first filter is academic performance. An IB score of 32+ or A-Level BBB is the stated minimum, but competitive programmes see admitted students well above these floors. Crucially, subject choices must be relevant to the programme — a high overall score without programme-relevant subjects is insufficient.

PolyU is a disciplinary, applied university. Unlike liberal arts universities that admit broadly, PolyU admits you to a specific programme and looks for evidence you are prepared for it — through your subject choices, your prior experiences, and your stated motivation.

All major programmes are delivered in English. IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 80 is the minimum, but competitive programmes attract applicants well above this bar. Strong English proficiency is non-negotiable for success in the curriculum.

Multi-Faceted Achievement (for Scholarships)

For scholarship consideration, PolyU evaluates the whole profile: prizes in internationally recognised competitions, leadership in student organisations, arts and sports achievements, and community engagement. This is distinct from the admission criteria — merit scholarship decisions explicitly factor in multi-faceted excellence.

Professional Motivation and Industry Awareness

PolyU's applied ethos means they value applicants who understand what they are entering. A Hotel Management applicant who has worked in hospitality, an Engineering applicant who has competed in design challenges, a Nursing applicant with healthcare volunteering — these profiles resonate.

PolyU evaluates international qualifications in context. An ATAR of 85 is the Australian minimum; an IB 32 is the minimum, not the competitive target for flagship programmes. Admissions considers the difficulty of your curriculum and the standards at your specific school.

PolyU's admissions process is grades-first and programme-specific. Every application is reviewed for academic rigour relative to the chosen programme's requirements, English proficiency, and — for scholarship candidates — multi-faceted excellence. Understanding what each element means for your specific programme is the foundation of a strong PolyU application strategy.

PolyU Scholarships & Financial Support for International Students

All figures are approximate USD conversions from HKD. Tuition is set annually by the Hong Kong government. Verify current figures on the official PolyU tuition fees page before planning your finances.

PolyU does not offer need-based financial aid to international students. All financial support for internationals is merit-based — scholarships awarded at the time of the admission offer for outstanding academic and multi-faceted achievement. Complete the scholarship section of eAdmission when you apply.

PolyU's financial support for international undergraduate students is entirely merit-based. There is no need-based financial aid programme for non-local students equivalent to what US universities offer. International students should plan on full tuition plus living costs, with merit scholarship as meaningful but competitive potential relief. The most competitive applicants — those with exceptional academic results plus prize-winning extracurricular achievements — are awarded up to 100% tuition coverage.

PolyU Merit Scholarship Tiers (Approximate Coverage)

Reserved for the most outstanding applicants — exceptional grades + multi-faceted achievement

Strong all-round applicants — competitive grades plus prizes or leadership

Early Round — Offers & Scholarship Decisions

Scholarship seats are allocated on a rolling basis — early applicants are first in line

Faster decision — receive your offer and scholarship outcome in December

More time to plan visa, accommodation, and pre-departure logistics

Demonstrates genuine commitment to your chosen programme

Application is reviewed when fewer files are competing for attention

Application must be complete by mid-November — less time to finalise documents

Final IB or A-Level results are not yet available — predicted grades are used

Less time to improve your IELTS or TOEFL score before applying

If deferred to Main Round, you wait until April with no other early-round outcomes

Why Apply in the Early Consideration Round

PolyU's Two Application Rounds — Strategy & Key Dates

PolyU offers two application windows for international students. The Early Consideration Round is strongly recommended for anyone seeking scholarship support — merit awards are made at the time of the admission offer and allocated on a rolling basis. By the Main Round, many scholarship pools are already committed.

Apply in the Early Consideration Round if you are targeting merit scholarship support — which for most international students is a financial necessity. Even if your final grades are not available, applying with strong predicted grades and a complete scholarship section in November puts you ahead of February applicants for every available award. The Main Round is adequate for those with strong funding who prioritise flexibility.

PolyU Interview — Who Gets One, What to Expect, How to Prepare

Name a specific aspect of PolyU's programme — a faculty research area, the SHTM's global rank, an industry partnership. Not rankings in general.

Why did you choose this specific PolyU programme?

Concrete is better than vague. A specific internship, a project, a competition — not 'I have always been interested in this field.'

What experience do you have related to your chosen field?

Show you have thought about Hong Kong's role in the region and how this degree positions you within it. Specific is better than generic.

Where do you see yourself five years after graduating from PolyU?

Be honest. An interesting failure with genuine reflection is far more compelling than a performed 'I turned a weakness into a strength' story.

Tell me about a challenge you faced and what you learned from it.

Show initiative. PolyU values applied preparation — anything that demonstrates you have already explored your intended field signals seriousness.

What have you done outside of school to prepare for this degree?

PolyU does not conduct interviews with all applicants. Interviews are invited for two groups: applicants with borderline academic profiles (IB 30–31 or equivalent) where the faculty wants to assess motivation and readiness before making a decision, and scholarship candidates where the committee wants to evaluate character and communication alongside the academic file. For international applicants, interviews are conducted online. If invited, prepare to discuss your programme motivation with specific detail — generic answers are easily identified and are not compelling at interview.

Modern en-suite rooms; popular with first-year international students

Community-focused living with common rooms and study spaces

Compact rooms; active hall committee and social events programme

10–15 min walk; shared rooms HK$5,000–7,000/month

MTR one stop away; slightly more affordable

Cheaper accommodation; 30–45 min MTR commute

PolyU's urban campus in Hung Hom, Kowloon, offers on-campus hall residence for a portion of students, with priority typically given to first-year and international students. Demand consistently exceeds supply — apply for hall accommodation at the same time you accept your offer. Unlike US residential colleges, PolyU halls are accommodation rather than academic communities, but each hall maintains an active social committee, student events programme, and common facilities. The real campus community is built through student societies, the student canteen, and the iconic campus walkways that connect the university's brutalist-modern architecture. Apply for halls early; many international students successfully secure on-campus housing by applying promptly after receiving their offer.

Accept your PolyU offer and immediately apply for on-campus hall accommodation via the student portal

Priority: first-year international students are given preference in most allocation cycles

Hall allocation is communicated separately from the offer — confirm your hall preference promptly

If unsuccessful for halls: search private accommodation in Hung Hom, To Kwa Wan, or Kowloon City

Budget HK$5,000–9,000/month for private accommodation near campus

The Greater Bay Area's economic expansion has opened additional pathways for PolyU graduates across the border in Shenzhen and Guangzhou.

Student Experiences at PolyU — What Our Students Say

Tychr helped me understand that PolyU was grades-first but scholarship-competitive-first. I had a strong IB score but hadn't documented my competition achievements at all. Completing the scholarship section properly changed my outcome — I received a 50% tuition scholarship in the early round.

The personal statement for PolyU's Hotel Management programme is genuinely different from a US-style essay. Tychr helped me frame my two years of part-time work in a restaurant in professional language — connecting it to the SHTM's specific research areas and industry partnerships. I was admitted in November.

I was applying from Nigeria and was not sure PolyU would consider my qualifications. Tychr confirmed that WAEC results were evaluated case-by-case and guided me through submitting additional academic evidence. I was admitted to the Nursing programme and received partial scholarship support.

Do I need to sit the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) as an international student?

No. International students are admitted via their home qualifications: IB Diploma, GCE A-Level, High School Diploma with SAT/ACT/AP, ATAR, or equivalent. The HKDSE route is for Hong Kong secondary school leavers only.

The primary medium of instruction for most programmes is English. Some Chinese language and culture courses use Cantonese or Mandarin. International students can study fully in English across all major disciplines. Cantonese is not required to study or live comfortably in Hong Kong.

Does PolyU offer campus housing for international students?

PolyU offers on-campus residence halls, but places are limited. Priority is often given to first-year and international students. Apply for halls immediately after accepting your offer. Many students live in private accommodation in nearby Hung Hom, To Kwa Wan, or Kowloon City.

What visa do I need to study in Hong Kong?

Most students will need a student visa (Student Entry for Study) issued by the Hong Kong Immigration Department. PolyU's admissions office assists admitted students with the visa application. Processing typically takes 4–6 weeks — begin the process as soon as you accept your offer.

Can I work part-time while studying at PolyU?

Full-time non-local students on a student visa may work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during vacation periods without a separate work visa, under current Hong Kong immigration rules. Confirm current rules with the Immigration Department before starting work.

Are SAT/ACT scores required for international applicants?

PolyU's test policy is optional for most international qualifications. Applicants with a North American High School Diploma typically need SAT 1190+ or ACT 24+ alongside their GPA. IB and A-Level students are not required to submit SAT/ACT scores.

Is PolyU recognised by employers outside Hong Kong?

Yes. PolyU's QS #57 global ranking and strong research profile mean the degree is recognised internationally, particularly across Asia, the UK, and by global firms with Asia-Pacific operations. The School of Hotel and Tourism Management's global #1 ranking gives SHTM graduates recognition in any hospitality market worldwide.

How do I contact the PolyU international admissions team?

Email: international.study@polyu.edu.hk | WhatsApp: +852 5514 3680. The Global Engagement Office also hosts online information sessions for prospective international applicants. Response times are typically 2–5 business days.

PolyU Academic Requirements — The Honest Breakdown for International Students

What academic profile do PolyU's admitted international students actually have? And what does PolyU's direct, programme-specific admissions process mean for students from IB, A-Level, AP, and other curricula?

PolyU states a minimum GPA of 3.3 on the US 4.0 scale for applicants using a North American High School Diploma. In practice, the competitiveness of your academic profile depends primarily on which programme you are applying to and whether your subject choices align with its requirements.

Minimum GPA (US scale) for High School Diploma applicants

PolyU and GPA — What the Benchmarks Actually Mean

A GPA of 3.3 is a floor, not a target. Competitive programmes — Computing, Hotel Management, Nursing, Design — attract applicants with significantly stronger profiles. Use the minimum as an eligibility threshold; the real question is how your profile compares to other applicants for your specific programme.

International students from systems without GPA (IB, A-Level, many Asian curricula) are evaluated on their qualification's own grading system. An IB score of 32 maps approximately to the 3.3 GPA minimum. A-Level BBB is the stated equivalent. PolyU admissions officers are experienced readers of all major international qualifications.

What this means for international students

PolyU does not explicitly weight grade trajectory, but a consistent upward pattern in a student's predicted grades supports an application, particularly where the overall score is close to the competitive threshold. A student improving from IB 28 predicted to 32 confirmed is in a stronger position than one declining from 34 to 32.

https://www.polyu.edu.hk/study/ug/admissions/international-other-qualifications/international-other-qualifications-general

PolyU evaluates international qualifications in the context of each applicant's educational system. Admissions officers are familiar with the full range of international credentials and evaluate academic performance relative to the standard expected within that system.

Every application is evaluated with reference to the specific qualification's grading norms and the programme's subject requirements. A student from a school that offers only limited A-Level subjects is evaluated differently from one at a school with full IB diploma access. PolyU's admissions process is transparent about what qualifications it accepts and what the minimum thresholds are — subject requirements are programme-specific and clearly listed in the portal.

How PolyU contextualises your academic record

For most programmes, subject alignment matters as much as overall score. An IB score of 38 without Mathematics is a weaker application to Engineering than an IB score of 33 with HL Mathematics and Physics. Choose your subjects with your intended programme's requirements in mind from Grade 9–10 onwards.

Subject alignment is as important as overall score

Programme-Specific Evaluation — How PolyU Reads Academic Performance

If your qualification is not listed on PolyU's official admissions page, contact the Global Engagement Office directly at international.study@polyu.edu.hk. PolyU explicitly states on its admissions page that it will consider qualifications not specifically listed — but early contact is essential to confirm your eligibility before applying.

For students with less common qualifications

SAT scores at PolyU apply only to applicants using a North American High School Diploma as their primary qualification. The minimum target is 1190 (out of 1600) alongside an 80%+ cumulative GPA average.

SAT at PolyU — When Required, What Score to Aim For

For STEM programme applicants using the High School Diploma route, a strong Math subscore is particularly important. Computing and Engineering programmes evaluate mathematical capability directly — aim for 650+ in Math.

If you are targeting PolyU via the High School Diploma pathway, aim for a SAT score clearly above 1190 to ensure competitiveness. A score at or barely above the minimum risks rejection in competitive programme cycles when IB and A-Level applicants set a high comparative bar.

The SAT Math subscore for STEM applicants

IB and A-Level holders: do not submit SAT scores unless specifically asked. Your qualification stands on its own. High School Diploma holders: a score above 1190 is required; aim for 1300+ to be competitive. Consider AP courses as an alternative pathway if SAT performance is inconsistent.

https://www.polyu.edu.hk/study/ug/admissions/international-other-qualifications/international-other-qualifications-general

PolyU ACT Data — Applicable to High School Diploma Applicants

Minimum composite (HS Diploma applicants)

PolyU does not publish a superscore policy. Submit your highest single-sitting composite ACT score alongside your High School Diploma and academic record.

PolyU accepts both SAT and ACT for High School Diploma applicants. Choose the test on which you score higher.

Careful reading comprehension and precise quantitative reasoning.

Speed across all sections plus comfort with Science data interpretation.

SAT vs. ACT for PolyU High School Diploma Applicants

If you hold an IB or A-Level qualification, do not take the SAT or ACT specifically for PolyU — it is not required. If you are applying via the High School Diploma pathway, take whichever test you are stronger on. A score of 1300+ SAT or 27+ ACT puts you meaningfully above the minimum.

PolyU's test policy is optional in a specific, context-dependent sense: standardised tests are required for some applicants (those using North American High School Diplomas) but not for others (IB, A-Level, ATAR holders). Understanding which category you fall into is the key strategic question.

PolyU's Test Policy — Who Needs to Submit and Who Doesn't

For IB, A-Level, and most international qualifications: no SAT or ACT is required. For North American High School Diploma holders: SAT 1190+ or ACT 24+ is required alongside an 80%+ cumulative GPA average. An alternative pathway exists for strong AP students: 80%+ GPA + Grade 3 or above in 5 AP subjects (without SAT/ACT) or Grade 3+ in at least 2 AP subjects (with SAT/ACT).

You hold a North American High School Diploma — SAT/ACT is required as part of your standard application.

Your score is 1300+ SAT or 27+ ACT — submitting strengthens a High School Diploma application.

You are applying with an unusual or less common qualification and want to supplement your academic record.

You hold an IB Diploma, GCE A-Level, ATAR, or similar recognised international qualification — SAT/ACT is not required.

Your SAT is below 1190 — submitting a below-minimum score actively hurts your application.

Many international students ask whether they should submit SAT/ACT scores to strengthen an IB or A-Level application to PolyU. The answer is no — these qualifications are evaluated on their own merits, and an unrequested test score neither helps nor is typically evaluated for these applicants. Focus on your primary qualification and English language test instead.

What PolyU values in IB applicants: overall score of 32+ is the minimum, but competitive programmes attract students scoring 35+. Subject choices matter as much as overall score — HL Mathematics is expected for engineering and computing. For borderline applicants (30–31), interviews are conducted at the faculty's discretion.

Often 35+ for Hotel Management, Computing, Nursing

HL Mathematics for STEM; HL Biology for Nursing; portfolio for Design

30–31 total may be considered for interview

A-Level applicants: Grade B in three A-Level subjects is the stated minimum. Programme-specific subject requirements apply — Engineering requires Mathematics and a science; Business programmes value Economics or Accounting. AS-Level results are considered as supplementary evidence of academic trajectory.

Mathematics + Physics or Chemistry required

Up to 25% of degree credits may be transferred for strong A-Level results

IB and A-Level Requirements at PolyU — Specific Benchmarks

https://www.polyu.edu.hk/study/ug/admissions/international-other-qualifications/international-other-qualifications-general

AP courses are relevant to PolyU applicants in two scenarios: as a supplement to a North American High School Diploma (replacing or reducing the SAT/ACT requirement), or as the basis for credit transfer on admission to the four-year degree.

80%+ high school GPA + Grade 3 or above in at least 2 AP subjects (with SAT/ACT), OR Grade 3+ in 5 AP subjects (without SAT/ACT). Strong AP scores in relevant subjects effectively replace the standardised test requirement for High School Diploma holders.

PolyU awards credit transfer for strong IB and A-Level results — and this can extend to strong AP results for High School Diploma applicants. Up to 25% of degree credits may be recognised, shortening the effective degree timeline or creating space for additional courses.

For Engineering: AP Calculus BC + AP Physics C signal quantitative readiness. For Computing: AP Computer Science A + AP Statistics. For Business: AP Macroeconomics + AP Statistics.

PolyU awards credit transfer for strong AP results, allowing students to skip introductory courses and advance more quickly in their degree. Apply for credit transfer at the time of admission with your AP score reports.

Students from non-US schools who do not have access to AP courses are not disadvantaged. IB and A-Level qualifications are evaluated on an equivalent basis. Do not artificially pursue AP courses if they are not offered at your school.

PolyU evaluates not just your overall qualification score, but the rigour and relevance of the subjects you chose. This is particularly important for programmes with specific subject requirements — a high overall score in irrelevant subjects is not equivalent to a moderate score in the right ones.

Academic Rigour at PolyU — Subject Choices Are the Key Variable

A strong overall score in subjects irrelevant to your programme is weaker than a competitive score in the subjects your programme requires.

Subject rigour is evaluated relative to your school's curriculum and the programme you are applying to. PolyU does not expect students to take subjects their school does not offer, but it does expect them to choose the most relevant subjects available within their curriculum. A student who chose HL Mathematics and HL Biology for a Nursing application demonstrates preparation; a student who chose HL Business Studies and HL Psychology does not — regardless of overall IB score.

For most PolyU programmes, subject alignment is a binary qualification criterion: either you have the required subjects or you don't. Programme-specific requirements are listed in the eAdmission portal for each programme. Review them before choosing your IB or A-Level subjects in Grade 10–11.

An IB student with HL Mathematics (Analysis & Approaches), HL Physics, and HL Chemistry demonstrates the academic preparation PolyU's engineering faculty values — and the same profile strengthens a computing application significantly. This combination is not common and signals genuine academic ambition in a relevant direction.

What PolyU is looking for in STEM applicants

Each PolyU programme has distinct subject preparation expectations. The sections below describe what faculty admissions reviewers consider strong preparation — not just the minimum, but the profile that stands out.

Subject Preparation by Programme — What PolyU Expects

HL Mathematics (Analysis & Approaches preferred) or A-Level Mathematics is required. Further Mathematics at A-Level or strong Mathematics A at HL (7 or 6) strengthens applications significantly. Competition mathematics experience (Olympiad participation, AMC/AIME) is a meaningful differentiator for the most competitive applicants.

HL Biology or A-Level Biology is strongly required. Chemistry alongside Biology significantly strengthens Nursing and Allied Health applications. Prior clinical volunteering or healthcare work experience — even informal — adds credibility to the application and is referenced positively in personal statements and interviews.

A portfolio is the core admissions criterion for School of Design programmes. Grades matter, but the portfolio demonstrates creative thinking, craft, and range. Begin building a portfolio in Grade 10. Include 10–20 pieces across different media; curate for quality. Art and Design at A-Level or Visual Arts at HL in IB provides relevant preparation.

English language proficiency is a formal admission requirement at PolyU. All major programmes are delivered in English, and the university requires documented proof of proficiency from non-native speakers unless an exemption is granted.

English Language Requirements for International PolyU Applicants

The minimums are floors, not targets. Competitive programmes attract admitted international students well above IELTS 7.0. Submitting a score at or just above the minimum does not strengthen an already borderline application — it simply meets the eligibility threshold.

Students who completed their secondary education entirely in English (where the primary medium of instruction was English throughout) may apply for an exemption from the English proficiency test requirement. Contact admissions with supporting evidence. IB students at English-medium schools are typically strong candidates for this exemption.

Exemption from the English proficiency requirement

https://www.polyu.edu.hk/study/ug/admissions/international-other-qualifications/international-other-qualifications-general

PolyU admits students to specific programmes, not to the university broadly. The table below describes the key academic signals for each major programme area.

Math Olympiad; competition achievement; personal projects

Engineering competitions; robotics; design challenges

Civil / Mechanical / Electrical Engineering

Hospitality work experience; language skills; business coursework

Any strong qualification; Business/Economics helpful

Healthcare volunteering; first-aid certification; clinical observation

HL Biology required; Chemistry strongly recommended

CFA awareness; financial modelling projects; Accounting coursework

Creative portfolio; art exhibition experience; design competitions

Portfolio (required); Visual Arts or Art/Design at HL/A-Level

Lab research; science competitions; extended science projects

Academic Requirements by PolyU Programme — What Each Area Expects

Very well understood and widely used by Hong Kong and international applicants to PolyU. Admissions officers are experienced IB readers. An IB score of 32 is the stated minimum; 35+ is the competitive target for most sought-after programmes. Subject choices at HL are evaluated carefully relative to the programme's requirements. The Extended Essay and TOK certificate are noted but do not carry explicit weight in the minimum calculation.

Equally well understood. Grade B in three A-Level subjects is the minimum; programme-specific subjects are required on top. A-Level Mathematics is particularly important for STEM programmes. Predicted grades (for applicants still in school) are accepted alongside a request for confirmed results post-examination.

GCE A-Level / Cambridge International A-Level

ATAR of 85 or above is the stated Australian minimum. The ATAR is well understood by PolyU admissions. Subject study scores are considered for programme-specific requirements. An ATAR of 85 maps approximately to the general minimum; competitive programmes typically attract applicants with ATAR 90+.

Evaluated case by case. PolyU accepts CBSE and ISC results and is familiar with Indian board grading. Because grade distributions in CBSE/ISC differ significantly from IB, a CBSE result of 90%+ in relevant subjects is typically the competitive baseline. Students with JEE preparation or Olympiad results can note these in the scholarship section.

Students from the Chinese national curriculum applying as international students (non-HKDSE) are typically evaluated on their Gaokao results or, increasingly, on IB or A-Level qualifications completed alongside Chinese secondary study. Contact admissions early if applying on a Chinese curriculum basis.

PolyU and International Education Systems — How Your Curriculum Is Evaluated

Research your target PolyU programme's subject requirements early — not in Grade 11.

Engineering / Computing: lock in HL Mathematics (AA) and a science in IB, or A-Level Mathematics.

Nursing: ensure Biology is in your programme — at HL if possible.

Design: begin a creative portfolio now. This is a four-year project, not a Grade 12 rush.

Hotel Management: prioritise language breadth and any business electives.

Build relevant experience alongside academics

PolyU scholarship committees value multi-faceted achievement — prizes, competition placements, leadership.

Hotel Management: any hospitality work experience, even part-time or unpaid.

Nursing: hospital or clinic volunteering, first-aid certification.

Engineering: robotics competition, coding challenges, science fairs.

Design: enter competitions, exhibit work, grow the portfolio.

Sit IELTS or TOEFL no later than end of Grade 11 — this gives time to resit if needed.

Target IELTS 7.0+ or TOEFL 95+ — above the minimum, not at it.

If schooled entirely in English, prepare the exemption documentation now.

Early Consideration Round deadline is typically mid-November.

Complete the scholarship section of eAdmission fully — document all achievements.

If required, prepare and submit your personal statement by this deadline.

Apply with predicted grades; confirmed results can be submitted post-examination.

Building an Academic Profile for PolyU — What to Do at Each Stage

Academic Mistakes That Cost PolyU Applications — And How to Avoid Them

PolyU is a disciplinary university. An IB score of 38 with no Mathematics is a weaker Engineering application than an IB score of 33 with HL Mathematics and Physics. Check programme requirements before choosing your subjects in Grade 10.

Choosing subjects without checking programme requirements

For High School Diploma applicants, a SAT score below 1190 submitted to PolyU signals academic risk. If your score is below this threshold, explore the AP pathway alternative rather than submitting a below-minimum test score.

Submitting a below-threshold SAT/ACT score

Scholarship awards are made at the time of the admission offer for the early round — not separately, not later. Applying in February means most merit awards are already committed. The early round is effectively mandatory for scholarship-dependent applicants.

Applying in the Main Round when you need scholarship support

IELTS 6.5 is the minimum, not the target. Competitive programmes attract admitted international students above IELTS 7.0. A bare-minimum score does not strengthen a borderline application — plan to exceed the minimum, not just reach it.

Targeting the minimum English score rather than a competitive one

The scholarship section in eAdmission is the only formal channel for merit scholarship consideration. Students who leave it incomplete receive no scholarship evaluation, regardless of their achievements. Document everything: prizes, competition results, leadership roles, community activities.

Leaving the scholarship section in eAdmission incomplete

The following profiles represent the academic backgrounds of students Tychr has helped gain PolyU admission or strong Asia-Pacific university outcomes. They illustrate the range of profiles that succeed and what made each application compelling.

What Academic Profiles Tychr's PolyU-Admitted Students Had

HL Maths AA (6), HL Physics (7), HL Chemistry (6). IOAA participant. Robotics competition regional finalist. Applied to Civil Engineering.

IB 36 · IELTS 7.5 · 50% Tuition Scholarship

Subject alignment and the robotics achievement elevated the application above the typical IB 32–34 Engineering applicant. The scholarship section was fully documented with competition certificates.

A-Level Business Studies (A), Economics (B), Mandarin Chinese (A). Two years part-time work in a hotel restaurant. Applied to Hotel & Tourism Management.

A-Level ABB · IELTS 7.0 · Admitted Early Round

A-Level grades were at the minimum, but the hospitality work experience and a well-framed personal statement that demonstrated genuine industry understanding made the application compelling. Admitted in November.

CBSE 92% overall, 96% in Biology and Chemistry. Hospital volunteering 120+ hours. Applied to Nursing.

CBSE 92% · IELTS 6.5 · Cultural Ambassador Scholarship

Strong Biology and Chemistry grades combined with substantial volunteering evidence made a compelling Nursing application despite the qualification being evaluated case-by-case. Cultural Ambassador Scholarship awarded on admission.

IB 32 is the published minimum. Competitive programmes — Hotel Management, Computing, Nursing — typically attract admitted students above IB 35. An IB 32 application to a competitive programme is at the margin; subject alignment and multi-faceted achievement become more important at this score.

For IB and A-Level applicants: no. SAT and ACT are required only for North American High School Diploma holders. IB and A-Level qualifications are evaluated on their own merits without requiring supplementary standardised tests.

Do IB students need to submit SAT or ACT scores?

Yes — if the university can confirm your secondary education was conducted primarily in English. Contact the Global Engagement Office with supporting documentation (school transcripts showing English medium, principal's letter). Approval is case-by-case.

Can I get an exemption from IELTS or TOEFL?

Apply as early as possible after receiving your offer. First-year and international students are given priority in most cycles, but demand exceeds supply. Many international students successfully secure on-campus housing if they apply promptly.

How competitive is on-campus housing at PolyU?

Credit transfer of up to 25% of degree credits is available for strong IB or A-Level results. Apply at the time of admission with your subject scores. It is not applied retroactively and must be requested during the admissions process.

How does PolyU's credit transfer policy work?

All financial support for internationals is merit scholarships — no need-based aid

Scholarships awarded at offer time — early round applicants have priority

What PolyU Actually Costs — And How Scholarship Support Works for International Students.

PolyU's annual cost for international students is approximately $36,880 USD. Unlike US universities, there is no need-based aid — all financial support is merit scholarship, awarded at the time of your offer for the early round. Here is the complete cost picture and how to maximise your scholarship chances.

What PolyU Actually Costs — The Full Annual Figure

PolyU Cost of Attendance — Annual Estimate (International Students)

Cost of Living (accommodation, food, transport, personal)

Hong Kong is one of the world's most expensive cities, and this is reflected in living costs. The tuition itself (~$25,640/yr) is moderate by global standards — it is the cost of living that drives the total significantly higher. Students who secure on-campus housing may reduce living costs modestly.

Living costs remain; tuition is covered for outstanding scholarship recipients.

The full annual cost for an international student with no merit scholarship support.

https://www.polyu.edu.hk/study/ug/admissions/international-other-qualifications/international-other-qualifications-tuition-fees

PolyU's Financial Support Policy for International Students

PolyU does not operate a need-based financial aid programme for international undergraduate students. The Hong Kong government's student finance schemes (TSFS, FASP) are available to Hong Kong permanent residents only. International students should plan on full cost — and compete for merit scholarship support through the eAdmission scholarship section.

All Support for International Students Is Merit-Based

Unlike Harvard or Princeton (which meet 100% of demonstrated financial need globally), PolyU awards scholarship support based entirely on academic excellence and multi-faceted achievement — not financial need. A student from a low-income family who scores IB 32 receives the same financial consideration as a student from a high-income family at the same score.

Merit-based financial support at PolyU means: scholarships awarded at the time of admission based on academic results (IB, A-Level, GPA) and documented multi-faceted excellence (competition prizes, leadership, arts/sports achievements). These scholarships are announced with the offer letter and are renewable subject to academic standing.

How PolyU Differs from US Need-Based Systems

Once admitted, scholarship recipients are notified of their award level (typically 50% or 100% tuition coverage). Scholarships are renewable year-to-year subject to maintaining a specified GPA threshold. Students who lose scholarship eligibility due to academic performance must revert to paying full tuition.

What Happens After Admission — Scholarship Renewal

PolyU operates as a publicly funded university under the University Grants Committee (UGC) of Hong Kong. The tuition rate for government-funded undergraduate programmes is set by the Hong Kong government and applies equally to local and international students — there is no international premium on the stated tuition fee. This government-set structure is what keeps PolyU's tuition competitive by global standards.

PolyU has progressively expanded its merit scholarship programme for international students over the past decade, adding Faculty Scholarships, the Cultural Ambassador Scholarship, and expanding the 100% tuition award pool. The trajectory has been toward greater support for outstanding international applicants, not less.

Why PolyU's Tuition Is Structured This Way

"PolyU is committed to providing quality education for the betterment of Hong Kong, the nation, and the world."

PolyU's QS #57 ranking and THE #87 ranking reflect its standing as one of Asia's leading applied-research universities. Its tuition, set by the Hong Kong government's UGC structure, is significantly lower than comparable-ranked private universities globally.

Applying for PolyU Scholarship Support — The Process Step by Step

PolyU scholarship consideration is built into the main application — there is no separate financial aid application. But the scholarship section within eAdmission must be completed fully. Here is the complete step-by-step process.

https://www.polyu.edu.hk/study/ug/admissions/international-other-qualifications

PolyU's scholarship programme for international students has expanded significantly in recent years. Here is what it actually provides — and what it does not.

Merit scholarships of 50% or 100% tuition coverage for outstanding academic and multi-faceted achievement. The Cultural Ambassador Scholarship (up to HK$60,000/year) for eligible international students admitted with IB, A-Level, or equivalent qualifications. Faculty-specific scholarships from individual schools (SHTM, Faculty of Engineering, etc.).

Need-based financial aid. No demonstrated-financial-need calculation, no CSS Profile equivalent, no income-band scholarship table. International students cannot access Hong Kong government student finance schemes (TSFS, FASP) — these are for Hong Kong permanent residents only.

Scholarship committees evaluate academic results alongside the scholarship section of eAdmission. 'Multi-faceted excellence' is the stated criterion — this encompasses prizes in internationally recognised competitions, leadership positions, arts and sports achievements, and community service. The stronger and more documented your extracurricular profile, the better your scholarship prospects.

Scholarship awards are denominated in Hong Kong dollars (HKD), which is pegged to the USD. The tuition and scholarship figures quoted in USD throughout this guide use an approximate conversion. Verify current HKD figures directly with PolyU. Exchange rate risk for non-USD families should be factored into cost planning.

PolyU Scholarship Support — What Different Award Levels Mean for Annual Cost

A 100% tuition scholarship reduces annual cost to living expenses only (~$18,000/yr). A 50% scholarship brings annual cost to approximately $24,000. Without scholarship, the full annual cost is approximately $36,880. For a four-year degree, the difference between no scholarship and a 100% scholarship is approximately $102,560.

All figures are approximate USD conversions. Verify HKD amounts directly with PolyU's Finance Office. Living costs vary significantly based on accommodation type and lifestyle.

PolyU scholarships are applied against tuition only — they do not cover living costs. A 100% tuition scholarship covers approximately $25,640/yr, leaving living costs of approximately $18,000/yr as the remaining obligation.

PolyU's scholarship system is entirely merit-based. All scholarships are awarded on academic excellence and multi-faceted achievement — there is no need-based calculation.

A student with an IB 45 and multiple international competition prizes from a wealthy family and a student with the same profile from a modest-income family are evaluated identically for PolyU scholarships. The award is based entirely on achievement, not financial circumstances.

PolyU's philosophy is that outstanding international talent enriches the university and Hong Kong as a whole. Scholarships are designed to attract the most capable international applicants — not to address financial inequality. For need-based support, US universities with robust aid programmes (MIT, Princeton, Harvard, Columbia, etc.) are more appropriate targets.

Why PolyU uses merit-only for internationals

The Cultural Ambassador Scholarship is the broadest scholarship — available to all eligible international qualification holders who are admitted and are automatically considered. It provides up to HK$60,000 per year and is renewed subject to academic performance. It is the most accessible PolyU scholarship for strong-but-not-exceptional applicants.

The most accessible scholarship — Cultural Ambassador

Individual faculties maintain their own scholarship funds for international students. These are smaller pools and competition varies by faculty. SHTM scholarships are among the most competitive given the programme's global reputation. Applying early and completing the scholarship section fully improves access to these faculty-level awards.

Faculty scholarships — programme-level awards

PolyU Scholarships — What Exists and Who Qualifies

Beyond PolyU's internal merit scholarships, a number of external organisations and government schemes provide funding for international students attending Hong Kong universities. Researching these in parallel with the PolyU application can meaningfully supplement financial planning.

External Scholarships and Funding Sources for PolyU International Students

Tychr maintains awareness of country-specific scholarship programmes relevant to students attending Hong Kong universities. As part of our PolyU admissions support, we identify external funding sources relevant to each student's country of origin and field of study.

External scholarship stacking: External scholarships awarded to PolyU students may interact with PolyU's internal scholarship terms. Clarify with PolyU's scholarship office whether external awards affect internal scholarship renewal conditions.

Merit-based scholarships for students at Hong Kong universities — available to international students in some schemes. Research current offerings at hkjcef.com.

For students from Belt and Road countries — covers tuition and living allowance. Administered by the Hong Kong government through HKSAR institutions. Check eligibility by country.

Administered by the China Scholarship Council. Covers tuition, accommodation, and living allowance at mainland Chinese and some Hong Kong universities. Requires application through Chinese diplomatic missions.

Country-of-origin government scholarships

Many governments offer scholarships for citizens attending top-ranked Asian universities. Research your home country's outbound scholarship landscape — India (ICCR), Indonesia (LPDP), Malaysia (JPA), Thailand (ODOS), and others have relevant programmes.

Hong Kong government scholarships: The HKSAR government administers scholarship schemes including the Belt and Road Scholarship and various targeted regional schemes. Eligibility criteria and availability change annually — consult the Student Finance Office and the official HKSAR scholarship portal for current offerings.

PolyU does not offer institutional student loans to international undergraduate students. There is no PolyU loan programme. International students must finance their degree through family resources, merit scholarships, external funding, and permitted part-time work income.

Unlike US universities where a significant portion of international students finance their degrees through a combination of grants and institutional or government loans, PolyU international students have no access to institutional loan products. The full cost of attendance must be covered by other means.

No institutional loan product for internationals

Hong Kong immigration permits full-time non-local students to work up to 20 hours per week during term time without a separate work visa. This represents meaningful supplementary income — particularly for students in hospitality programmes with industry placements. Many PolyU students work part-time in hotels, retail, tutoring, or on-campus positions.

Some commercial banks in Hong Kong and students' home countries offer education loans. Eligibility, interest rates, and terms vary significantly. If considering a commercial education loan, compare options in your home country (where you may have established banking history) against Hong Kong alternatives.

US federal student loans (FAFSA-based) are not available for international study at PolyU. Students who are US citizens attending PolyU should check with the US Department of Education whether any federal loan programmes extend to accredited international institutions.

PolyU and Student Loans — What Is and Isn't Available to International Students

PolyU does not operate a formal US-style work-study programme. However, Hong Kong immigration rules permit significant part-time work for student visa holders, and many PolyU programmes incorporate paid industry placements.

Part-Time Work and Industry Placements at PolyU

Hotel and tourism industry placements (mandatory in SHTM — often converts to employment offer)

On-campus student assistant roles in faculties, libraries, and administrative departments

Research assistant positions with faculty labs (Years 2–4)

Private tutoring in Cantonese, English, or academic subjects

Retail and hospitality roles in Hong Kong's extensive service sector

Design internships and freelance work for School of Design students

Hong Kong immigration rules allow full-time non-local student visa holders to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time (no hours cap) during scheduled vacation periods, without a separate work visa. No employer sponsorship is required — a valid student visa is sufficient. Students must be enrolled full-time.

20 hours per week at typical Hong Kong part-time rates (HK$50–80/hour) generates approximately HK$40,000–60,000 per year. This covers a significant portion of living expenses for budget-conscious students. Hotel Management students with mandatory industry placements typically receive remuneration for those placements.

Part-time work is entirely the student's choice — PolyU does not require or formally include an employment component in financial planning. It is a real option that meaningfully offsets living costs for students who choose to use it.

PolyU vs. Regional Peers — Financial Aid Comparison

Unlike US Early Decision systems, there is no PolyU early commitment that limits your ability to compare offers. Applying early at PolyU improves scholarship outcomes without obligating you to attend — you can still accept offers from other universities.

For families with significant financial need, PolyU's merit-only scholarship model is less advantageous than need-blind US institutions like Harvard or MIT. However, for high-achieving students with strong extracurricular profiles, a 100% tuition scholarship brings PolyU's net cost to approximately $18,000/year — competitive with many alternatives in the region.

Need-blind, full-need, no loans (family income $75K)

PolyU vs. Alternatives — What You Actually Pay

For a student who wins a full tuition scholarship, PolyU's four-year cost (~$72,000 for living expenses) is competitive with NUS and significantly below a UK Russell Group or Australian Group of Eight degree. The scholarship application is therefore the most financially important part of the PolyU application process.

PolyU does not operate a financial aid appeals process in the US sense — there is no demonstrated-need calculation to appeal. However, if you believe your scholarship offer does not reflect your full achievement profile, or if your circumstances change after admission, there are steps you can take.

Addressing PolyU Scholarship Decisions — Options and Process

PolyU scholarship decisions are primarily based on the information you provided in the eAdmission scholarship section. If you submitted incomplete documentation, subsequent correction is unlikely to change the decision for a given application cycle. The most effective approach is to document everything comprehensively at the time of applying.

Contact the Scholarships and Financial Assistance Team via the Global Engagement Office

Confirm whether your scholarship section was fully reviewed and whether any additional evidence would be considered

If your circumstances have changed materially since admission (family financial hardship, etc.), inquire about hardship funds administered through the Student Affairs Office

For faculty scholarships, contact your specific faculty's administrative office directly

Your scholarship section contained an error or omitted significant achievements

You received a major prize or award after submission that was not included

Your family's financial circumstances have changed materially since receiving your offer

You were awarded a lower-tier scholarship and believe your profile supports a higher award

PolyU's response timeline for scholarship-related queries is typically 2–4 weeks. Decisions are not guaranteed to change, but a well-documented follow-up that highlights genuinely omitted achievements can be worth submitting. Contact international.study@polyu.edu.hk for the relevant team contact.

Research the true cost of attendance early

Understand that PolyU's full annual cost is approximately $36,880 USD. Scholarship support is merit-based and competitive. Research the Cultural Ambassador Scholarship, PolyU Entry Scholarship, and any country-specific government scholarships in your home country that support study in Hong Kong. Use this understanding to inform your four-year financial plan.

Build your multi-faceted excellence profile

PolyU's scholarship committee evaluates academic results alongside documented achievements. Begin collecting verifiable evidence: competition certificates, leadership documentation, awards. The scholarship section in eAdmission requires specific details and evidence — create a running achievements document now.

Research external scholarships in parallel

Investigate Belt and Road Scholarships, Hong Kong government scholarship schemes, and your home country's outbound scholarship programmes. Some of these have early application timelines and separate processes from the PolyU application.

Complete the scholarship section in eAdmission thoroughly

The scholarship section is embedded in the main application form. Do not rush it. Document every prize, every competition, every leadership role with specific dates, organisations, and outcomes. Attach certificates where the portal allows. This section determines your scholarship outcome — treat it with the same care as an essay.

Scholarship awards are made on a rolling basis at the time of the admission offer. Early round applicants receive scholarship consideration before the Main Round pool has been reduced. If scholarship support is important to your financial plan, the early round is not optional.

Planning for PolyU Costs — What to Do and When

PolyU does not use the US Common Application or UCAS. International students apply directly through PolyU's eAdmission online portal. For most programmes there are no supplemental essays. What matters most is the completeness and quality of your application — your credentials, your personal statement where required, and your scholarship section. This guide explains how to make every element of the PolyU direct application as strong as it can be.

PolyU uses its own eAdmission portal for all undergraduate international applicants. There is no Common Application, no Coalition App, and no UCAS. The process is direct: select your programme, upload your documents, complete the scholarship section, and submit.

Some programmes — particularly in Design, Nursing, and certain Health Sciences — require a personal statement or portfolio as an additional supporting document. These requirements are displayed within eAdmission when you select your specific programme. For programmes that do not list a personal statement as a requirement, one is not expected and will not make a material difference to your admission outcome.

This is a grades-first system. Your academic results carry the most weight. A strong personal statement can differentiate you in competitive programmes or when scholarship decisions are close-run — but it rarely compensates for weak grades or subject misalignment.

https://www.polyu.edu.hk/study/ug/admissions/international-other-qualifications

The PolyU Personal Statement — Where Required

PolyU does not publish a universal personal statement prompt. Programmes that require one typically ask for a statement of purpose or personal statement submitted via eAdmission as a PDF upload. The document should address: your motivation for the programme, relevant academic background or experience, and career goals.

Statement of Purpose / Personal Statement

Programmes in Design, Nursing, and some Health Sciences require applicants to submit a personal statement or supporting letter as part of the application. The specific prompt, word limit, and format are listed within the eAdmission portal for each programme. Check your specific programme's additional requirements when you select it in the portal.

Frame your statement around three elements: (1) WHY this specific PolyU programme — reference specific faculty strengths, research areas, or industry links that match your goals; (2) WHAT you bring — academic preparation plus any relevant practical experience; (3) WHERE you are heading — a realistic and specific picture of how this degree serves your career. Target 500–700 words unless the portal specifies otherwise. Avoid generic ambition statements ('I have always loved science') — ground everything in specific, verifiable experience.

https://www.polyu.edu.hk/study/ug/admissions/international-other-qualifications/2025/international-other-qualifications-additional

The scholarship section in eAdmission invites applicants to document prizes, competition placements, leadership roles, arts and sports achievements, and community activities. Certificates and evidence attachments can be included where the portal allows.

This is not an essay — it is a documented achievement inventory. List everything with specific dates, organisations, and outcomes. 'School robotics club member' is weak; 'Regional finalist, FIRST Robotics Competition 2024, team of 6, responsible for drive system programming' is strong. Multi-faceted excellence is the stated scholarship criterion — give the committee specific evidence to evaluate.

https://www.polyu.edu.hk/study/ug/fees-and-scholarships/scholarships

How to Write a Compelling PolyU Personal Statement

The most common mistake international applicants make in a PolyU personal statement is writing a generic document that could apply to any university. PolyU is a specifically applied-excellence university — its programmes are best known for connecting education to industry, and the faculty reads statements with that lens.

Your opening paragraph should immediately signal what you plan to do after the degree — not what inspired you as a child. A Hotel Management applicant who opens with a specific observation from time working in a restaurant kitchen signals professional seriousness. A Nursing applicant who describes a healthcare experience that shaped their understanding of patient care is more compelling than one who says 'I want to help people.' The middle of the statement should cover your academic preparation: which subjects you chose and why they relate to the programme, any extended research, competition, or projects. Close with a concrete description of your goals — specific enough to be credible, without over-promising. Mention PolyU specifically: the School of Hotel and Tourism Management's global rank, a faculty member's research area that aligns with yours, or PolyU's placement record in your target industry.

Word limit: check the eAdmission portal for your specific programme. If none is stated, target 500–700 words. Submit as a clearly formatted PDF with your name and programme at the top.

Portfolio, Recommendation Letters, and Additional Documents

School of Design programmes require a portfolio demonstrating visual thinking, creative range, and craft. Format guidelines are provided in the eAdmission portal. Include 10–20 pieces across different media where possible; curate for quality over quantity. Include a brief process note for 2–3 key pieces showing how you approached a creative problem — not just the finished result.

Programmes that request reference letters typically ask for one or two from subject teachers or a school counsellor. Choose referees who can speak to your academic performance in relevant subjects and your character as a student. Brief your referee on your specific programme and what you hope they will highlight — do not assume they know what PolyU is looking for.

The scholarship section invites you to list awards, prizes, leadership roles, and community activities. Attach certificates or evidence where available. This is the space where multi-faceted excellence is evaluated — take it as seriously as your academic record. A blank or minimal scholarship section is the most common missed opportunity in PolyU applications.

Upload your IELTS or TOEFL score report as part of the standard application. Ensure the certificate is valid — test dates are typically accepted within two years of your application date (verify with PolyU admissions). Submit the full score report PDF, not just the summary page.

What Makes a PolyU Personal Statement Work

Since PolyU is programme-specific and applied-focused, the most effective personal statements take a professional frame rather than a personal-journey frame. The goal is to convince the faculty that you understand the field, have taken concrete steps toward it, and have a realistic picture of what the programme will prepare you for.

Tie Every Experience Forward to the Programme

Every experience you mention should connect forward to the programme. A hotel internship isn't just a story — it's evidence you understand the industry and can thrive in it. A maths competition isn't just an achievement — it signals quantitative readiness for engineering. Make the connections explicit; do not leave the reader to infer them.

Show Hong Kong and Asia-Pacific Context Awareness

PolyU students operate in Hong Kong's unique international-Chinese business environment. Showing awareness of Hong Kong's role in the region — and how the degree positions you to contribute within it — demonstrates the kind of global-with-Asia perspective that resonates with PolyU's faculty.

Be Specific About PolyU — Not Generic About 'University'

Reference something genuinely specific to PolyU: the SHTM's #1 global ranking, a particular faculty research group, the credit transfer policy for strong IB students, the Greater Bay Area opportunity. Generic statements about 'prestigious universities' are transparent and unconvincing. PolyU admissions officers can tell the difference immediately.

Personal Statement and Application Mistakes to Avoid

Writing a US-style 'why I am special' narrative — PolyU wants professional readiness and programme-specific motivation, not self-discovery storytelling.

Not customising for the specific programme — a statement submitted to Hotel Management, Engineering, and Nursing without adaptation is immediately obvious and weakens all three applications.

Exceeding the word limit or submitting unformatted documents — clean, professional presentation reflects the same attention to detail the programme expects in professional work.

Omitting specific Hong Kong or Asia-Pacific context — showing you understand where you will be studying and what opportunities the location creates demonstrates genuine research and commitment.

Leaving the scholarship section in eAdmission incomplete — this section is your only formal channel for merit scholarship consideration; an empty section equals no consideration regardless of your achievements.

Applying in February when you need scholarship support — by the Main Round deadline, many merit awards are already committed to early-round applicants.

Submitting a personal statement without checking whether your programme requires one — check the eAdmission portal for your specific programme before writing anything.

Frequently Asked Questions — Application & Personal Statement

Does PolyU require a personal statement for all programmes?

No. A personal statement is only required for selected programmes — primarily in Design, Nursing, and some Health Sciences. When you select your programme in the eAdmission portal, the system lists any additional documents required. If a personal statement is not listed, you are not expected to submit one for the standard application.

Can I apply to more than one PolyU programme simultaneously?

Yes. The eAdmission system allows applicants to apply to multiple programmes within PolyU. You will need to tailor any personal statements to the specific programme if different programmes have different requirements. Do not submit the same personal statement to both Hotel Management and Engineering — the expectations are completely different.

Are interviews conducted in person or online for international students?

Interviews for international students are conducted online. If your application results in an interview invitation, PolyU will contact you with scheduling details. Prepare for a professional video call — dress appropriately, test your connection, and be ready to discuss your application and programme motivation in specific terms.

Is Cantonese required for the application or interview?

No. The application is in English, and interviews for English-medium programmes are conducted in English. Cantonese is not required. Some interviewers may be Cantonese-speaking and may offer to conduct the interview in Cantonese if you indicate fluency, but this is never expected or required.

What is the typical word count for the PolyU personal statement?

PolyU does not universally specify a word count. Check the eAdmission portal for your programme's guidance. In the absence of a stated limit, 500–700 words is a safe and appropriate target — enough to be substantive without padding.

Can I contact PolyU directly to ask if my application is competitive?

Yes. The Global Engagement Office at international.study@polyu.edu.hk or WhatsApp +852 5514 3680 handles enquiries from prospective international students. They can clarify programme-specific requirements and advise on whether your qualification meets general entry standards, though they will not pre-assess individual applications.

Does my personal statement need to mention Hong Kong specifically?

It does not need to — but the strongest applications do. Demonstrating awareness of Hong Kong's position as Asia's international financial centre and the Greater Bay Area opportunity shows that you have made a deliberate, informed choice to study at PolyU. This is far more compelling than a statement that could equally be sent to universities in Australia or the UK.

What happens to my application if I do not complete the scholarship section?

You are still considered for admission on academic merit. However, you receive no scholarship consideration. Given that merit scholarships can cover 50–100% of tuition, leaving the scholarship section blank is a significant financial cost for no benefit. Always complete it.
